Remote photoplethysmography for skin perfusion monitoring using narrowband illumination

2019

The purpose of this study was to determine potential of remote photoplethysmography for skin perfusion monitoring, using 540 nm narrowband and 530 nm broadband illuminations. The alterations of cutaneous circulation were produced by topical skin heating protocol. The setup comprises of 530 nm LED light source and two identical cameras operated simultaneously: one equipped with narrowband optical filter (CWL=540nm), and another without filter. Results demonstrate the typical heating test response curve- comprising first peak, nadir and plato phase, which were significantly different in narrowband and broadband illumination. It was concluded that selection of optimal light source parameters i…

Tunable all-optical negative multitap microwave filters based on uniform fiber Bragg gratings.

2003

We present a novel and simple technique for obtaining transversal filters with negative coefficients by using uniform fiber Bragg gratings. We demonstrate a wide tuning range, good performance, low cost, and easy implementation of multitap filters in an all-optical passive configuration in which negative taps are obtained by use of the transmission of a broadband source through uniform Bragg gratings.

White light sources filtered with fiber Bragg gratings for RF-photonics applications

2003

Abstract In this paper we demonstrate that broadband light emitters filtered with fiber Bragg gratings are a suitable light source for RF-photonics applications. A 0.075 nm bandwidth fiber grating illuminated by a light emitter of 40 nm bandwidth has been used as light source to feed a microwave phase shifter based on a chirped fiber Bragg grating. The device operates successfully in the tested frequency range (0.5–6) GHz and has been optically tuned in a range of 4 nm.

Real-time and low-cost sensing technique based on photonic bandgap structures

2011

[EN] A technique for the development of low-cost and high-sensitivity photonic biosensing devices is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. In this technique, a photonic bandgap structure is used as transducer, but its readout is performed by simply using a broadband source, an optical filter, and a power meter, without the need of obtaining the transmission spectrum of the structure; thus, a really low-cost system and real-time results are achieved. Experimental results show that it is possible to detect very low refractive index variations, achieving a detection limit below 2 x 10(-6) refractive index units using this low-cost measuring technique. An iterative method in a probabilistic approach to the spectral inverse problem - Differential emission measure from line spectra and broadband data

2010

Inverse problems are of great importance in astrophysics for deriving information about the physical characteristics of hot optically thin plasma sources from their EUV and X-ray spectra. We describe and test an iterative method developed within the framework of a probabilistic approach to the spectral inverse problem for determining the thermal structures of the emitting plasma. We also demonstrate applications of this method to both high resolution line spectra and broadband imaging data. Our so-called Bayesian iterative method (BIM) is an iterative procedure based on Bayes' theorem and is used to reconstruct differential emission measure (DEM) distributions. To demonstrate the abilities …

Infrared and broadband dielectric spectroscopy of PZN-PMN-PSN relaxor ferroelectrics: Origin of two-component relaxation

2006

Dielectric spectra of several solid solutions of $\mathrm{Pb}{\mathrm{Mg}}_{1∕3}{\mathrm{Nb}}_{2∕3}{\mathrm{O}}_{3}\text{\ensuremath{-}}\mathrm{Pb}{\mathrm{Sc}}_{1∕2}{\mathrm{Nb}}_{1∕2}{\mathrm{O}}_{3}\text{\ensuremath{-}}\mathrm{Pb}{\mathrm{Zn}}_{1∕3}{\mathrm{Nb}}_{2∕3}{\mathrm{O}}_{3}$ (PMN-PSN-PZN) relaxor ferroelectrics were investigated in a broad frequency range from $20\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\mathrm{Hz}$ up to $100\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\mathrm{THz}$ by a combination of dielectric spectroscopy $(20\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\mathrm{Hz}\char21{}53\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\mathrm{GHz})$, time-domain terahertz spectroscopy $(0.1\char21{}0.9\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\mathrm{TH…

Achromatic Fresnel diffraction patterns

1993

Abstract A novel method for obtaining a single, but arbitrary, achromatic Fresnel diffraction pattern of any pupil with broadband parallel illumination is presented. The optical device simply consists of an achromatic objective and an on-axis zone plate. A criterion for selecting the system parameters in order to minimize the residual chromatic aberrations is given. The recording of the selected diffraction field is obtained with low chromatic aberrations even for white-light illumination. An experimental verification is shown to illustrate this approach.

Hybrid (refractive-diffractive) Fourier processor: A novel optical architecture for achromatic processing with broadband point-source illumination

1998

We report on an achromatic Fourier processor constituted basically by a quasi-wavelength-independent imaging forming system whose first half performs an achromatic Fourier transform of the colour input. The novel optical architecture, only formed by a small number of diffractive and refractive lenses, works under white-light point-source illumination and provides an intermediate achromatic real Fraunhofer plane and a final colour image without chromatic distortion. In this way, our optical processor performs simultaneously, with a single filter, the same spatial filtering operation for all the spectral components of the broadband illumination. The practical capabilities of our proposal are …

Applications and Implications of Fractional Dynamics for Dielectric Relaxation

2012

This article summarizes briefly the presentation given by the author at the NATO Advanced Research Workshop on “Broadband Dielectric Spectroscopy and its Advanced Technological Applications”, held in Perpignan, France, in September 2011. The purpose of the invited presentation at the workshop was to review and summarize the basic theory of fractional dynamics (Hilfer, Phys Rev E 48:2466, 1993; Hilfer and Anton, Phys Rev E Rapid Commun 51:R848, 1995; Hilfer, Fractals 3(1):211, 1995; Hilfer, Chaos Solitons Fractals 5:1475, 1995; Hilfer, Fractals 3:549, 1995; Hilfer, Physica A 221:89, 1995; Hilfer, On fractional diffusion and its relation with continuous time random walks. Broadband spectral analysis of MXB 1659−298 in its soft and hard state

2018

The X-ray transient eclipsing source MXB 1659-298 went into outburst in 1999 and 2015. During these two outbursts the source was observed by XMM-Newton, nuSTAR, and Swift/XRT. Using these observations, we studied the broadband spectrum of the source to constrain the continuum components and to verify whether it had a reflection component, as is observed in other X-ray eclipsing transient sources. We combined the available spectra to study the soft and hard state of the source in the 0.45-55 keV energy range. We report a reflection component in the soft and hard state. The direct emission in the soft state can be modeled with a thermal component originating from the inner accretion disk plus…
