Mid-term results of zone 0 thoracic endovascular aneurysm repair after ascending aorta wrapping and supra-aortic debranching in high-risk patients

2017

Objectives Surgical repair of aneurysmal disease involving the ascending aorta, aortic arch and eventually the descending aorta is generally associated with significant morbidity and mortality. A less invasive approach with the ascending wrapping technique (WT), supra-aortic vessel debranching (SADB) and thoracic endovascular aneurysm repair (TEVAR) in zone 0 was developed to reduce the associated risk in these patients. Methods During a 10-year period, consecutive patients treated by the ascending WT, SADB and TEVAR in zone 0 were included. All patients were considered at high risk for conventional surgery. Measured outcomes included perioperative deaths and morbidity, maximal aortic trans…

Balancing Passive and Active Targeting to Different Tumor Compartments Using Riboflavin-Functionalized Polymeric Nanocarriers

2017

Riboflavin transporters (RFTs) and the riboflavin carrier protein (RCP) are highly upregulated in many tumor cells, tumor stem cells, and tumor neovasculature, which makes them attractive targets for nanomedicines. Addressing cells in different tumor compartments requires drug carriers, which are not only able to accumulate via the EPR effect but also to extravasate, target specific cell populations, and get internalized by cells. Reasoning that antibodies are among the most efficient targeting systems developed by nature, we consider their size (-10-15 nm) to be ideal for balancing passive and active tumor targeting. Therefore, small, short-circulating (10 kDa, -7 nm, t1/2 - 1 h) and large…

Genes coding for intermediate filament proteins closely related to the hagfish "thread keratins (TK)" alpha and gamma also exist in lamprey, teleosts…

2005

The "thread keratins (TK)" alpha and gamma so far have been considered highly specialized intermediate filament (IF) proteins restricted to hagfish. From lamprey, we now have sequenced five novel IF proteins closely related to TKalpha and TKgamma, respectively. Moreover, we have detected corresponding sequences in EST and genomic databases of teleosts and amphibians. The structure of the TKalpha genes and the positions of their deduced amino acid sequences in a phylogenetic tree clearly support their classification as type II keratins. The genes encoding TKgamma show a structure typical for type III IF proteins, whereas their positions in phylogenetic trees favor a close relationship to the…

Diastolic left ventricular function in relation to circulating metabolic biomarkers in a population study

2019

AimsWe studied the association of circulating metabolic biomarkers with asymptomatic left ventricular diastolic dysfunction, a risk-carrying condition that affects 25% of the population. Methods and resultsIn 570 randomly recruited people, we assessed in 2005–2010 and in 2009–2013 the multivariable-adjusted correlations of e’ (early left ventricular relaxation) and E/e’ (left ventricular filling pressure) measured by Doppler echocardiography with 43 serum metabolites, quantified by magnetic resonance spectroscopy. In 2009–2013, e’ cross-sectionally increased (Bonferroni corrected p ≤ 0.016) with the branched-chain amino acid valine (per one standard deviation increment, +0.274 cm/s (95% conf…

Troponin I Assay for Identification of a Significant Coronary Stenosis in Patients with Suspected Acute Myocardial Infarction and Wide QRS Complex

2016

Background Common ECG criteria such as ST-segment changes are of limited value in patients with suspected acute myocardial infarction (AMI) and bundle branch block or wide QRS complex. A large proportion of these patients do not suffer from an AMI, whereas those with ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) equivalent AMI benefit from an aggressive treatment. Aim of the present study was to evaluate the diagnostic information of cardiac troponin I (cTnI) in hemodynamically stable patients with wide QRS complex and suspected AMI. Methods In 417 out of 1818 patients presenting consecutively between 01/2007 and 12/2008 in a prospective multicenter observational study with suspected AMI a pro…

Population structure and recruitment of the ectoparasite Argulus coregoni Thorell (Crustacea: Branchiura) on a fish farm

2003

The population structure and recruitment of Argulus coregoni was monitored at a Finnish fish farm during the open water periods of 1999 and 2001 by weekly sampling of attached argulids. In 2001 the numbers of rainbow trout examined increased in the autumn when the A. coregoni population was declining. When the water temperature exceeded 10 degrees C, at the end of May, A. coregoni egg hatching commenced. A mean number of 98 (S.D. +/- 5.4) juvenile A. coregoni was recorded on each fish, before the start of female egg laying in July 1999. The abundance of lice was lower in 2001. The main recruitment of A. coregoni juveniles occurred in early summer, but the hatching of eggs continued until Se…

Experimental evidence for a hierarchy of mate- and host-induced cues in a fish ectoparasite, Argulus coregoni (Crustacea: Branchiura)

2007

Argulus coregoni is an ectoparasite primarily infesting freshwater salmonids. Sexually reproducing parasites such as A. coregoni are confronted with a dilemma between finding a mate and the costs involved in doing so; if mating partners are unavailable on a host, by leaving to search for a mate on a new host, the parasite is exposed to risks such as predation and energy loss. The utilization of chemical cues could enhance the probability of finding a host and/or a suitable mating partner and thus decrease the level of costs associated with detachment from the host. In this study we constructed a Y-maze arena to determine if adult A. coregoni respond to mate- and host-related chemical cues. …

Branch Retinal Vein Occlusion Followed by Central Retinal Artery Occlusion in Churg-Strauss Syndrome: Unusual Ocular Manifestations in Allergic Granu…

2009

Purpose To describe a rare branch retinal vein occlusion (BRVO) followed by central retinal artery occlusion (CRAO) in a patient with Churg-Strauss syndrome (CSS). Methods A 55-year-old man with a not yet diagnosed CSS developed a BRVO in the left eye and 1 year later a CRAO with painless and acute vision loss in the same eye. Medical history included bronchial asthma, history of allergy, eosinophilic pneumonia, bilateral pleuric and pericardial effusion, hypereosinophilia, and purpuric vasculitis. Results CRAO in the left eye was diagnosed by retinal whitening and a cherry red spot with coexisting old BRVO evidenced by previous laser photocoagulation. Corticosteroids and cyclophosphamide t…

Troponin T — a reliable marker of perioperative myocardial infarction?

1993

Following cardiac surgery, electrocardiography and creatine kinase isoenzyme MB (CK-MB) activities are of limited value in diagnosing a non-transmural infarction. With the recent availability of an assay to detect serial levels of the specific cardiocyte contractile protein troponin T the possibility has been increased of closing a diagnostic gap among cardiosurgical patients. Ninety patients with severe diffuse three-vessel disease undergoing myocardial revascularization were grouped by their postoperative electrocardiographic (ECG) findings (group I--unchanged ECG; group II--new Q-waves representing perioperative myocardial infarction (PMI)). Serial levels of troponin T and the activity o…
