Municipalities ‘Like’ Facebook: The Use of Social Media in Local Municipalities

2013

The use of Facebook in local municipalities has grown dramatically over the last few years. Local municipalities enter social media to meet people where they already are, in order to inform, discuss and receive feedback. The use of such services is rarely an integrated part of the municipalities’ communication strategies, and more knowledge is needed to explore how local municipalities could use such services to their benefit. This chapter contributes to this area of research by, based on current literature, classifying municipalities’ use of social media into six thematic areas. The explanatory potential is illustrated by conducting a qualitative case study in which a local municipality’s …

Media use during adolescence: the recommendations of the Italian Pediatric Society

2019

Abstract Background The use of media device, such as smartphone and tablet, is currently increasing, especially among the youngest. Adolescents spend more and more time with their smartphones consulting social media, mainly Facebook, Instagram and Twitter because. Adolescents often feel the necessity to use a media device as a means to construct a social identity and express themselves. For some children, smartphone ownership starts even sooner as young as 7 yrs, according to internet safety experts. Material and methods We analyzed the evidence on media use and its consequences in adolescence. Results In literature, smartphones and tablets use may negatively influences the psychophysical d…

Cyberbullying, psychosocial adjustment and suicide ideation in adolescence

2019

Bullying, cyberbullying and mental health: the role of student connectedness as a school protective factor

2021

Traditional bullying and cyberbullying are linked to adverse mental health outcomes. Student connectedness has been recently identified as a potential protective factor in these relationships. Nonetheless, the multilevel nature of these interactions has been frequently overlooked. The present study pretends to fill this gap by exploring the associations between individual levels of bullying and cyberbullying and three adjustment outcomes (i.e., suicidal behavior, symptoms of depression, and self-esteem), as well as the moderating role of the school level of student connectedness on these relationships. The participants in this work were 1,774 students aged 14-18 years (M = 15.70, SD = 1.26)…

Propagation of spatiotemporal solitons in dissipative media

2010

This thesis presents a semi-analytical approach for the search of (3+1)D spatio-temporal soliton solutions of the complex cubic-quintic Ginzburg-Landau equation (GL3D).We use a semi-analytical method called collective coordinate approach, to obtain an approximate profile of the unknown pulse field. This ansatz function is chosen to be a function of a finite number of parameters describing the light pulse.By applying this collective corrdinate procedure to the GL3D equation, we obtain a system of variational equations which give the evolution of the light bullet parameters as a function of the propagation distance. We show that the collective coordinate approach is uncomparably faster than t…

Ultimate strain and deformability of elementary flax fibres

2011

Flax fibres possess high specific strength and stiffness, and thus are competitive in terms of mechanical properties with the traditional reinforcing fibres used in polymer-matrix composite materials. The mechanical properties of fibres have considerable variability that needs to be characterized and allowed for in the analysis of mechanical response of composites. In this study, the distribution of ultimate strain of elementary flax fibres and its dependence on gauge length is considered. The applicability of the modified Weibull distribution, used for fibre strength, to fibre ultimate strain is evaluated. A simplified relation of ultimate strain and fibre strength distributions is propos…

Booms, Busts and normal times in the housing market

2015

We assess the existence of duration dependence in the likelihood of an end in housing booms, busts, and normal times. Using data for 20 industrial countries and a continuous-time Weibull duration model, we find evidence of positive duration dependence suggesting that housing market cycles have become longer over the last decades. Then, we extend the baseline Weibull model and allow for the presence of a change-point in the duration dependence parameter. We show that positive duration dependence is present in booms and busts that last less than 26 quarters, but that does not seem to be the case for longer phases of the housing market cycle. For normal times, no evidence of change-points is fo…
