Normal pressures and frictional tractions on shallow conical hopper walls after concentric filling: Predictions and experiments
2013
Author's version of an article in the journal: Chemical Engineering Science. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.ces.2012.11.028 A silo with a shallow hopper is designed to achieve the required silo capacity when the headroom available is limited, provided that the issue of segregation of stored particulate solids is not a problem. Several analytical models have been proposed to try to predict the design loads for such shallow silo hoppers to guarantee their structural integrity. In this study, a novel finite element analysis has been conducted to explore the development of pressures and tractions on the wall of a full scale shallow hopper when it is filled wit…
Toward the Development of Load Transfer Efficiency Evaluation of Rigid Pavements by a Rolling Wheel Deflectometer
2020
The jointed rigid pavement is currently evaluated by the Falling weight deflectometer which is rather slow for the testing of the jointed pavements. Continuous nondestructive evaluation of rigid pavements with a rolling wheel deflectometer can be used to measure the load transfer and is investigated. Load transfer is an important indicator of the rigid pavement&rsquo

Modeling the influence of potassium content and heating rate on biomass pyrolysis
2017
This study presents a combined kinetic and particle model that describes the effect of potassium and heating rate during the fast pyrolysis of woody and herbaceous biomass. The model calculates the mass loss rate, over a wide range of operating conditions relevant to suspension firing. The shrinking particle model considers internal and external heat transfer limitations and incorporates catalytic effects of potassium on the product yields. Modeling parameters were tuned with experimentally determined char yields at high heating rates (>200 K s−1) using a wire mesh reactor, a single particle burner, and a drop tube reactor. The experimental data demonstrated that heating rate and potassium …
Exploiting Data Analytics and Deep Learning Systems to Support Pavement Maintenance Decisions
2021
Road networks are critical infrastructures within any region and it is imperative to maintain their conditions for safe and effective movement of goods and services. Road Management, therefore, plays a key role to ensure consistent efficient operation. However, significant resources are required to perform necessary maintenance activities to achieve and maintain high levels of service. Pavement maintenance can typically be very expensive and decisions are needed concerning planning and prioritizing interventions. Data are key towards enabling adequate maintenance planning but in many instances, there is limited available information especially in small or under-resourced urban road authorit…
Progetto sostenibile di edilizia residenziale a Marsala: “Casa Salina”
2021
The present research work aims at the design of a sustainable building, a small holiday home single-family house in Villaggio San Teodoro, Marsala (TP). A territorial classification, the assessment of the climatic data and a study of the solar paths made possible the most passive strategies for the improvement of indoor and outdoor comfort. Interesting and reasoned was the study of the prevailing winds and the relative positioning and sizing of the openings, including on the roof, in order to favor natural ventilation inside the building. The effectiveness of these solutions have been proven by fluid dynamics analyzes with Ansys Fluent software, Revit and Daylight Visualizer in order to det…
Promoting the Flexibility of Thermal Prosumers Equipped with Heat Pumps to Support Power Grid Management
2023
The increasing share of renewable energy sources in energy systems will lead to unpredictable moments of surplus/deficit in energy production. To address this issue, users with heat pumps can provide support to power grid operators through flexible unit operation achieved via Demand Response programs. For buildings connected to low-temperature heating networks with ensured third-party access, further room for flexibility can be explored by investigating the production of surplus heat that can be sold to the network. A key aspect lies in the identification of the energy pricing options that could encourage such flexible operation of a heat pump by “thermal prosumers”. To this aim…
Whose voice? Understanding stakeholder involvement in law drafting affecting Sami reindeer herding
2019
A communication and a legal approach are combined to investigate stakehold-er involvement in law drafting affecting Sami reindeer herding. The thesis fo-cuses on Finland, participation in law drafting in the Act on Metsähallitus (For-est Management and Park Services) and consultation related to the adoption of the International Labour Organization (ILO) Convention No. 169 concerning Indigenous and Tribal Peoples in Independent Countries. The research aims at gaining a better understanding of communication preceding and during law drafting processes regarding indigenous land use. It clarifies the changing con-text of the law drafting in which the issue of land use is addressed. Study 1 provi…
Hybrid Propulsion Efficiency Increment through Exhaust Energy Recovery—Part 2: Numerical Simulation Results
2023
The efficiency of hybrid electric vehicles may be substantially increased if the energy of exhaust gases, which do not complete the expansion inside the cylinder of the internal combustion engine, is efficiently recovered using a properly designed turbo-generator and employed for vehicle propulsion. Previous studies, carried out by the same authors of this work, showed a potential hybrid vehicle fuel efficiency increment up to 15% employing a 20 kW turbine on a 100 HP-rated power thermal unit. The innovative thermal unit proposed here is composed of a supercharged engine endowed with a properly designed turbo-generator, which comprises two fundamental elements: an exhaust gas turbine expres…
