Parametrical Optomechanical Oscillations in PhoXonic Whispering Gallery Mode Resonators

2019

AbstractWe report on the experimental and theoretical analysis of parametrical optomechanical oscillations in hollow spherical phoxonic whispering gallery mode resonators due to radiation pressure. The optically excited acoustic eigenmodes of the phoxonic cavity oscillate regeneratively leading to parametric oscillation instabilities.

Observation of elastic anisotropy in strained optical nanofibers using Brillouin spectroscopy

2019

Optical nanofibers (ONFs) are excellent nanophotonic platforms for many applications such as optical sensing, quantum photonics, and nonlinear optics, due to both tight optical confinement and their evanescent field. From an acoustic viewpoint, it has recently been reported the observation of a new class of Brillouin acoustic resonances in optical nanofibers, including hybrid shear/longitudinal acoustic waves (HAWs) and surface acoustic waves (SAWs) [1–2]. It has been later shown that, under axial tensile strain, the Brillouin frequency shifts (BFS) of these elastic resonances are fundamentally different from that of standard optical fibers [3]. This is principally due to the hybrid nature …

Exchange stiffness in the Co2FeSi Heusler compound

2009

Using Brillouin light scattering spectroscopy, we determine the spin-wave exchange stiffness D and the exchange constant A for thin films of the full Heusler compound Co2FeSi prepared by pulsed laser deposition. The thermal spin-wave spectra were measured in various magnetic fields, for different transferred spin-wave momenta, and for different film thicknesses. Fitting the observed spin-wave frequencies, we find an extraordinarily large value of

Emerging dynamics in surfactant-based liquid mixtures: octanoic acid/bis(2-ethylhexyl) amine systems.

2012

This work focuses on the dynamic phenomena emerging in self-assembled transient intermolecular networks formed when two different surfactants are mixed. In particular, the relaxation processes in liquid mixtures composed by bis(2-ethylhexyl)amine (BEEA) and octanoic acid (OA) in the whole composition range has been investigated by dielectric spectroscopy and Brillouin spectroscopy. A thorough analysis of all the experimental data consistently suggests that, mainly driven by acid-base interactions arising when the two surfactants are mixed, supra-molecular aggregates formation causes the slowing down of molecular dynamics. This, in turn, reflects to longer-range relaxations. These changes ha…

Nonlinear pressure dependence of the direct band gap in adamantine ordered-vacancy compounds

2010

A strong nonlinear pressure dependence of the optical absorption edge has been measured in defect chalcopyrites CdGa{sub 2}Se{sub 4} and HgGa{sub 2}Se{sub 4}. The behavior is due to the nonlinear pressure dependence of the direct band-gap energy in these compounds as confirmed by ab initio calculations. Our calculations for CdGa{sub 2}Se{sub 4}, HgGa{sub 2}Se{sub 4} and monoclinic {beta}-Ga{sub 2}Se{sub 3} provide evidence that the nonlinear pressure dependence of the direct band-gap energy is a general feature of adamantine ordered-vacancy compounds irrespective of their composition and crystalline structure. The nonlinear behavior is due to a conduction band anticrossing at the {Gamma} po…

Phoxonic Hybrid Superlattice

2015

We studied experimentally and theoretically the direction-dependent elastic and electromagnetic wave propagation in a supported film of hybrid PMMA (poly[methyl-methacrylate])-TiO2 superlattice (SL). In the direction normal to the layers, this one-dimensional periodic structure opens propagation band gaps for both hypersonic (GHz) phonons and near-UV photons. The high mismatch of elastic and optical impedance results in a large dual phoxonic band gap. The presence of defects inherent to the spin-coating fabrication technique is sensitively manifested in the band gap region. Utilizing Brillouin light scattering, phonon propagation along the layers was observed to be distinctly different from…

Phonon calculations in cubic and tetragonal phases of SrTiO3: A comparative LCAO and plane-wave study

2011

The atomic, electronic structure and phonon frequencies have been calculated in cubic and low-temperature tetragonal SrTiO${}_{3}$ phases at the ab initio level. We demonstrate that the use of the hybrid exchange-correlation PBE0 functional gives the best agreement with experimental data. The results for the standard generalized gradient approximation (PBE) and hybrid PBE0 functionals are compared for the two types of approaches: a linear combination of atomic orbitals (CRYSTAL09 computer code) and plane waves (VASP5.2 code). The relation between cubic and tetragonal phases and the relevant antiferrodistortive phase transition is discussed in terms of group theory and is illustrated with an…

Study of the Spin Wave Linewidth in a 1-D Easy-Plane Ferromagnet Using Neutron Polarization Analysis

1990

An anomalous wavevector dependence in the spin wave linewidth associated with fluctuations out of the easy plane is observed for the first time in the one-dimensional easy-plane ferromagnet CsNiF3 by means of inelastic polarized neutron scattering. The linewidths of the spin waves, one attributed to spin fluctuations out of the easy plane and another in the easy plane, are studied separately throughout the Brillouin zone. The zone boundary narrowing of the linewidth associated with the spin fluctuations in the easy plane is observed for the first time in agreement with the classical spin wave theory. The deviations from the classical result at large qc and high temperature are interpreted a…

Orientational glass behaviour of K Br0.96(CN)0.04

1981

Ultrasonic measurements on the mixed crystal K Br0.96(CN)0.04 show a minimum of most of the elastic constants at 16 K. In addition we determinedc11(T) at 10 MHz and at 50 MHz observing dispersion effects. These results and previous Brillouin and neutron scattering results of other authors on higher CN-concentrations are interpreted by an orientational glass behaviour. A semiquantitative description is given in terms of the mean random field approximation.
