The role of Private Equity-firms in the formation of strategic alliances

2014

This research analyses the role of Private Equity firms in the formation of strategic alliances within the field of the French Private Equity market. We start to provide evidence of its importance from new survey information, before offering an explanation of the organizational phenomenon. The study addresses the questions of how and why Private Equity firms act as relational intermediaries to help their portfolio companies form alliances. Both questions are investigated in the light of the Private Equity firms’ contribution to the value creation process that comes with alliance formation. Answers are provided by means of three jointly used theoretical frameworks: (1) mainstream theories (t…

The determinants of islamic banks performance : a compared and longitudinal analysis including governance mechanisms

2021

This doctoral thesis is part of a process of understanding the management of institutions practicing Islamic finance. It focuses on Islamic banks and studies their performance through some determinants offered by banking literature. The idea is to reflect on the sustainable determinants that could, on the one hand, help to better explain Islamic banking performance, and on the other hand, compare the relationships that might exist between these determinants and the different measures of banking performance (conventional and Islamic). This approach to understand Islamic banking performance includes the study of ownership structure, configuration of decision-making power, resilience to the 20…

Service public d’eau en régie : vers une gouvernance efficace ?

2021

In the French water sector, some large cities have put an end to public service delegations entrusted to private operators and have chosen to return in public control, which may seem surprising in view of the new public management advocating the private sector model. In a water sector, a “natural monopoly” marked by strong moral hazard, information asymmetries and many uncertainties, public service delegations continue to raise serious governance issues both theoretically and empirically, despite more restrictive regulations. A three-year intervention-research in a new régie, public operator, contributed to the implementation of management tools. The multiple data collected (documents, inte…

Why do Venture Capital Companies syndicate? Some New Insights

2016

International audience; Financial theory and resource-based theory are often used to explain syndication practice among venture capital (VC) firms (Lockett & Wright, 2001; Manigart et al., 2006). While extending this diverse set of theoretical frameworks, we investigate the propensity of VC firms to syndicate to provide new insights on the syndicate size, duration and the number of financing rounds of VC firms. While the existing research has focused on the entire VC entity within syndication or on the sole leader of the syndicate, our study considers both parties within the syndicate, the leader and the other syndicate members. Using a longitudinal and unique data set of 196 venture backed…

Eco-Anxiety, Connectedness to Nature & Green Equity Investments

2023

International audience; Drawing on a survey of 671 French individual investors, we document for the first time the connection between emotions towards the environment and investment in green funds. Both eco-anxiety and connectedness to nature have a significant impact on deciding to invest in green funds, but, interestingly, do not exert any influence on the amount invested. Hence, investing in green funds seems to be a way to buy a good conscience towards the environment, but the good deed ends there since the amount itself is not linked to environmentally related emotions.

Decoupling of HRM as health sector regulation

2022

This systematic review of the academic literature since early 1990s on the application of some HRM practices in health care sheds light on the persistence decoupling between institutional norms and standards related to human resource management (HRM) procedures and the actual practices in organizations. Contrary to the affirmation of NIT, translation processes do not put an end to decoupling. The isomorphisms identified by the neo institutionalists relate to leadership decisions, not practices. The application of HRM practice bundles is opposed by health care professionals. This analysis of the «critical» approach is apparently contradicted by that which we describe as «optimistic» because …

Human Resource Management rules and practices in the health sector : Why do disconnected forms of social regulation persist ?

2021

International audience; This systematic review of the academic literature since 1994 on the application of HRM rules in health care sheds light on the persistence of gaps between institutional norms and standards related to human resource management (HRM) procedures and the actual practices in organizations. Contrary to the affirmation of Scandinavian institutionalism, “translation” processes do not eliminate “controversies”, nor put an end to “decoupling”. The very grounds of new public management (NPM) are brought under question. Though not well known among English-speaking academics, Reynaud’s theory of social regulation opens the way toward explaining this phenomenon and challenges neoi…
