In Brussels in 1549 Charles V commissioned four bronze and four marble sculptures from Leone Leoni, to which were added new orders. The sculptor worked on them, especially the bronzes, in Milan, and they were shipped to Spain along with other works at the time of the arrival of the Emperor and the Court. This article discusses the history and evolution of the marbles and a bust (Prado Museum: E-260, E-262, E-267, E-269, E-291), which were sent from Genoa to Cartagena, where they remained until 1568. The European Union (EU) has been criticised for a lack of imageries and sites of memory that nation-states have traditionally utilised in their identity-building. The EU, along with other actors, has responded to this iconographic deficit with memory and heritage initiatives and branding campaigns. This article explores how this deficit is dealt with in the European Quarter in Brussels by enlivening it through cultural regeneration and creating narratives that link Europe’s and the EU’s past with the present. Fractal dimension versus density of built-up surfaces in the periphery of Brussels

International audience; This paper aims at showing the usefulness of the fractal dimension for characterizing the spatial structure of the built-up surfaces within the periurban fringe. We first discuss our methodology and expectations in terms of operationality of the fractal dimension theoretically and geometrically. An empirical analysis is then performed on the southern periphery of Brussels (Brabant Wallon).
