A study of breast cancer mortality and cancer morbidity has been carried out in Spain recently for the period 1977-1988, covering the population of the 17 Autonomous Communities and 50 provinces of the country. Data was obtained from INE, Instituto Nacional de Estadística (National Institute of Statistics), with age standardization using the indirect method. The different Autonomous Communities and provinces were compared in order to establish possible significant differences. The crude mean mortality rate was 21 cases per 100,000 inhabitants/year; Las Palmas, Gerona, Barcelona, the Balearic Islands, Navarra and Zaragoza have the highest mortality rates, with a proportional increment of 54%…

This study explores the relationship between adjustment to cancer and quality of life in a sample of 68 newly diagnosed non-metastatic breast cancer patients. Responses were assessed on three occasions following communication of the diagnosis and included the Mental Adjustment to Cancer (MAC) scale, a measure of denial and a Spanish quality of life questionnaire for breast cancer patients. The main goal of preoperative chemotherapy is to reduce the size of the tumor and allow conservative treatment. Neoadjuvant treatment can affect axillary status with a downstaging in one third of the cases. For these patients, the benefit of axillary node dissection is questioned and the sentinel node biopsy (SLNB) seems to be a relevant option. However, the timing of performing SLNB is still debated especially for clinical negative patients with negative axillary ultrasound before preoperative chemotherapy. For axillary positive nodes proved by biopsy/cytology before preoperative chemotherapy, SLNB can be an option if there is a good clinical and radiological response.

Close postoperative follow-up of patients with breast cancer permits the early detection of possible recurrence of disease. Such follow-up allows for the detection of a tumor mass, that is small enough to permit adequate treatment leading to an increased survival time and better quality of life. Thus we studied 85 patients treated by radical mastectomy in stages I, II, and III during the period from December 1977 to June 1982.
