*-Representations of Partial *-Algebras

2002

This chapter is devoted to *-representations of partial *-algebras. We introduce in Section 7.1 the notions of closed, fully closed, self-adjoint and integrable *-representations. In Section 7.2, the intertwining spaces of two *-representations of a partial *-algebra are defined and investigated, and using them we define the induced extensions of a *-representation. Section 7.3 deals with vector representations for a *-representation of a partial *-algebra, which are the appropriate generalization to a *-representation of the notion of generalized vectors described in Chapter 5. Regular and singular vector representations are defined and characterized by the properties of the commutant, and…

Andreklassingers arbeid med problemløsningsoppgaver : Et semiotisk perspektiv

2019

Masteroppgave matematikkdidaktikk MA502 – Universitetet i Agder 2019 This master thesis presentsaqualitative case study whichexplore year 2 students work with problem solving tasks, in a semiotic perspective. In the study, three small groups were observed while working with problem solving tasks. The aim of the observations where to getaninsight into which semiotic resources the students used while working onthe problem solving tasks. Video recordings from the observations make up the empirical data material of this study. This study is placed in the socio-cultural learning perspective. The aim of this study is to explore which semiotic resources the students use while working onproblem sol…

The impact of service bundles on the mechanism through which functional value and price value affect WOM intent

2017

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to contribute toward the current limited understanding of service bundles by investigating how purchasers of combined product-service bundles (bundle customers) differ from those purchasing a product and associated service separately (non-bundle customers). Design/methodology/approach The hypothesized effects were tested on a representative sample of mobile phone subscribers in Finland, through a multi-group moderated analysis using variance-based structural equation modeling. Findings While functional value had a stronger effect on attitude for bundle customers, price value is a stronger determinant of attitude for non-bundle customers. There was no di…

Cortical Bundles in the Persistent, Photosynthetic Stems of Cacti

1992

We examined 62 species in 45 genera of the cactus subfamily Cactoideae; all had collateral cortical bundles that permeated the broad, water-storing inner cortex and extended to the base of the outer, photosynthetic palisade cortex. Mean distance between cortical bundles was 0.75 mm, similar to the mean spacing (0.74 mm) of veins in leaves of Pereskia, a genus of relict leaf-bearing cacti. In 16 species, both young and extremely old stem cortex was available for study: in all of these, older bundles had larger amounts of phloem than did younger bundles, indicating that phloem had been produced for many years. In ten species, older bundles also had more xylem than younger bundles. In two gene…

A method for quantifying atrial fibrillation organization based on wave-morphology similarity

2002

A new method for quantifying the organization of single bipolar electrograms recorded in the human atria during atrial fibrillation (AF) is presented. The algorithm relies on the comparison between pairs of local activation waves (LAWs) to estimate their morphological similarity, and returns a regularity index (/spl rho/) which measures the extent of repetitiveness over time of the detected activations. The database consisted of endocardial data from a multipolar basket catheter during AF and intraatrial recordings during atrial flutter. The index showed maximum regularity (/spl rho/=1) for all atrial flutter episodes and decreased significantly when increasing AF complexity as defined by W…

Some reflections on Fuzzy Set Theory as an Experimental Science

2014

The aim of this paper is to open a critical discussion on the claim, recently presented in the community and especially heralded by Enric Trillas, that fuzzy logic should be seen as an “experimental science”. The first interesting aspect of such remark is whether and in which way such position has consequences on the real development of the research, or if it is simply a (different) way of looking at the same phenomenon. As a consequence, we investigate the possible connection to Zadeh’s distiction between Fuzzy logic in a restricted sense and in a general sense. We shall argue that Trillas’s claim not only strongly supports the necessity for such a distinction, but provides a path of inves…

The Itô Integral

2014

The Ito integral allows us to integrate stochastic processes with respect to the increments of a Brownian motion or a somewhat more general stochastic process. We develop the Ito integral first for Brownian motion and then for generalized diffusion processes (so called Ito processes). In the third section, we derive the celebrated Ito formula. This is the chain rule for the Ito integral that enables us to do explicit calculations with the Ito integral. In the fourth section, we use the Ito formula to obtain a stochastic solution of the classical Dirichlet problem. This in turn is used in the fifth section in order to show that like symmetric simple random walk, Brownian motion is recurrent …

Seifert manifolds admitting partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms

2017

We characterize which 3-dimensional Seifert manifolds admit transitive partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms. In particular, a circle bundle over a higher-genus surface admits a transitive partially hyperbolic diffeomorphism if and only if it admits an Anosov flow.

Spacelike energy of timelike unit vector fields on a Lorentzian manifold

2004

On a Lorentzian manifold, we define a new functional on the space of unit timelike vector fields given by the L2 norm of the restriction of the covariant derivative of the vector field to its orthogonal complement. This spacelike energy is related with the energy of the vector field as a map on the tangent bundle endowed with the Kaluza–Klein metric, but it is more adapted to the situation. We compute the first and second variation of the functional and we exhibit several examples of critical points on cosmological models as generalized Robertson–Walker spaces and Godel universe, on Einstein and contact manifolds and on Lorentzian Berger’s spheres. For these critical points we have also stu…

A historical account on characterizations ofC1-manifolds in Euclidean spaces by tangent cones

2014

Abstract A historical account on characterizations of C 1 -manifolds in Euclidean spaces by tangent cones is provided. Old characterizations of smooth manifold (by tangent cones), due to Valiron (1926, 1927) and Severi (1929, 1934) are recovered; modern characterizations, due to Gluck (1966, 1968) and Tierno (1997) are restated. All these results are consequences of the Four-cones coincidence theorem due to [1] .
