A new Biscutella (Brassicaceae) species from the western Balearic Islands
1999
Abstract A new diploid species, Biscutella ebusitana is described from coastal cliffs of the western Balearic islands. It is related to B. sempervirens L. and B. montana Cav. from which it can be distinguished by a combination of vegetative (shape, size, petiole and hairs of leaves, petiolate leaves) and reproductive features (shape of inflorescence, calyx indument). Earlier Balearic records of B. frutescens Coss. should be referred to B. ebusitana .

A Study on the Correlations between Machining Parameters and Specimen Quality in WEDM
1999
Wire electrical discharge machining (WEDM) is widely used in manufacturing, medical, aircraft applications and, virtually, all areas of conductive material machining. The process involves a series of very complex electrical, thermodynamical and electromagnetical phenomena that are still partially unknown. Due to the large amount of parameters involved in the process, a suitable set-up of the variables aimed to obtain the best performance is often very difficult. In the paper the results of a wide experimental analysis are presented: the tests were carried out on high-speed steel and tempered steel specimens utilising brass wires. The influence of the most important process parameters on the…
Agronomic Evaluation of Ethiopian Mustard (brassica Carinata A. Braun) Germplasm and Physical-energy Characterization of Crop Residues in a Semi-arid…
2017
Brassica carinata A. Braun is one of the most interesting oilseed crops suited to arid and semi-arid areas for energy purposes. Several studies have highlighted the possibility of introducing this species into cropping systems, typical of Mediterranean region. The aims of this study were to evaluate the agronomic performance of Brassica carinata germplasm under Mediterranean climatic conditions and to assess the physical and energy characteristics of crop residues and pellets made from the residues. A total of 20 different accessions of Brassica carinata were compared in a semi-arid area of Sicily (Italy). In the two-year test period, the main morphological and yield parameters of the acces…
Characterization of Brassica fruticulosa seeds
2009
The structure and vitamin E (tocopherol and tocotrienol), fatty acid and phytosterol content and composition of seeds of Brassica fruticulosa Cyr. (Brassicaceae) were characterized. Seed size and elevated content of γ-tocotrienol, and γ- tocopherol and low of α- tocopherol can be useful for distinguishing seeds of B. fruticolosa from those of Sicilian Brassica sect. Brassica. The concentration of the tocotrienol is about one third of the vitamin E content. This profile makes this wild species worth to be recovered as food source and its germplasm preserved in a gene bank.

Diversity, relationships and conservation of Sicilian wild taxa of Brassica: an overview
2016
Although lots of studies have been carried out through various analytical approaches and at different taxonomic levels, this overview reveals that actually a comprehensive biosystematic survey on the Mediterranean wild populations of Brassica oleracea group is still lacking.
Typification of names inDrabasect.Aizopsis(Cruciferae, Arabideae) based on material from Italy
2013
Names of 20 presumed taxa in Draba sect. Aizopsis, all based on material from Italy, are considered. Full synonymies are provided, and types are designated (for 14 names) or indicated. Most of the taxa are currently considered unworthy of recognition, of which 16 belong to D. aspera sensu lato. However, the question of whether the Sicilian populations might be distinct from the peninsular populations is still unsettled.
Development and Characterization of Diamondback Moth Resistance to Transgenic Broccoli Expressing High Levels of Cry1C
2000
ABSTRACT A field-collected colony of the diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella , had 31-fold resistance to Cry1C protoxin of Bacillus thuringiensis . After 24 generations of selection with Cry1C protoxin and transgenic broccoli expressing a Cry1C protein, the resistance that developed was high enough that neonates of the resistant strain could complete their entire life cycle on transgenic broccoli expressing high levels of Cry1C. After 26 generations of selection, the resistance ratios of this strain to Cry1C protoxin were 12,400- and 63,100-fold, respectively, for the neonates and second instars by a leaf dip assay. The resistance remained stable until generation 38 (G38) under continuous…
Phenolic profiles of raw mono- and polyfloral honeys from Latvia
2021
Abstract The phenolic compound profiles of 393 raw mono- and polyfloral Latvian honey samples were investigated using a targeted ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-high resolution mass spectrometry (UHPLC-HRMS) method. This strategy allowed simultaneous determination of the content of 11 phenolic acids, 18 flavonoids, 2 plant hormones, and 3 water-soluble vitamins in honey samples of botanically diverse origin, including buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum), heather (Calluna vulgaris), linden (Tilia cordata), and rapeseed (Brassica napus). Honey samples were collected directly from the beekeepers and were analyzed in their natural, raw form. A selective high-throughput analysis was im…
