Strategy and Practice for Sustainability in Businesses in the Middle East and North Africa in a Global Perspective

2022

A business may adopt a strategy for sustainability and may implement its strategy in its practice. Our question is, how are strategy and practice coupled and shaped by entrepreneurs and businesses embedded in national eco-systems in the Middle East and North Africa and around the world? Businesses were randomly sampled and surveyed in 2021, and national conditions were assessed by experts in ten countries in the Middle East and North Africa and in Spain and other countries around the world, as part of the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor. Strategy and practice are found to have a loose coupling but are tighter in the Middle East and North Africa than in Spain. Strategy is promoted by support…

The Impacts of LBOs on the Performance of Acquired Firms: The French Case

2002

This paper investigates the financial characteristics and changes in performance of French companies involved in a leveraged buy-out. The empirical study covers a sample of 161 MBOs in France from 1988 to 1994. The acquired firms outperform their counterparts in the same sector of activity before and after the buy-out. However, unlike findings concerning LBOs in the USA and the UK, the performance of French firms falls after the operation is completed. This downturn in performance seems to be less detrimental to former subsidiaries of groups than to former family businesses.

2017

We investigate the limited use of bank and microfinance loans by Tanzanian female entrepreneurs. Using survey data, we observe that female entrepreneurs mainly use informal sources to finance their businesses. We analyze how “perceptions” of gendered cognitive and normative institutions determine whether a female entrepreneur applies for a formal loan. Following results stand out: first, we find that high collateral requirements, interest rates and personal guarantee requirements make formal loans unattractive. Second, female entrepreneurs only apply when they expect to be successful. Since they “perceive” access to finance to be more problematic for women, female entrepreneurs are discourag…

A Family Dimension in SME Owner-Managers Ownership Profiles A Psychological Ownership Perspective

2008

This paper introduces a contextual model of ownership that consists of social, action and object dimensions. We build on business ownership and family business literatures as well as that of the psychology of ownership to analyze small business owner-managers’ ownership profiles. In the empirical section we show that distinct ownership profiles can be identified and that those owner-managers who view their business as a family business have distinct profiles from those of non-family business owners. Our analysis shows that family business profiles include care-taking, stewardship and continuity as well as a perception of the company as a tool for achieving other valuable things in the world…
