Whole-body magnetic resonance imaging (WB-MRI) in oncology: an Italian survey.
2019
Purpose: To perform a survey among all members of the Italian Society of Medical and Interventional Radiology (SIRM) to assess how whole-body MRI (WB-MRI) is performed in oncologic patients in Italy. Methods: On March 2019, we administered an online poll to all SIRM members about their use of WB-MRI in 2018 asking 15 questions regarding oncologic indications, imaging protocol, use of contrast media, experience in WB-MRI, duration of scan time and reporting time. Results: Forty-eight members participated to the survey. WB-MRIs/total MRIs ratio was 1%. Lymphoma was the most common indication (17/48, 35%), followed by myeloma and prostate cancer, with these three tumors representing the most c…
Involvement of Different networks in mammary gland involution after the pregnancy/lactation cycle: Implications in breast cancer
2015
Early pregnancy is associated with a reduction in a woman's lifetime risk for breast cancer. However, different studies have demonstrated an increase in breast cancer risk in the years immediately following pregnancy. Early and long-term risk is even higher if the mother age is above 35 years at the time of first parity. The proinflammatory microenvironment within the mammary gland after pregnancy renders an "ideal niche" for oncogenic events. Signaling pathways involved in programmed cell death and tissue remodeling during involution are also activated in breast cancer. Herein, the major signaling pathways involved in mammary gland involution, signal transducer and activator of transcripti…
Prevalence of Cardiac Disease in Breast Cancer Patients at Time of Diagnosis Compared to the General Female Population in Germany.
2018
Background: Advances in oncological therapy have significantly improved breast cancer survival; therefore comorbid conditions are becoming more relevant. We investigated the prevalence of prior cardiovascular diseases and risk factors in patients with breast cancer compared to those in the general female population in Germany. Methods: The PASSOS heart study is a retrospective multicenter cohort study on cardiac late effects in breast cancer patients treated between 1998 and 2008. We analyzed the frequencies of cardiac diseases and cardiovascular risk factors in patients from this cohort as documented in anesthesia …
Evaluation of the Effectiveness of Breastfeeding as a Factor in the Prevention of Breast Cancer
2020
Background: As cancer is one of the main causes of fatal illnesses in the world, and breast cancer is responsible for an elevated number of deaths in women, it is important to implement measures to prevent this disease. Method: In order to assess the influence of breastfeeding in preventing breast cancer in women, forteen prospective cohort articles are included in this study, and their methodological quality has been assessed through the Newcastle Ottawa quality assessment scale cohort studies. After determining the risk of bias for each case study, those with fewer systematic errors and therefore greater validity, have been selected to demonstrate the relationship they propose exists bet…
Clinical research focused in European adult women with minority diseases: Do we try hard enough?
2021
We analyzed the European countries participation in clinical trials addressing to new drug development focused on rare diseases in women comparing to more prevalent diseases as breast cancer. Participation was not associated with type of healthcare system neither socio-economic features, but it was associated with population size. Protocol ratios focused on breast cancer vs. orphan drugs and rare diseases was 15:1 and 9:1, respectively, mainly focused on ovarian cancer. Protocol number was insufficient to evaluate the success of Regulation (EC) 141/2000, it is necessary to increase the scientific quality and the number of really new molecules.
Prise en charge des proliférations épithéliales du sein avec et sans atypies : hyperplasie canalaire atypique, métaplasie cylindrique avec atypie, né…

In the last few years, diagnostics of high-risk breast lesions (atypical ductal hyperplasia [ADH], flat epithelial atypia [FEA], lobular neoplasia: atypical lobular hyperplasia [ALH], lobular carcinoma in situ [LCIS], radial scar [RS], usual ductal hyperplasia [UDH], adenosis, sclerosing adenosis [SA], papillary breast lesions, mucocele-like lesion [MLL]) have increased with the growing number of breast percutaneous biopsies. The management of these lesions is highly conditioned by the enlarged risk of breast cancer combined with either an increased probability of finding cancer after surgery, either a possible malignant transformation (in situ or invasive cancer), or an increased probabili…
Inwazyjny rak piersi w ektopowej tkance gruczołowej zlokalizowanej w dole pachowym. Opis przypadku
2021
Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed malignancy in women in Poland. Rare, unusual forms of breast cancer remain a diagnostic problem. The incidence of ectopic breast glandular tissue in the general population varies between 0.4 and 6%. The same abnormalities and diseases as in the anatomical mammary gland may develop in this tissue. Breast cancer may develop as well. We present the case of a 36-year-old woman, who went to the doctor because of a nodule in the right armpit presented for 2 years. The patient was referred to a surgeon with suspicion of an epidermal cyst. The lesion was surgically removed and in the histopathological examination, the diagnose was: invasive breast cancer…
Skin-reducing Mastectomy with Primary Implant Reconstruction
2011
Background: We present a series of skin-sparing mastectomies (SSMs) with skin reduction and immediate breast reconstruction to treat large and ptotic breasts. The technique combines oncological mastectomy with immediate subpectoral implant placement as a single-step procedure. Methods: Data was collected from a prospective database from February 2009 to April 2011. A total of 24 patients with macromastia or pronounced ptosis fulfilled the criteria for skin-saving mastectomy. All operations were carried out as a single-step procedure with adaptation of the contralateral breast by reduction mastopexy. Results: A total of 27 SSMs were performed in 24 patients. The mean implant volume was 265 c…
Skin-nipple-sparing mastectomy: The first approach in primary myxoid chondrosarcoma of the breast
2017
Abstract The primary mammary chondrosarcoma corresponds to less than 0,5% of the mammary malignancies. For the period ranging from 1967 to 2014, only 18 cases were reported in the literature. A 41 year old woman found a hard nodule on her external right superior quadrant/axillary prolongation through breast self-examination. The vacuum-assisted core biopsy (VACB) revealed “high grade extra-skeletal myxoid chondrosarcoma”. A skin-nipple-sparing mastectomy with the insertion of a mammary expander was performed. A protocol of adjuvant radiotherapy was also indicated. Until 2013, the gold standard was the radical mastectomy. By 2014, there were two cases of conservative approach to quadrantecto…
