A dynamic business modelling approach to design and experiment new business venture strategies

2018

Abstract Business Modelling has evolved as a key activity to reflect new business venture strategy by framing the way a firm will operate and how it will function in achieving its goals (e.g., profitability, growth, innovation, social impact). However, scholars and practitioners have criticized the adoption of a too static perspective in the design and use of conventional Business Model representations. Such a static perspective prevents nascent entrepreneurs experimenting with their Business Models and, as a result, identifying the most effective strategies, especially in terms of business sustainability and profitability. In this paper, we argue that combining conventional Business Model …

The contribution of a supplier of the food and beverage industry to the sustainability of the overall supply chain

2021

Achieving sustainable scopes in a supply chain context entails structural changes at all tiers. Recently, scholars investigated different models able to achieve a sustainable supply chain management. Results show the leading role that, a major supplier, can play in promoting sub-suppliers' compliance towards sustainable principles. Reputation, legitimacy and concerns about future po…

Arguments in Favor of Moving to a Sustainable Business Model in the Apiary Industry

2017

Abstract Today’s society faces major challenges in meeting future global food demands and solving biodiversity loss, and it quickly needs to find ways in addressing these issues. The places to look for solutions come from the economic sectors that employ the most powerful pressure on these issues such as agriculture. Apiculture, as a branch of agriculture is being more and more recognized as sustaining human life and contributing to sustainability. However, the sector records a progressive decline of honey bees. Therefore, a rapid restructuring needs to take place in agricultural markets, in general, as well as in apiary agribusinesses. Although important, technological progress is insuffic…

New Business Models In-The-Making in Extant MNCs: Digital Transformation in a Telco

2017

In recent years, we can observe the emergence of firms, born both digital and global, that have disrupted existing industries. Deploying digital technologies, they have developed innovative value chains and business models that threaten established multinational companies (MNCs). In this chapter, we examine how MNCs can and do respond to the challenge digital technologies represent. We describe the main facets of digital technologies and discus the potential these have to undermine the value chains and business models of established MNCs. In order to illustrate this, we employ longitudinal data from Telenor, a leading multinational mobile telecom company. Telenor perceives digitalization as…

Dynamic business modeling for sustainability: Exploring a system dynamics perspective to develop sustainable business models

2019

In the last decade, business models for sustainability have gained increasing attraction by corporate sustainability scholars with international conferences and scientific journals encouraging the development of the debate on their design, use and innovation processes. To this end, the paper also illustrates the key operating principles of the proposed approac…

Business continuity of business models : Evaluating the resilience of business models for contingencies

2019

Company business models are vulnerable to various contingencies in the business environment that may unexpectedly render their business logic ineffective. In particular, technological advancements, such as the Internet of things, big data, sharing economy and crowdsourcing, have enabled new forms of business models that can effectively and abruptly make traditional business models obsolete. By disrupting or even diminishing companies’ revenue streams, environmental contingencies may present a significant threat to business continuity (BC). Evaluating the resilience of business models against these contingencies should therefore be a core area of BC. However, existing BC approaches tend to f…

Open source software as a service : provision of open sourcesoftware components to web application developers

2010

Over different periods, open source software and Cloud computing have both been described as the next level of evolution in the software industry. Proponents of both paradigms have investigated different approaches to develop, use and create viable business models around computer software. The advantages offered by open source software and cloud computing are often contrasted against the more traditional approaches to software development and product consumption. However, very few studies have attempted to investigate the possibility of merging the attributes of open source software and cloud computing in order to achieve operational and business efficiency. Previous researches on open sour…
