Subharmonic and homoclinic bifurcations in the driven and damped sine-Gordon system

1999

Abstract Chaotic responses induced by an applied biharmonic driven signal on the sine-Gordon (sG) system influenced by a constant dc-driven and the damping fields are investigated using a collective coordinate approach for the motion of the breather in the system. For this biharmonic signal, one term has a large amplitude at low frequency. Thus, the classical Melnikov method does not apply to such a system; however, we use the modified version of the Melnikov method to homoclinic bifurcations of the perturbed sG system. Additionally resonant breathers are studied using the modified subharmonic Melnikov theory. This dynamic behavior is illustrated by some numerical computations.

Polydimethylsiloxane (silicone rubber) brooch as a personal passive air sampler for semi-volatile organic compounds

2018

Exposure assessments conducted using a personal sampler include the contribution of human activities to exposure that is neglected when using a stationary air sampler. This study evaluated the uptake characteristics and application of the polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS or silicone rubber) brooch as a personal passive air sampler (PPAS) for measuring concentrations of two groups of semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs), namely phthalates and organophosphate esters (OPEs), indoors in proximity to the breathing zone. Uptake rates of the PDMS brooch were calibrated against a personal low volume active air sampler (PLV-AAS) co-deployed on each of five study participants working in offices for 8 hs…

Two episodes of Taravana syndrome in a breath-hold diver with hyperhomocysteinemia

2018

Key Clinical Message Taravana syndrome is a rare dysbaric disease characterized by neurologic signs and symptoms. Differently from others decompression illness, it has unspecified pathophysiology and unclear predisposing factors. Our cases suggest that thrombophilic state due to hyperhomocysteinemia could increase the risk to develop Taravana syndrome.

SNPs and taxane toxicity in breast cancer patients

2014

Aim: In order to identify genetic variants associated with taxanes toxicity, a panel with 47 SNPs in 20 genes involved in taxane pathways was designed. Patients & methods: Genomic DNA of 113 breast cancer patients was analyzed (70 taking docetaxel, 43 taking paclitaxel). Results: Two SNPs associated with docetaxel toxicity were identified: CYP3A4*1B with infusion-related reactions; and ERCC1 Gln504Lys with mucositis (p ≤ 0.01). Regarding paclitaxel toxicity: CYP2C8 HapC and CYP2C8 rs1934951 were associated with anemia; and ERCC1 Gln504Lys with neuropathy (p ≤ 0.01). Conclusion: Genes involved in DNA repair mechanisms and reactive oxygen species levels influence taxane toxicity in cance…

Relationship Between Thymidylate Synthase and p53 and Response to FEC Versus Taxane Adjuvant Chemotherapy for Breast Carcinoma

2011

Many drugs can be used for adjuvant therapy of breast cancer, including anthracyclines, cyclophosphamide, 5-fluorouracil (5-fU) and, recently, taxanes (TXT) have shown promising results. 5-FU blocks thymidylate synthase (TS) which cross-links p53 mRNA, inhibiting its synthesis. TS overexpression is one of the main mechanisms involved in 5-FU drug resistance. Enough p53 mutations can confer resistance to chemotherapy using anthracyclines and 5-FU, while are associated with improved responses to TXT. The aim of this study was to examine the TS and p53 levels in tumor samples and to compare the efficacy of FEC (5-FU, epirubicin, cyclophosphamide) and TXT chemotherapy in a group of patients wit…

Evaluating equilibrium and non-equilibrium transport of bromide and isoproturon in disturbed and undisturbed soil columns.

2007

19 pages; International audience; In this study, displacement experiments of isoproturon were conducted in disturbed and undisturbed columns of a silty clay loam soil under similar rainfall intensities. Solute transport occurred under saturated conditions in the undisturbed soil and under unsaturated conditions in the sieved soil because of a greater bulk density of the compacted undisturbed soil compared to the sieved soil. The objective of this work was to determine transport characteristics of isoproturon relative to bromide tracer. Triplicate column experiments were performed with sieved (structure partially destroyed to simulate conventional tillage) and undisturbed (structure preserve…

Laser-induced plasma spectroscopy in near vacuum ultraviolet using ordinary spectrograph and ICCD

2002

An experimental setup to measure laser-induced plasma emission spectra with an ordinary Czerny-Turner spectrograph and intensified charge-coupled device in the near vacuum ultraviolet down to 130 nm is described. Spectra of bromine, chlorine and iodine were recorded to demonstrate the performance of the setup.

Cardiovascular, ventilatory and total activity responses of brown trout to handling stress

1994

Changes in total activity, heart and ventilation rates were observed in 2-year-old brown trout, following handling stress, using non-contact bioelectronic monitoring equipment. Experiments were carried out in laboratory conditions at water temperatures below 4° C, Transfer between tanks as well as 5 min restraint stress increased the total activity of fish for 24 to 48 h, after which it declined to near the pre-stress level. The transfer and struggle both elevated the heart rate for 3 to 4 days. Ventilation rate was elevated to a maximum of about 30% above the nominal level and recovered within 3 to 4 days. Both heart and ventilation rates were higher in feeding fish relative to fasting fis…

Tissue fluidification promotes a cGAS-STING cytosolic DNA response in invasive breast cancer.

2022

: The process in which locally confined epithelial malignancies progressively evolve into invasive cancers is often promoted by unjamming, a phase transition from a solid-like to a liquid-like state, which occurs in various tissues. Whether this tissue-level mechanical transition impacts phenotypes during carcinoma progression remains unclear. Here we report that the large fluctuations in cell density that accompany unjamming result in repeated mechanical deformations of cells and nuclei. This triggers a cellular mechano-protective mechanism involving an increase in nuclear size and rigidity, heterochromatin redistribution and remodelling of the perinuclear actin architecture into actin rin…

A Fuzzy Logic C-Means Clustering Algorithm to Enhance Microcalcifications Clusters in Digital Mammograms

2011

The detection of microcalcifications is a hard task, since they are quite small and often poorly contrasted against the background of images. The Computer Aided Detection (CAD) systems could be very useful for breast cancer control. In this paper, we report a method to enhance microcalcifications cluster in digital mammograms. A Fuzzy Logic clustering algorithm with a set of features is used for clustering microcalcifications. The method described was tested on simulated clusters of microcalcifications, so that the location of the cluster within the breast and the exact number of microcalcifications is known.
