Studies on interactions between Orobanche species and their hosts are mainly focused on resistance, radical interactions, and haustorium development. The influence of the host plant on morphology of the parasite under environmental controlled conditions is not reported in the literature. The introduction of the cultivation of millets (Panicum miliaceum and Setaria italica) along Iberia’s Mediterranean zone appears to stem from different origins which themselves hinged on their own specific historical developments. The earliest traces in the northeast, presumably of trans-Pyrenean origin, were brought to light in Bronze Age contexts (13th century BC) in Western Catalonia, notably in the Cinca River Valley. The different species of millets from southern and eastern Iberia, by contrast, come from later 10th–8th century BC contexts under Phoenician influence. Scotch broom (Cytisus scoparius (L.) Link, Fabaceae), an evergreen shrub native to Europe, is cultivated as a garden plant. In 2003 and 2004, potted plants with symptoms of leaf chlorosis, defoliation, and eventual wilt and associated with root and collar rot were observed in ornamental nurseries in Sicily. As much as 10% of plants were affected in a single nursery. Two species of Phytophthora were consistently isolated alone or together from the same pot with the selective medium of Masago et al. (2). Orobanche daninii a new species belonging to Orobanche sect. Trionychon is described and illustrated from the inland near Paran, Israel. Its relationships with O. aegyptiaca, O. mutelii and O. schultzii are examined.

The taxa of Orobanche occurring in Sicily and on the surrounding islets have been surveyed in the field and in herbaria. In total, 23 species occur in the region. O. litorea is found to be distinct from O. minor and O. thapsoides from O. canescens. O. crenata and O. ramosa are serious pests that cause heavy losses to broad bean and tomato cultures, respectively.

Chilocoris capensis n. sp. collected from fallen ripe figs of broom cluster fig Ficus sur Forsskal, 1775, the first burrower bug species of the genus Chilocoris Mayr, 1865 recorded in the Republic of South Africa, is described and compared with Chilocoris laevicollis Horvath, 1919, the morphologically most closely allied Afrotropical species. Additionally, an annotated checklist of burrower bug species recorded in the Republic of South Africa is provided. The known biology of Afrotropical Chilocoris species is briefly summarized.
