Supercontinuum spectral control
2009
Supercontinuum (SC) generation in photonic crystal fibers (PCFs) is a cutting-edge phenomenon extensively studied in recent years [1]. SC has found many scientific and technological applications. The control of the SC spectral characteristics is crucial in most of them. A pioneering attempt in this direction was reported in Ref. [2]. We point out that SC is typically generated by accessing the anomalous dispersion regime of the fiber, i.e., when the group velocity dispersion (GVD) coefficient is lower than zero, β 2 ≪0. The recent achievement of soft-glass PCFs, namely, PCFs made up of a transparent material that shows higher nonlinear response than the widely used fused silica, opens new p…
Electron–cyclotron–resonance plasma heating with broadband microwave radiation: Anomalous effects
2007
Abstract Affects of microwave bandwidth on the high-charge-states of ion beams extracted from a conventional minimum- B -geometry ECR ion source are first demonstrated. The high-charge-state intensities, produced with broadband microwave radiation are observed to be factors ⩾2 than those produced with narrow bandwidth microwave radiation at the same power level.
Application of the small-tip-angle approximation in the toggling frame for the design of analytic robust pulses in quantum control
2021
We apply the Small Tip-Angle Approximation in the Toggling Frame in order to analytically design robust pulses against resonance offsets for state to state transfer in two-level quantum systems. We show that a broadband or a local robustness up to an arbitrary order can be achieved. We provide different control parameterizations to satisfy experimental constraints and limitations on the amplitude or energy of the pulse. A comparison with numerical optimal solutions is made.
Broadband Second-Harmonic Generation via Random Quasi-Phase-Matching in PPLT

We demonstrated broadband second-harmonic generation via random Quasi-Phase-Matching in periodically poled Lithium Tantalate.
Photonically assisted RF generator with incoherent sources
2008
An RF waveform generator operating with incoherent broadband light is successfully implemented. Complex RF ~10 GHz bandwidth waveforms are generated by means of incoherent wavelength-to-time mapping. Our technique can be scaled to the mm-wave range.

Exploring Broadband GRB Behavior During gamma-ray Emission
2007
The robotic ROTSE-III telescope network detected prompt optical emission contemporaneous with the gamma-ray emission of Swift events GRB051109A and GRB051111. Both datasets have continuous coverage at high signal-to-noise levels from the prompt phase onwards, thus the early observations are readily compared to the Swift XRT and BAT high energy detections. In both cases, the optical afterglow is established, declining steadily during the prompt emission. For GRB051111, there is evidence of an excess optical component during the prompt emission. The component is consistent with the flux spectrally extrapolated from the gamma-rays, using the gamma-ray spectral index. A compilation of spectral …

Real-time optical spectrum analyzers operating with spectrally incoherent broadband continuous-wave light source
2007
On the framework of coherence theory we discuss the averaged temporal intensity output provided by real-time optical Fourier transformers when the spectral line shape of the stationary source is considered. Some numerical examples are given and the deviations from perfectly monochromatic sources are pointed out.
Broadband printed dipole with integrated via-hole balun for WiMAX applications
2010
A broadband balanced printed dipole antenna for WiMAX applications (2.5/3.6 GHz) is presented. An integrated via-hole balun is used to feed the antenna and a Yagi-like scheme is proposed to improve the gain. The design has been optimized by means of parametric FDTD simulations. The antenna was fabricated and measured, giving a bandwidth higher than 50% and a gain higher than 4 dBi. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
