Comparison Between Conventional and Vegetated Roof by Means of a Dynamic Simulation

2015

In this paper, a dynamic simulation of a building located in the Campus University of Palermo, Italy, has been carried out. We considered two different scenarios; in the first one, the building as it is, with a conventional covering, while in the second one the roof was equipped with a green roof. The results of the two simulations have been compared, suggesting that such building component could contribute to the energy savings of the building. However, it has to be considered as part of other possible actions devoted to improve the energy efficiency of the whole building. (C) 2015 The Authors. Published by Elsevier Ltd. The Application of the Life-Cycle Assessment in the Building Sector: An Italian Case Study

2017

The building sector is one of the most relevant in terms of generation of wealth and occupation, but it is also responsible for significant consumption of natural resources and the generation of environmental impacts, mainly greenhouse gas emissions. In order to improve the eco profile of buildings during their life-cycle, the reduction of the use of resources and the minimization of environmental impacts have become, in the last years, some of the main objectives to achieve in the design of sustainable buildings. The application of the life-cycle thinking approach, looking at the whole life cycle of buildings, is of paramount importance for a real decarbonization and reduction of the envir…

Ventilative cooling application in Mediterranean buildings: impacts on grid interaction and load match

2016

The concept of load matching refers to the simultaneous occurrence of loads and generation in buildings: it can be increased and optimised with modifications on both the energy demand and generation, but its pre-requisite is to guarantee passive energy efficiency. In the Mediterranean areas, a major challenge in new buildings is the increasing overheating even during mildly hot seasons. Ventilative cooling can be a potential solution to such issues and have an impact on load match in buildings and their grid interaction. The study analyses the potential of ventilative cooling to improve the load match in three different case studies in Italy. Ventilative cooling proved viable in moderately …

Planning, implementation and evaluation of a team-building programme in a female youth football team : an action research case study

2015

Antunes, Nuno, 2015. Planning, Implementation and Evaluation of a Team-Building Programme in a Female Youth Football Team: an Action Research Case Study. Master's Thesis in Sport and Exercise Psychology. Department of Sport Sciences, University of Jyväskylä. 55 pp It is believed that teams who work well together perform better. Frequently this requires an outside influence, which has been called team-building (TB). TB is a multivariate process and, therefore, should be studied as a multivariate issue. The current study focuses on understanding and describing the use of TB methods rather than directly investigating the effectiveness of the programme. Thus, the purpose was to describe the pla…

Wooden, gypsum and cork floor in the Sicilian construction tradition

2014

This presentation deals with a part of a wider and more complex outline of the Sicilian construction tradition characterised by the presence of gypsum technologies. Gypsum is a very common material used in the island for the realisation of all building elements; its use is commonly spread throughout Sicily thanks to several and wide superficial out crops located in some parts of the island that make this material very easy to find. This presentation is particularly focused on wooden and gypsum floors found and analysed during searches and surveys in the regional area. Outline on criteria for some consistent and appropriate consolidation and restoration interventions are here proposed.

Can Dried Fruits Replace Unhealthy Snacking among Millennials? An Empirical Study on Dried Fruit Consumption in Italy

2023

The consumption of dried fruits in place of unhealthy snacks, which are rich in sugars, salt, and fats, could represent a valid option for reaching the daily intake recommended by the WHO for fruits and for encouraging the adoption of a sustainable diet. However, the consumption of dried fruits is lower than that of unhealthy snacks, especially among young people. Therefore, to foster young people’s intentions to consume dried fruits instead of unhealthy snacks, it is important to identify the factors underlying millennials’ consumption intentions. Using a convenience sample of 174 Italian millennials, this paper aimed to understand the factors influencing young people’s i…

IAQ monitoring in heritage buildings

2005

Heritage buildings often operate in free conditions, as they are not equipped with HVAC systems. This calls for the interventions of proper measurements with the aim of monitoring and controlling indoor physical parameters. As matter of fact, the control of indoor conditions in museums is of paramount importance for the proper preservation of artefacts. Moreover, in such buildings another requirement should be achieved, that is the maintenance of the comfort and safety conditions for visitors. In this work the results of a survey carried out on a hall of a historical palace to estimate the people occupancy by making use concentration of CO(2) are reported.

Categorization of the historic architecture in Palermo for the purpose of energy assessment

2015

The strategies to improve the energy performance of historic buildings can be compatible with their conservation if they are referred to material, construction, distribution features, strictly related to a local level. In the EU project EFFESUS, a method of categorization …

2017
