Digestive vacuole of Plasmodium falciparum released during erythrocyte rupture dually activates complement and coagulation.

Abstract Severe Plasmodium falciparum malaria evolves through the interplay among capillary sequestration of parasitized erythrocytes, deregulated inflammatory responses, and hemostasis dysfunction. After rupture, each parasitized erythrocyte releases not only infective merozoites, but also the digestive vacuole (DV), a membrane-bounded organelle containing the malaria pigment hemozoin. In the present study, we report that the intact organelle, but not isolated hemozoin, dually activates the alternative complement and the intrinsic clotting pathway. Novel transmembrane topology of the hepatitis B virus envelope proteins.

Abstract The small (S), middle (M) and large (L) envelope proteins of the hepatitis B virus (HBV) are initially synthesized as multispanning membrane proteins of the endoplasmic reticulum membrane. We now demonstrate that all envelope proteins synthesized in transfected cells or in a cell-free system adopt more than one transmembrane orientation. The L protein disposes its N-terminal preS domain both to the cytoplasmic and the luminal side of the membrane. This unusual topology does not depend on interaction with the viral nucleocapsid, but is preserved in secreted empty envelope particles. k-Leibniz algebras from lower order ones: from Lie triple to Lie l-ple systems

Two types of higher order Lie l-ple systems are introduced in this paper. They are defined by brackets with l > 3 arguments satisfying certain conditions, and generalize the well-known Lie triple systems. One of the generalizations uses a construction that allows us to associate a (2n - 3)-Leibniz algebra pound with a metric n-Leibniz algebra () pound over tilde by using a 2(n - 1)-linear Kasymov trace form for () pound over tilde. Some specific types of k-Leibniz algebras, relevant in the construction, are introduced as well. Both higher order Lie l-ple generalizations reduce to the standard Lie triple systems for l = 3.

Instability of black holes in massive gravity

We show that linear perturbations around the simplest black hole solution of massive bi-gravity theories, the bi-Schwarzschild solution, exhibit an unstable mode featuring the Gregory-Laflamme instability of higher dimensional black strings. The result is obtained for the massive gravity theory which is free from the Boulware-Deser ghost, as well as for its extension with two dynamical metrics. These results may indicate that static black holes in massive gravity do not exist. For the graviton mass of the order of the Hubble scale, however, the instability timescale is of order of the Hubble time.

Q7-branes and their coupling to IIB supergravity

We show how, by making use of a new basis of the IIB supergravity axion-dilaton coset, SL(2,R)/SO(2), 7-branes that belong to different conjugacy classes of the duality group SL(2,R) naturally couple to IIB supergravity with appropriate source terms characterized by an SL(2,R) charge matrix Q. The conjugacy classes are determined by the value of the determinant of Q. The (p,q) 7-branes are the branes in the conjugacy class detQ = 0. The 7-branes in the conjugacy class detQ > 0 are labelled by three numbers (p,q,r) which parameterize the matrix Q and will be called Q7-branes. Oh, wait, O8 de Sitter may be unstable!

We analyze the stability of four-dimensional de Sitter vacua constructed by compactifying massive Type IIA supergravity in the presence of two O8 sources [1]. When embedded in String Theory the first source has a clear interpretation as an O8$_-$ plane, but the second one could correspond to either an O8$_+$ plane or to an O8$_-$ plane with 16 D8-branes on top. We find that this latter solution has a tachyonic instability, corresponding to the D8-branes moving away from the O8$_-$ plane. We comment on the possible ways of distinguishing between these sources.

At reduced temperature, endocytic membrane traffic is blocked in multivesicular carrier endosomes in rat cardiac myocytes.

Temperatures around 20 degrees C are known to block degradation of endocytosed material by preventing its transport to lysosomes, accordingly reduced temperature has been widely used to define endosomes. Newer studies have revealed that the low temperature block is proximal to perinuclear late endosomes, but it is not clear whether the block is already in early endosomes, or whether the traffic proceeds to multivesicular carrier endosomes which mediate transport from early to late compartments. A submerged anaerobic MBR demonstration plant with two commercial hollow-fibre ultrafiltration systems (PURON®, Koch Membrane Systems, PUR-PSH31) was operated using municipal wastewater at high levels of mixed liquor total solids (MLTS) (above 22gL -1). A modified flux-step method was applied to assess the critical flux (J C) at different gas sparging intensities. The results showed a linear dependency between J C and the specific gas demand per unit of membrane area (SGD m). J C ranged from 12 to 19LMH at SGD m values of between 0.17 and 0.5Nm 3h -1m -2, which are quite low in comparison to aerobic MBR. Experimental study of the anaerobic urban wastewater treatment in a submerged hollow-fibre membrane bioreactor at pilot scale

The aim of this study was to assess the effect of several operational variables on both biological and separation process performance in a submerged anaerobic membrane bioreactor pilot plant that treats urban wastewater. The pilot plant is equipped with two industrial hollow-fibre ultrafiltration membrane modules (PURON¿ Koch Membrane Systems, 30m 2 of filtration surface each). It was operated under mesophilic conditions (at 33°C), 70days of SRT, and variable HRT ranging from 20 to 6h. Optimising an outdoor membrane photobioreactor for tertiary sewage treatment

[EN] The operation of an outdoor membrane photobioreactor plant which treated the effluent of an anaerobic membrane bioreactor was optimised. Biomass retention times of 4.5, 6, and 9 days were tested. At a biomass retention time of 4.5 days, maximum nitrogen recovery rate:light irradiance ratios, photosynthetic efficiencies and carbon biofixations of 51.7¿±¿14.3¿mg¿N·mol¿1, 4.4¿±¿1.6% and 0.50¿±¿0.05¿kg CO2·m3influent, respectively, were attained.
