Innovating European Long-Term Care Policies through the Socio-Economic Support of Families: A Lesson from Practices
2022
LTC and socio-economic deprivation of families are two relevant issues in international debate. The economic or time investment made by families in caregiving has an impact on the socio-economic status of family members in terms of economic means and social inclusion. This study analyzes the practices that are supported by home LTC, examining their characteristics, identifying their strengths, weaknesses, drivers, and barriers, as well as identifying social innovation aspects. The study provides a qualitative interpretative comparison of 22 practices from eight countries, representing the four LTC care models existing in Europe. Cross-studies aid in the development of sustainable policies. …
Validity of NMR pore-size analysis of cultutal heritage ancient building materials containing magnetic impurities
2007
NMR relaxation time distributions, obtained with laboratory and portable devices, are utilized to characterize the pore-size distributions of building materials coming from the Roman remains of the Greek-Roman Theatre of Taormina. To validate the interpretation of relaxation data in terms of pore-size distribution, comparison of results from standard and in situ NMR experiments with results of the mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP) has been made. Although the pore-size distributions can be obtained by NMR in terms of either longitudinal (T-1) or transverse (T-2) relaxation times distributions, the shorter duration of the T-2 measurement makes it, in principle, preferable, although the dete…
Quasi-brittle porous material: Simulated effect of stochastic air void structure on compressive strength
2021
Abstract The effect of porosity comprised of spherical air voids on the compressive strength of quasi-brittle material was studied via simulations. The simulated porous structures were based on pore size distributions of two mortar samples measured by X-ray microtomography. While the simulation method set practical limits on the size of sample, the base of the statistics was established by simulating 128 small structures generated by sampling from pore structures of two mortars. By studying the application of the classical strength-porosity formulas to the simulated data, a new simple model was formed. A linear relationship was achieved between the cubic root of air void fraction (porosity)…
Towards the Environmental Sustainability of the Construction Sector: Life Cycle Environmental Impacts of Buildings Retrofit
2022
In the context of the need for carbon emissions reduction, the buildingsector, as one of the most energy intensive one, needs tools and approaches towards carbon neutrality and the increase of the buildings overall energy performances. The paper proposes an integrated approach towards the environmental performances analysis of a small neighborhood having as goal the achievement of the Positive Energy District target and the assessment of its environmental impacts. The methodology proposed includes building modeling and dynamic energy simulation using the Energy Plus engine and a simplified Life Cycle Assessment approach. Two scenarios are investigated: i) the existing neighborhood, ii) the …
The Development of Roles in Kosovo: From Fixers to Journalists
2019
Fixers and the journalistic labour they provide have been examined by many researchers. This research sheds new light into the practices of fixers during and after the conflict in Kosovo to show ho...
Demographic determinants of the power of the state
2019
DEMOGRAPHIC DETERMINANTS OF THE POWER OF THE STATEConnections between demographic conditions of the state and its power have become a reason for the author’s attempt to identify key power-building factors featuring demographic nature. For this purpose, a statistical analysis based on data from selected European countries such as Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Germany and Romania was carried out. The outcome of the research allowed the author to obtain six groups of explanatory variables for the model of assessing the power of the state in the demographic area.
Outdoor performance of north-facing multicrystalline modules in Southern Norway
2012
The present paper deals with reports on an outdoor performance evaluation of multicrystalline modules facing north in Southern Norway. The relevance of this study is mainly for building integrated systems where some of the facades are in a far from optimum position. The impact of shading on the photovoltaic modules' performance is also evaluated. A dedicated experimental set up has been created to study the PV modules performance under the above mentioned conditions. The results indicate significant power extraction from the PV modules even in the north facing direction. Effects of shadowing are also considered.
Power of the state key principles
2018
Many years of research on the essence of the power of the state as one of the main determinants for shaping international relations allowed to formulate various concepts of modelling this phenomenon. The following article presents methodology of building the model of the power of the state. Existing and known from the literature models for determining power of the state have been discussed. Their advantages and disadvantages have been pointed out. Existing research, especially in the field of modelling the power of the state, indicates the popularity of developing models that are a conglomerate of various sectors of the state's functioning. On the other hand, there is a definite lack of pow…

Performance of a historical cantilever reinforced concrete bridge with half-joint degradation
2022
The lack of maintenance of roadway concrete bridges built from the Second World War until the 70 s of the 20th century has led in recent years to an ever-increasing request for safety assessments. When bridge performance in terms of Serviceability Limit State (SLS) and Ultimate Limit State (ULS) has to be evaluated, in-situ visual inspections and load tests for safety and maintenance assessment have to be coupled with structural analysis. In order to identify a sound bridge structural model and to assess the actual conservation state, more refined models than those usually considered for section and reinforcement design should be used to reproduce the results of load tests and perform globa…
