The individual contribution of starter and non-starter lactic acid bacteria to the volatile organic compound composition of Caciocavallo Palermitano …
2017
Abstract The contribution of two starter ( Lactobacillus delbrueckii and Streptococcus thermophilus ) and nine non-starter ( Enterococcus casselliflavus , Enterococcus faecalis , Enterococcus durans , Enterococcus gallinarum , Lactobacillus casei , Lactobacillus paracasei , Lactobacillus rhamnosus , Pediococcus acidilactici and Pediococcus pentosaceus ) species of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) to the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) of Caciocavallo Palermitano cheese was investigated. The strains used in this study were isolated during the production/ripening of the stretched cheese and tested in a cheese-based medium (CBM). The fermented substrates were analyzed for the growth of the single …
Performance evaluation of a biotrickling filter treating a mixture of oxygenated VOCs during intermittent loading
2008
Laboratory scale-studies on the biodegradation of a 1:1:1 weight mixture of three oxygenated volatile organic compounds (VOCs), ethanol, ethyl acetate, and methyl-ethyl ketone (MEK) in a biotrickling filter (BTF) were carried out using two identically sized columns, filled with different polypropylene rings. The performance of the BTFs was examined for a period of 10 months applying several operational strategies. Similar performance was obtained for both supports. Intermittent flow rate of trickling liquid was shown beneficial to improve the removal efficiency (RE). Continuous feeding of VOC resulted in an excessive accumulation of biomass so high pressure drop was developed in less than 2…
Evaluation of the in-vitro cidal activity and toxicity of a novel peroxygen biocide: 2-butanone peroxide
2007
The monomer of 2-butanone peroxide is a novel peroxygen derivative with potential use as biocide in the hospital environment. The aim of this study was to test the biocidal activity of different concentrations of the compound against American Tissue Culture Collection strains from 11 different micro-organisms, including bacteria, mycobacteria, spores, fungi and virus, following the European Standard guidelines. Toxicity tests were also carried out following United States Environmental Protection Agency Standards. 2-Butanone peroxide exhibited biocidal activity at 0.12% against Legionella pneumophila, at 0.5% against Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Enterococcus hirae, and at 1% …
The crystal structure of a cockroach pheromone-binding protein suggests a new ligand binding and release mechanism.
2003
Pheromone-binding proteins (PBPs) are small helical proteins found in sensorial organs, particularly in the antennae, of moth and other insect species. They were proposed to solubilize and carry the hydrophobic pheromonal compounds through the antennal lymph to receptors, participating thus in the peri-receptor events of signal transduction. The x-ray structure of Bombyx mori PBP (BmorPBP), from male antennae, revealed a six-helix fold forming a cavity that contains the pheromone bombykol. We have identified a PBP (LmaPBP) from the cockroach Leucophaea maderae in the antennae of the females, the gender attracted by pheromones in this species. Here we report the crystal structure of LmaPBP a…
Pressure dependence in the methyl vinyl ketone + OH and methacrolein + OH oxidation reactions: an electronic structure study.
2005
High-level electronic structure calculations were carried out for the study of the reaction pathways in the OH-initiated oxidations of methyl vinyl ketone (MVK) and methacrolein (MACR). For the two conformers of MVK (called synperiplanar and antiperiplanar), the addition channels of OH to the terminal and central carbon atom of the double bond dominate the overall rate constant, whereas the abstraction of the methyl hydrogen atoms has no significant kinetic role. In the case of MACR, only the antiperiplanar conformer is important in its reactivity. In addition, the lower Gibbs free energy barrier for MACR corresponds to the aldehydic hydrogen abstraction reaction, which will be somewhat mor…
