Design as adaptive and provisonal practice
2013
The chapter is about the experience of design and building of Eco-Week in Rome, in the suburb of Valle Aurelia
Moving towards a new life cycle analysis approach by implementing low cost structural 3d monitoring of historic building safety by means of image bas…
2016
Abstract A building’s structural safety is often remit to human life fatalities and the measures of social protection and security often used following the collapse of a portion of the building. It is quite clear that, if it were possible to monitor the increase of static deterioration, it would be easier to prevent the collapse. There are two fundamental aspects closely linked to the building’s collapse: the first concerns the security of lives and the second concerns the well-being and quality of life when it is considered in relation to Cultural Heritage survival. Unfortunately, the high cost of a 3D survey does not usually permit a constant monitoring of the visible instability. The pap…
New digital instruments for the community building in housing cooperatives
2019
The research starts from a study carried out for Confcooperative Habitat, which focused on the systematic analysis of the materials produced for the launch of a new season of the cooperative movement. The goal is to improve the active action on communities for a tangible social impact able to propose a model that knows how to enhance the common urban spaces within the interventions. Finding the new needs and the new processes that characterize living, outlined also in their condominium and urban dimension of ‘common good’, therefore of ‘common housing’. The procedural model proposed and modulated in an evolved platform, seeks to multiply the common practices of living in the city and live i…
The energy crisis of the contemporary city: intelligence, creativity and resilience.
2012
To address the energy crisis afflicting the contemporary city, recovery plans and retraining must mobilize new forms of inte…
Appraising building area’s index numbers using repeat values model. A case study in Paternò (CT)
2013
The knowledge of real estate prices trend over time is requisite to understand and expect dynamics of real estate market, and is useful to construct index numbers of real estate prices, numerical indicators exploitable to understand real estate profitability and land phenomena in different market segments. This work aims at the construction of prices index numbers relevant to building area site in the town of Paternò, in Catania province, and at the corresponding hedonic prices index numbers linked to the main real estate characteristics in the space of a period that goes from 2004 to 2012. The proposed methodology allows to build the index numbers of the building area’s unit prices in the …
USER- AND CONTEXT-ORIENTED CRITERIA FOR ASSESMENT OF HIGH EFFICIENCY POLYGENERATION PLANTS FOR BUILDINGS APPLICATIONS
2013
The eligibility criteria adopted to assess polygeneration plants as “highly efficient” can play a determinant role in favouring or discouraging the market growth of polygeneration systems, especially for buildings applications where economic viability is often more difficult to achieve. Basing on the current European framework, in this paper the opportunity to adopt user- and context-oriented criteria is discussed. After having identified three buildings with different uses (a large hotel, a hospital and an office building), the optimal layout and operation strategy of a polygeneration plant serving each building is determined; then, ex-post processing of economic and energetic results is u…
Assessment of indoor illuminance and study on best photosensors' position for design and commissioning of Daylight Linked Control Systems. A new meth…
2018
Abstract Artificial lighting systems have to ensure appropriate illuminance with high energy efficiency according to best design practice and technical standards. These aims can be tackled, by incorporating a Daylight linked control system. However, the system behaviour is strongly influenced by several factors and, in particular, by the sensors' position. Indeed, very often the illuminance on work-plane is not fully correlated with illuminance measured by the photo-sensor used to control the luminaires. This fact leads to wrong information for the Daylight linked control systems affecting its efficacy. The artificial intelligence of Neural Networks can be exploited to provide a method for …
An Innovative Photovoltaic Luminescent Solar Concentrator Window: Energy and Environmental Aspects
2022
Over the years, different types of smart windows have been tested and developed. In this study, an innovative prototype of a photovoltaic smart window, that integrates luminescent solar concentrators, was analysed. The device independently regulates the movement of the shading system and allows energy surplus, through the electricity generated by modules. Considering the peculiar structure (characterized by the presence of a light shelf) and the thermal characteristics of the device, the analyses focused on optical, thermal, and electrical performances, comparing them with those of a traditional window. The analysis followed an experimental approach that involved lighting and electrical mon…
Ventilation rates and unsatisfied percentage from indoor CO2 concentration.
2011
This work reports the results of a survey carried out on a hall in a historic building in Palermo (Italy) with the aim of assessing the air quality by means of objective measurement of carbon dioxide (CO2) concentration and its subjective evaluation through a questionnaire. The measured values of CO2 concentration were compared with those evaluated using the Meckler equation under steady-state conditions, having verified necessary parameters such as the constancy of the indoor and outdoor CO2 levels and the uniformity of the CO2 generation rate for all the occupants. The positive correspondence between measured and calculated results allowed us to utilise, under differing circum- stances, t…
