Wooden churches in Lithuania : analysis of failures and degradations, guidelines for restoration
2016
MASS-PRODUCED ELEMENT IN STRUCTURAL GLASS: “ARTIFICIAL VINEYARD”
2014
The aim is to design an architectural element flexible and easily adaptable to different urban situations using a material such as glass that, for the last years, is being employed as a structural element. The mass-production is rarely applied to glass construction systems that instead are usually designed case by case. The paper reports the results of a research carried out by the Dipartmento di Architettura and Dipartimento DICAM (Dipartimento di Ingegneria Civile, Ambientale, Aerospaziale, dei Materiali), of the University of Palermo, within the project "VESTRA" (POFESR 2007/2013 - Action Line 4.1.1.1), that aims to the experimentation of mass-produced elements in structural glass. The p…
Filigree constructions vs solid constructions. The relationship between structure and architecture in the contemporary age
2010
Historically, building shape and structure have been designed, in solid construction, at the same moment. Their relationship is evident in the organization of the building inner space. On the contrary, in filigree construction, the interior space isn't often directly defined by the structure and the separation between building's interior and exterior is much more clear especially if we consider contemporary architectures where filigree structures are frequently used. The paper points out the role of structure in relation to the building shape in the contemporary age. Different architectures have been analysed (such as high-rise and free-form buildings) in order to put in evidence the criter…
Integration of Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells with Glassblock
2012
The paper will show the first results of a research (included in a larger work about the Improvement of glassblocks performance in order to use them for the construction of sustainable translucent building envelops even in Mediterranean and Tropical Areas) aimed to the integration of glassblock with the DSC technology. Glassblock is a high-performance type of glass in the field of sustainable architectural claddings: the process of deposition of the cells on the single glassblock, their best position and the performance of this new kind of glassblock, DSC integrated, will be discussed in the paper in terms of transmittance, light transmission and aesthetical effects, together with the probl…
G. Vio…
Energy savings in building restoration - an applicative case
2012
Italy has a historical and architectural heritage which consists mainly of buildings built in different historical period. These buildings are today characterized by some aspects of functional distribution and comfort, which need rehabilitation. This is related to the change thinking on a more comfortable distribution of spaces, and improving the sustainability of buildings. These issues have spurred the study of methods to improve the distribution of spaces, the performance of indoor comfort and the energy efficiency in the full respect of materiality and aesthetics of the building. Therefore, the aim of this rehabilitation is improving the indoor comfort, the energy efficiency and the env…
TRANSIZIONE AMBIENTALE E SVILUPPO SOSTENIBILE
2021
This paper explores the issues related to the principles of eco-sustainability by proposing a case study of sustainable regeneration in Sicily, whose intervention choices were made with respect for the environment and local traditions. General guidelines: reduction of energy consumption; use of recycled and recyclable materials; improvement of thermo-hygrometric conditions. Programming is based not only on performance control, but on an idea of global sustainability based on the use of urban greening systems.
“TECHNOLOGICAL PROJECT” AND HERITAGE ENHANCEMENT (in CICOP)
2010
Recovering our building heritage has a fundamental role regarding renewal process, since it constitutes one of the strategies for urban and territorial balance. Building recovery, in the broadest sense of the word, means the renewal of precious constructions which have decayed or outdated but could be renewed and/or requalified. In other words, recovery is a subject which solves the probable damages of a building, trying to bring it back to its original living conditions; otherwise referring to the intervention which confronts the damages provoked by the weather and, more often than not, by the absence of maintenance. In any case, technological innovation can intervene systematically basing…
INTRODUZIONE
2021
This volume is an anthology of scientific papers and essays from different national academic institutions on the regeneration of degraded environments and the tools of participation aimed at building a sustainable project. Papers were presented in September 2020 in a cycle of study seminars entitled 'Transformation, Regeneration and Participation' organised by the University of Palermo, in the International Conference 'Scenarios of Abusive Housing' and in the Round Table 'Designing Participation', in International seminary ‘ATS Architectural Technology and Sustainability. What regeneration?’ in November 2007, October 2008 and July 2011 respectively, in Agrigento, Palermo and Kos (Greece). A…
