INTRODUCTION: The authors present an algorithm of partial breast reconstruction following quadrantectomy that allows to restore the breast volume defect with the use of pedicled perforator flaps. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Between March 2009 and May 2010, at the Plastic and Reconstructive Institute of University of Palermo, pedicled perforator flaps were used to integrate volume and/or breast skin in 12 patients after benign and malignant breast tumors. Autologous breast reconstruction may contribute toward restoring body image and improving quality of life after mastectomy. This systematic literature review describes differences in the quality and type of studies investigating autologous breast reconstruction techniques over time. Methods MEDLINE was searched for articles related to the surgical techniques, namely, TRAM, LADO, DIEP, and SGAP/IGAP, for the periods 1970 to 2007 and 2008 to 2010. Male breast cancer: Reconstructive surgery

The conventional treatment for male breast cancer consists of modified radical mastectomy with axillary sentinel node biopsy and/or axillary lymph node dissection in case of lymph node-positive disease. However, breast-conserving surgery (BCS) is gaining popularity also among men. In both cases, surgery leaves an aesthetic disfigurement that impacts patient well-being and quality of life. Thus, even if male breast has a different social and emotional role than female’s one, male breast reconstruction deserves the same importance. The aim of this chapter is to give a comprehensive review on latest indications and strategies for the post-oncological reconstructive surgery of the male breast.
Skin-reducing Mastectomy with Primary Implant Reconstruction

Background: We present a series of skin-sparing mastectomies (SSMs) with skin reduction and immediate breast reconstruction to treat large and ptotic breasts. The technique combines oncological mastectomy with immediate subpectoral implant placement as a single-step procedure. Methods: Data was collected from a prospective database from February 2009 to April 2011. A total of 24 patients with macromastia or pronounced ptosis fulfilled the criteria for skin-saving mastectomy. Porcine Model for Gluteal Artery Perforator Flap: Anatomy and Technique

Although flap anatomy is well studied on cadavers and microsurgical techniques are well practiced on rats, still there are few training models for learning the techniques of perforator flap harvesting. The cadaver has no bloodstream, so accuracy of dissection cannot be evaluated and flap viability cannot be verified. Training on humans carries a high risk of flap damage. A living model for perforator flap harvest is needed to learn the technique before starting with its clinical application.

Introduction: The role of the immune system in wound healing is multifaceted and cell-to-cell interactions may affect healing in several ways, many of which are probably still unknown.
