Side-lobe suppression in electro-optic pulse generation
2007
A simple method is presented for rejecting undesirable tails and wings, around the main pulses of a periodic train, which is generated by electro-optical, sinusoidal phase modulation. It is shown that, by using a broadband optical carrier, the nonlinear chirp components generated by sinusoidal phase modulation can be filtered out. Thus, nearly apodised picosecond pulsation can be generated.
All-diffractive achromatic Fourier-transform setup
2009
An achromatic Fourier transformation under broadband converging spherical-wave illumination is optically achieved by use of only two on-axis blazed zone plates. The novel optical configuration provides the achromatic Fraunhofer diffraction pattern of an arbitrary input signal with adjustable magnification. Further analysis of the system permits us to obtain a simple analytical expression to evaluate both the longitudinal and the transversal residual chromatic aberration, resulting in a compact achromatic Fourier transformer with low chromatic errors, even for a wide spectral content of the point source.
Ultra-broadband terahertz time domain spectroscopy by Solid State Biased Coherent Detection
2017
The spectral fingerprint of ibuprofen within the THz frequency window has been retrieved through an ultra-broadband THz Time Domain Spectrometry set-up. The latter implements the Solid State Biased Coherent Detection scheme, based on a compact CMOS-compatible integrated device. Such a technique shows unprecedented advantages in term of bandwidth (greater than 10 THz) over other solid state methods like electro-optic sampling.
A broadband multifocal metalens in the terahertz frequency range
2016
Abstract Metasurfaces, the 2D form of metamaterials with their ability in phase, amplitude and polarization manipulation are widely used in designing optical devices. Efforts to find proper photonic components in the terahertz (THz) range of frequency lead us to adopt metasurfaces as their constituent elements. Here, we conceived a broadband THz lens with an adjustable number and arrangement of focal points. To have a full control over the lens functionality, we used a metasurface with the capability of simultaneously modulating the amplitude and phase of the incident wave. C-shaped ring resonators (CSRRs) with different geometry and orientation capable of simultaneously manipulating phase …
Tapered Two-Wire Waveguide for Time-Domain Integration of Broadband Terahertz Pulses
2021
We show the time-domain integration of terahertz pulses achieved in a sub-wavelength, tapered two-wire waveguide. Both simulation and experimental results prove the time integration functionality of this waveguide topology.

We demonstrate experimentally ghost optical coherence tomography using a broadband incoherent supercontinuum light source with shot-to-shot random spectral fluctuations. The technique is based on ghost imaging in the spectral domain where the object is the spectral interference pattern generated from an optical coherence tomography interferometer in which a physical sample is placed. The axial profile of the sample is obtained from the Fourier transform of the correlation between the spectrally resolved intensity fluctuations of the supercontinuum and the integrated signal measured at the output of the interferometer. The results are in excellent agreement with measurements obtained from a …
Acoustic dynamics of network-forming glasses at mesoscopic wavelengths
2013
The lack of long-range structural order in amorphous solids induces well known thermodynamic anomalies, which are the manifestation of distinct peculiarities in the vibrational spectrum. Although the impact of such anomalies vanishes in the long wavelength, elastic continuum limit, it dominates at length scales comparable to interatomic distances, implying an intermediate transition regime still poorly understood. Here we report a study of such mesoscopic domains by means of a broadband version of picosecond photo-acoustics, developed to coherently generate and detect hypersonic sound waves in the sub-THz region with unprecedented sampling efficiency. We identify a temperature-dependent fra…

In this article we explore the effects that new information and communication technologies (ICTs) have on family relations in Finland. The idea of ‘new connectivities’ works as a starting point for...
Optimal Design of an X-Band, Fully-Coaxial, Easily-Tunable Broadband Power Equalizer for a Microwave Power Module
2020
A microwave power module (MPM), which is a hybrid combination of a solid-state power amplifier (SSPA) as a driver and a traveling-wave tube amplifier (TWT) as the final high power stage, is a high-power device largely used for radar applications. A gain equalizer is often required to flatten the TWT output power gain owing to its big gain fluctuations over the operating frequency range. In this paper, the design of an X-band, fully-coaxial, easily-tunable broadband power equalizer for an MPM is presented. The structure is composed of a coaxial waveguide as the main transmission line and a coaxial cavity loaded with absorbing material as a resonant unit. Sensitivity analyses of the attenuati…
Research Direction for Developing an Infrastructure for Mobile & Wireless Systems: Consensus Report of the NSF Workshop Held on October 15, 2001 …
2002
The recent NSF Workshop on Infrastructure for Mobile and Wireless Systems, held on Oct. 15, 2001 in Phoenix had a goal of defining and establishing a common infrastructure for the discipline of mobile wireless networking. This consensus-based paper is the outcome of that workshop. The paper provides a foundation for implementation, standardization, and further research and discussion on the issues of what should constitute such an infrastructure. Workshop participants came from many different wireless communities, including those of communications, operating systems, core networking, mobility, databases, and middleware. The workshop presented various research directions in the field and inc…
