Temperature-dependent mutational robustness can explain faster molecular evolution at warm temperatures, affecting speciation rate and global pattern…
2016
Distribution of species across the Earth shows strong latitudinal and altitudinal gradients with the number of species decreasing with declining temperatures. While these patterns have been recognized for well over a century, the mechanisms generating and maintaining them have remained elusive. Here, we propose a mechanistic explanation for temperature-dependent rates of molecular evolution that can influence speciation rates and global biodiversity gradients. Our hypothesis is based on the effects of temperature and temperature-adaptation on stability of proteins and other catalytic biomolecules. First, due to the nature of physical forces between biomolecules and water, stability of biomo…
Modeling and Backstepping Control of the Electronic Throttle System
2013
Published version of an article in the journal: Mathematical Problems in Engineering. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1155/2013/871674 Open access Electronic throttle is widely used in modern automotive engines. An electronic throttle system regulates the throttle plate angle by using a DC servo motor to adjust the inlet airflow rate of an internal combustion engine. Its application leads to improvements in vehicle drivability, fuel economy, and emissions. In this paper, by taking into account the dynamical behavior of the electronic throttle, the mechanism model is first built, and then the mechanism model is transformed into the state-space model. Based on the s…
Control of the Development of Swirling Airflow Dynamics and Its Impact on Biomass Combustion Characteristics
2017
Abstract The development of the swirling flame flow field and gasification/ combustion dynamics at thermo-chemical conversion of biomass pellets has experimentally been studied using a pilot device, which combines a biomass gasifier and combustor by varying the inlet conditions of the fuel-air mixture into the combustor. Experimental modelling of the formation of the cold nonreacting swirling airflow field above the inlet nozzle of the combustor and the upstream flow formation below the inlet nozzle has been carried out to assess the influence of the inlet nozzle diameter, as well primary and secondary air supply rates on the upstream flow formation and air swirl intensity, which is highly …

Robust H<inf>∞</inf> control of Markovian jump systems with mixed time delays
2010
In this paper, the problem of stability analysis and control synthesis for Markovian jump linear systems with time delays and norm-bounded uncertainties is studied. The model under consideration consists of different time-invariant discrete, neutral and distributed delays. Delay-dependent sufficient conditions for the design of a mode-dependent delayed state feedback H ∞ control are given in terms of linear matrix inequalities (LMIs). A controller which guarantees stochastic stability and a prescribed level of H ∞ performance for the closed-loop system is then developed. A Lyapunov-Krasovskii functional (LKF) method underlies the control design. A numerical example with simulation results i…
Cognitive self-healing system for future mobile networks
2015
This paper introduces a framework and implementation of a cognitive self-healing system for fault detection and compensation in future mobile networks. Performance monitoring for failure identification is based on anomaly analysis, which is a combination of the nearest neighbor anomaly scoring and statistical profiling. Case-based reasoning algorithm is used for cognitive self-healing of the detected faulty cells. Validation environment is Long Term Evolution (LTE) mobile system simulated with Network Simulator 3 (ns-3) [1, 2]. Results demonstrate that cognitive approach is efficient for compensation of cell outages and is capable to improve network coverage. Anomaly analysis can be used fo…
Supporting Institutional Awareness and Academic Advising using Clustered Study Profiles
2017
The purpose of academic advising is to help students with developing educational plans that support their academic career and personal goals, and to provide information and guidance on studies. Planning and management of the students’ study path is the main joint activity in advising. Based on a study log of passed courses, we propose to use robust, prototype-based clustering to identify a set of actual study path profiles. Such profiles identify groups of students with similar progress of studies, whose analysis and interpretation can be used for better institutional awareness and to support evidence-based academic advising. A model of automated academic advising system utilizing the possi…
