Intercohort competition causes spatial segregation in brown trout in artificial streams
1999
When together in a flume, 13-cm LS (age-1) trout appeared to increase their activity and behaved more aggressively, whereas 10-cm LS (age-0) trout tended to move less and were rarely aggressive in the presence of the larger size class. Both size classes were less mobile and preferred lower water velocities in winter than in summer, and increased their use of instream cover in winter. When both size classes were present, only small trout decreased their use of low water velocities and cover. The results indicate that intercohort competition may cause spatial segregation among size groups of brown trout, especially in winter when trout attempt to minimize their maintenance costs.
Characterization of Alternaria alternata Isolates from Tangerine Hybrids Affected by Brown Spot in Italy
2011
Alternaria brown spot, caused by Alternaria alternata, is the most important disease of tangerines and their hybrids worldwide, including Italy. The disease represents, for some susceptible citrus cultivar, a limiting factor in profitable cultivation. The results of the characterization of A. alternata isolates obtained from lesions on leaves and fruits of Fortune, Nova and Winola hybrids and Valencia sweet orange, collected in two groves located in Calabria and Sicily, is reported. An endopolygalacturonase gene (endoPG) was sequenced from five representative strains and a phylogenetic tree based on endoPG sequence data of Italian isolates and those of citrus associated Alternaria species d…
Effect of grafting on yield and quality of eggplant (Solanum melongena L.)
2013
Eggplants have fruits with different sizes, shapes and colours, according to the cultivar. Skin colour is due to anthocyanins, pigments located in the cell vacuole of fruit skin that belong to phenolic flavonoids, a powerful antioxidants group. Environmental conditions and growing techniques may influence fruits characteristics and their content of phenolic compounds. Grafting is a non chemical alternative for overcoming the effects of intensive and continuous cropping. The rootstocks preferred for eggplant are hybrids of tomato or tomato KVFN. Also species taxonomically close, as Solanum torvum, have been used and showed good vigour, compatibility and resistance to wilt disease. Informatio…

Cowbird versus cuckoo hosts: a comparative study of learned nest defense
2005
One of the best example of coevolutionaru adaptations is that of the interactions between avian brood parasites and their hosts. Brood parasites lay their eggs in nests of other specieis and leave the job of caring for their young with the hosts. Hosts of brood parasites tend to suffer high reproductive costs as often they raise few of no young of their own, an effect of being parasitizes. For this reason, many hosts have evolved strategies that reduces the cost of parasitism.
Taimenen mädin säilyvyys ja alkioiden kasvu Savijoen kipsinlevitysalueella
2019
Pelloille tehtävän kipsinlevityksen vesistövaikutuksia tutkittiin Helsingin yliopiston ja Suomen ympäristökeskuksen yhteishankkeessa ”SAVE - Saaristomeren vedenlaadun parantaminen peltojen kipsikäsittelyllä”. Hanke oli ympäristöministeriön rahoittama hallituksen kärkihanke. Siinä missä kipsin, eli kalsiumsulfaatin, levitys on vähentänyt pelloilta tulevaa fosforikuormitusta, se on toisaalta nostanut pilottialuetta halkovan Savijoen sulfaattipitoisuuden kolminkertaiseksi. Suuren sulfaattipitoisuuden tiedetään olevan haitallista vesieliöille, kuten kaloille. Näin ollen Jyväskylän yliopisto selvitti kipsinlevityksen vaikutuksia taimenen (Salmo trutta) varhaisten elinvaiheiden säilyvyyteen ja ka…
Redd Counting for Monitoring Salmonids in Finnish Inland Waters
2014
During recent years, systematic redd counting has been used as a monitoring method of wild Brown Trout Salmo trutta spawning stocks, both resident and lake-migrating, in the Lake District in Southern Finland. Counting is done by wading and viewing with an aqua-scope, and is related to channel microhabitat measurements, to estimation of gravel origin, to regression between redd length and female length, to regression between female length and egg number in redd, and to parr density. This produces valuable information about spawning environment, spawning stocks, and stock-recruitment ratio for management of stream-spawning fishes and river channels. Number of trout redds and of female spawner…
Aree industriali dismesse come risorse culturali. Il caso Porto Empedocle. Abandoned industrial areas or cultural resources. The case of Porto Empedo…
2011
The issue of brownfields involves environmental and landscape considerations. When, as in this case, the area - Porto Empedocle - is located along the sea, along the African coast of the Sicily and a few meters from the temples Valley, everything becomes more interesting for the cultural consequences.
Empagliflozin Induces White Adipocyte Browning and Modulates Mitochondrial Dynamics in KK Cg-Ay/J Mice and Mouse Adipocytes
2021
Background: White adipose tissue (WAT) browning is a promising target for obesity prevention and treatment. Empagliflozin has emerged as an agent with weight-loss potential in clinical and in vivo studies, but the mechanisms underlying its effect are not fully understood. Here, we investigated whether empagliflozin could induce WAT browning and mitochondrial alterations in KK Cg-Ay/J (KKAy) mice, and explored the mechanisms of its effects. Methods: Eight-week-old male KKAy mice were administered empagliflozin or saline for 8 weeks and compared with control C57BL/6J mice. Mature 3T3-L1 adipocytes were treated in the presence or absence of empagliflozin. Mitochondrial biosynthesis, dynamics, a…
A measurement-based trajectory model for drifted motions towards a target zone
2016
Trajectory models have numerous applications in the area of wiewlwss communications. The aim of this paper is to develop an empirical trajectory model for drifted motions. Recently, a highly flexible trajectory model based on the primitives of Brownian fields (TramBrown) was proposed by A. Borhani and M. Patzold. This paper provides an empirical proof for TramBrown using global positioning system (GPS) data collected from real life user traces drifting to a particular target point or a zone. The recorded location coordinates of the mobile user are processed to compute the total travelling length and the angle-of-motion (AOM) along the drifted trajectory. It is shown that the probability den…
