Age, Health Beliefs and Breast Cancer Screening Program Participation in Valencian Community, Spain
2004
BACKGROUND: Age has a significant bearing on health beliefs related to participating in breast cancer screening programs. This study is aimed at analyzing the breast cancer-related beliefs and attitudes influencing screening program participation among different age groups. METHODS: In a transversal study, a comparison is drawn between the health-related beliefs of a group of women participating in a screening program and a group of non-participating women, taking into account three age ranges (under age 50 (N = 279), 50-60 age range (N = 463), and over age 60 (N = 271). RESULTS: Some variables significantly differ between the participating and non-participating women solely in certain subg…
Effects of cadmium chloride on some mitochondria-related activity and gene expression of human MDA-MB231 breast tumor cells.
2007
It was reported that cadmium is able to exert a cytotoxic effect on tumor MDA-MB231 cells, which shows signs of "non-classical" apoptosis and is characterized by drastic changes in gene expression pattern. In this study, we have extended our knowledge of metal-breast cancer cell interactions by analyzing some mitochondria-related aspects of the stress response to CdCl(2) at either 5 or 50 microM 24- or 96-h exposure, by cytochemical, conventional PCR and Northern/Western blot techniques. We demonstrated that (i) no modification of the mitochondrial mass was detectable due to CdCl(2) exposure; (ii) the respiration activity appeared to be increased after 96-h exposures, while the production o…

3D DCE-MRI Radiomic Analysis for Malignant Lesion Prediction in Breast Cancer Patients
2022
Rationale and Objectives: To develop and validate a radiomic model, with radiomic features extracted from breast Dynamic Contrast-Enhanced Magnetic Resonance Imaging (DCE-MRI) from a 1.5T scanner, for predicting the malignancy of masses with enhancement. Images were acquired using an 8-channel breast coil in the axial plane. The rationale behind this study is to show the feasibility of a radio-mics-powered model that could be integrated into the clinical practice by exploiting only standard-of-care DCE-MRI with the goal of reducing the required image pre-processing (ie, normalization and quantitative imaging map generation).Materials and Methods: 107 radiomic features were extracted from a …

Genomic and Proteomic Integrated Approach to Study Breast Cancer: Differences in Patients negative and Positive to 18F-FDG PET Screening
2012
Breast cancer rather presents distinct subtypes associated with different clinical outcomes. Understanding this heterogeneity is a key factor for the development of targeted preventative and therapeutic interventions (Rakha et al 2008). 18Ffluoro- 2-deoxy-D-glucose Positron Emission Tomography (18F-FDG PET) has been evaluated in breast cancer to characterize primary tumors, lymph node staging and patients follow-up after surgery, chemotherapy and/or external radiotherapy (Lind et al 2004). PET is a molecular imaging technique sensitive to functional or metabolic changes in tissues. Since functional changes precede anatomical changes, FDG PET has the capability to detect viable tumor tissue …

Curcumin as a possible lead compound against hormone-independent, multidrug-resistant breast cancer
2009
We examine the possible evidence that the phytochemical curcumin may overcome resistance to hormonal and cytotoxic agents in breast cancer. We present our observations on MCF-7R, a multidrug-resistant (MDR) variant of the MCF-7 breast cancer cell line. In contrast to MCF-7, MCF-7R lacks aromatase and estrogen receptor alpha (ERalpha) and overexpresses the multidrug transporter ABCB1 and the products of different genes implicated in cell proliferation and survival, like c-IAP-1, NAIP, survivin, and COX-2. Nevertheless, in cytotoxicity and cell death induction assays, we found that the antitumor activity of curcumin is substantial both in MCF-7 and in MCF-7R. We elaborated the diketone system…
