Cyclopentadiene with two coordinating sites: 1,5-bis(diphenylphosphino) -2,3,4-trimethylcyclopenta-1,3-diene

1997

Abstract The possibility of obtaining the new bidentate 1,2-diphenylphosphinocyclopentadienyl ligand has been studied. 1,5-bis(diphenylphosphino)-2,3,4-trimethylcyclopenta-1,3-diene can be formed from butanone and chlorodiphenylphosphine in eight steps. The results of chemical and spectroscopic studies reveal that a 1.5-sigmatropic migration of the diphenylphosphino group takes place: the 1,2-diphenylphosphino-substituted species are converted into 1.3 species.

Performance evaluation of a biotrickling filter treating a mixture of oxygenated VOCs during intermittent loading

2008

Laboratory scale-studies on the biodegradation of a 1:1:1 weight mixture of three oxygenated volatile organic compounds (VOCs), ethanol, ethyl acetate, and methyl-ethyl ketone (MEK) in a biotrickling filter (BTF) were carried out using two identically sized columns, filled with different polypropylene rings. The performance of the BTFs was examined for a period of 10 months applying several operational strategies. Similar performance was obtained for both supports. Intermittent flow rate of trickling liquid was shown beneficial to improve the removal efficiency (RE). Continuous feeding of VOC resulted in an excessive accumulation of biomass so high pressure drop was developed in less than 2…

Synthesis of block copolymers with poly(methyl methacrylate): P(B-b-MMA), P(EB-b-MMA), P(S-b-B-b-MMA) and P(S-b-EB-b-MMA)

1993

Well-defined diblock copolymers poly(butadiene-b-methyl methacrylate) (=P(B-b-MMA)) and triblock copolymers poly(styrene-b-butadiene-b-methyl methacrylate) (=P(S-b-B-b-MMA)) have been prepared by sequential anionic polymerization in THF. The synthesis of P(B-b-MMA) and P(S-b-B-b-MMA) was most efficient in the presence of lithium alkoxides. By this method side reactions are suppressed and the polymerization can be performed at higher temperatures. The resulting triblock copolymers have narrow molecular weight distribution. The 1,2-PB midblock was quantitatively hydrogenated with tosylhydrazide to enhance thermal stability. Alternatively the hydrogenation can be performed at elevated pressure…

Evaluation of the in-vitro cidal activity and toxicity of a novel peroxygen biocide: 2-butanone peroxide

2007

The monomer of 2-butanone peroxide is a novel peroxygen derivative with potential use as biocide in the hospital environment. The aim of this study was to test the biocidal activity of different concentrations of the compound against American Tissue Culture Collection strains from 11 different micro-organisms, including bacteria, mycobacteria, spores, fungi and virus, following the European Standard guidelines. Toxicity tests were also carried out following United States Environmental Protection Agency Standards. 2-Butanone peroxide exhibited biocidal activity at 0.12% against Legionella pneumophila, at 0.5% against Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Enterococcus hirae, and at 1% …

The crystal structure of a cockroach pheromone-binding protein suggests a new ligand binding and release mechanism.

2003

Pheromone-binding proteins (PBPs) are small helical proteins found in sensorial organs, particularly in the antennae, of moth and other insect species. They were proposed to solubilize and carry the hydrophobic pheromonal compounds through the antennal lymph to receptors, participating thus in the peri-receptor events of signal transduction. The x-ray structure of Bombyx mori PBP (BmorPBP), from male antennae, revealed a six-helix fold forming a cavity that contains the pheromone bombykol. We have identified a PBP (LmaPBP) from the cockroach Leucophaea maderae in the antennae of the females, the gender attracted by pheromones in this species. Here we report the crystal structure of LmaPBP a…

Partielle spezifische refraktionen von polymethylmethacrylat und polystyrol. I. Einfluß verschiedener lösungsmittel

1969

Predictability of properties of ternary systems solvent/solvent/polymer from interaction parameters of the binary systems—III. Analysis of binary pot…

1990

Abstract The assumption that the ternary parameter, g τ , and its derivative with respect to polymer concentration, ( ∂g τ / ∂φ 3 ) μ 1 , φ 3 → 0 , can be described by three binary interaction parameters, g o i 3 ( i = 1, 2) and g 12 , implies that these must be independent functions. This feature has been demonstrated by using g o i 3 values obtained from A/B/polymer(P) and C/D/P ternary polymer systems to predict the ternary properties, namely preferential solvation (λ), second virial coefficient ( A 2 ) and intrinsic viscosity ([η]), of a A/C/P ternary system. Two distinct polymers, polystyrene(PS) and poly(dimethylsiloxane)(PDMS), have been utilized in three solvent mixtures, benzene(BZ…

Static measurements of refractive index increments at 633 nm with a modified refractive index detector

1985

A R 401 Waters Assoc. differential refractometer has been modified to obtain the variation of refractive index increments, dn/dc, of polymer solutions at 633 nm. The introduced modifications were in the sample injection system and in the light source. The performance of the modified refractometer both with aqueous and organic solutions is analyzed. In order to localize a conformational transition in lysozyme, the dependence of dn/dc on temperature for lysozyme solutions in phosphate buffer is studied. Similarly, (dn/dc)k values for the ternary n-alkane/butanone/poly(dimethyl siloxane) systems over the whole composition range of the binary solvent mixtures are evaluated.

Pressure dependence in the methyl vinyl ketone + OH and methacrolein + OH oxidation reactions: an electronic structure study.

2005

High-level electronic structure calculations were carried out for the study of the reaction pathways in the OH-initiated oxidations of methyl vinyl ketone (MVK) and methacrolein (MACR). For the two conformers of MVK (called synperiplanar and antiperiplanar), the addition channels of OH to the terminal and central carbon atom of the double bond dominate the overall rate constant, whereas the abstraction of the methyl hydrogen atoms has no significant kinetic role. In the case of MACR, only the antiperiplanar conformer is important in its reactivity. In addition, the lower Gibbs free energy barrier for MACR corresponds to the aldehydic hydrogen abstraction reaction, which will be somewhat mor…
