A Photographic study of subcooled flow boiling burnout at high heat flux and velocity

2007

Abstract The present paper reports the results of a visualization study of the burnout in subcooled flow boiling of water, with square cross section annular geometry (formed by a central heater rod contained in a duct characterized by a square cross section). The coolant velocity is in the range 3–10 m/s. High speed movies of flow pattern in subcooled flow boiling of water from the onset of nucleate boiling up to physical burnout of the heater are recorded. From video images (single frames taken with a stroboscope light and an exposure time of 1 μs), the following general behaviour of vapour bubbles was observed: when the rate of bubble generation is increasing, with bubbles growing in the …

Dynamic mode decomposition of magnetohydrodynamic bubble chain flow in a rectangular vessel

2021

We demonstrate the first application of dynamic mode decomposition (DMD) to bubble flow with resolved dynamic liquid/gas boundaries. Specifically, we have applied DMD to the output of numerical simulations for a system where chains of bubbles ascend through a rectangular liquid metal vessel. Flow patterns have been investigated in the vessel and bubble reference frames. We show how gas flow rate and applied magnetic affect bubble wake flow and larger-scale flow structures within the liquid metal vessel by examining the velocity field mode statistics over trajectory time and total flow time as well as the computed mode velocity fields. The results of this proof-of-concept study indicate that…

The crowd against the few: Measuring the impact of expert recommendations

2020

Abstract A large amount of research on recommender systems has focused on improving the accuracy of suggestions in offline settings. However, this focus and the commonly used techniques can lead to a “filter bubble”, severely limiting the diversity of content discovered by users. Several offline studies show that this can be mitigated by using experts for recommendation. In contrast to standard recommender systems, experts are able to generate more diverse recommendations and increase the novelty of given suggestions. They can be used in missing-data or cold-start scenarios and reduce noise in the users' ratings. This paper examines the impact of employed experts' recommendations on user be…

Myocardial contrast echocardiography in biopsy-proven primary cardiac amyloidosis.

2008

Abstract Cardiac vasculature is affected in 88-90% of patients with primary cardiac amyloidosis (CA). Myocardial contrast echocardiography (MCE) relies on the ultrasound detection of microbubble contrast agents that are solely confined to the intravascular space, and are therefore useful in the evaluation of flow in the microvasculature. This is the first case report describing the use of MCE during vasodilator stress to evaluate coronary flow reserve in a patient with biopsy-proven primary CA and angiographically normal coronaries. Qualitative MCE demonstrated delayed replenishment of microbubbles during peak stress; quantitative analysis was consistent with a reduction in total myocardial…

Periodic volcanic degassing behavior: The Mount Etna example

2013

[1] In contrast to the seismic and infrasonic energy released from quiescent and erupting volcanoes, which have long been known to manifest episodes of highly periodic behavior, the spectral properties of volcanic gas flux time series remain poorly constrained, due to a previous lack of hightemporal resolution gas-sensing techniques. Here we report on SO2 flux measurements, performed on Mount Etna with a novel UV imaging technique of unprecedented sampling frequency (0.5Hz), which reveal, for the first time, a rapid periodic structure in degassing from this target. These gas flux modulations have considerable temporal variability in their characteristics and involve two period bands: 40–250…

Oxidation of organics in water in microfluidic electrochemical reactors: Theoretical model and experiments

2011

The electrochemical oxidation of organics in water performed in micro reactors on boron doped diamond (BDD) anode was investigated both theoretically and experimentally in order to find the influence of various operative parameters on the conversion and the current efficiency CE of the process. The electrochemical oxidation of formic acid (FA) was selected as a model case. High conversions for a single passage of the electrolytic solution inside the cell were obtained by operating with proper residence times and low distances between cathode and anode. The effect of initial concentration, flow rate and current density was investigated in detail. Theoretical predictions were in very good agr…

Equilibrium and disequilibrium degassing of a phonolitic melt (Vesuvius AD 79 “white pumice”) simulated by decompression experiments

2007

Abstract Equilibrium and disequilibrium degassing of a volatile phase from a magma of K-phonolitic composition was investigated to assess its behavior upon ascent. Decompression experiments were conducted in Ar-pressurized externally heated pressure vessels at superliquidus temperature (1050 °C), in the pressure range 10–200 MPa using pure water as fluid phase. All experiments were equilibrated at 200 MPa and then decompressed to lower pressures with rates varying from 0.0028 to 4.8 MPa/s. Isobaric saturation experiments were performed at the same temperature and at 900–950 °C to determine the equilibrium water solubility in the pressure range 30–250 MPa. The glasses obtained from decompres…

The Spanish Case: The Housing Market Bubble and External Disequilibria

2013

The chapter recalls the major issues at stake in the Spanish economy since 1996, a time when financial markets started to discount the Spanish entry into the Eurozone. We start with a brief analysis of the most recent economic developments, and the current macroeconomic imbalances. As of 2007, the Spanish economy underwent its worst period in recent history, since the Stabilisation Plan was implemented in 1959. When 2008 came, however, what was most worrying was the sense of disarray that the Government projected: it simply took measures against the global financial crisis, as though this were the major, and indeed, the only crisis to cope with. Nevertheless, what affected the Spanish econo…
