Nikolaj Lilin: ital'janskij jazyk russkogo pisatelja
2013
Nicolai Lilin's “Siberian Education”, a shocking tale of the author's youth among the Siberian bandits occupying a separate neighborhood in the Transnistria town of Bendery, was a huge success on the Italian book market and was translated in most European languages. Substantial doubts were raised, however, about the truthfulness of the account. The book is written in Italian, but numerous passages show traces of a mediocre translation from the Russian, while others are impeccable. The text, thus, must have been polished by the editors, but only to a certain extent. It may be argued that this was a deliberate choice: the “rough”, strange language serves as proof of the author's origins, and …
Visual aftereffects and sensory nonlinearities from a single statistical framework
2015
When adapted to a particular scenery our senses may fool us: colors are misinterpreted, certain spatial patterns seem to fade out, and static objects appear to move in reverse. A mere empirical description of the mechanisms tuned to color, texture, and motion may tell us where these visual illusions come from. However, such empirical models of gain control do not explain why these mechanisms work in this apparently dysfunctional manner. Current normative explanations of aftereffects based on scene statistics derive gain changes by (1) invoking decorrelation and linear manifold matching/equalization, or (2) using nonlinear divisive normalization obtained from parametric scene models. These p…

Sistemic calciphylaxis and thrombotic microangiopathy in a kidney transplant patient: Two mixing fatal syndromes?
2012
Abstract Abnormalities in calcium and phosphorus metabolism are common and metabolic bone diseases develop often in patients with chronic renal failure (CRF). Effective clinical management includes measures to control phosphorus retention and prevent hyperphosphataemia, to maintain serum calcium concentrations within the normal range and to prevent excess parathyroid hormone (PTH) secretion by the judicious use of vitamin D sterols. Certain of these interventions, however, appear to increase the risk of soft tissue and vascular calcification in patients with End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD), so current therapeutic approaches are thus being re-evaluated in an effort to limit these risks. Patie…
The ⊥-Illusion Is Not a T-Illusion
2020
Variants of the capital Latin letter T were prepared with the straight strokes replaced by J-, C-, or S-curves, mimicking handwritten Ts. These were used to test the hypothesis that the overestimation of the length of the T&rsquo
On the interpretation of optical illusions.
1973
If excited by stimuli adjacent in space and time, the optical system frequently perceives illusions in the form of apparent movements. These effects may be attributed to the dynamic properties of the retinal nerve nets. On the basis of a specific psychophysical experiment the mechanism underlying the generation of optical illusions is interpreted by the methods of systems theory and its use in systems analysis is discussed. It is shown that for the perception of apparent movements the transit times of the signals in the dendrites are particularly important.
Evaluation of the performance of multifocal intraocular lenses image quality: analysis of the standard methods
2007
Purpose: To analyze the standard methods used to describe intraocular lenses (IOL) and to suggest some improvements to make them applicable for multifocal IOLs. Methods: The EN-ISO standards and the standards of the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) for the evaluation of the performance of IOLs are tested for multifocal IOLs. The MTF of the one refractive multifocal IOL and two hybrid refractive-diffractive multifocal IOLs is measured for both distance focus and near focus and using different pupil sizes. Results: The average modulation (AM) from 0 to 100 c/mm of multifocal IOLs (for the distance focus) is about 40-50% lower than the AM of monofocal IOLs, for all pupil sizes stud…
Las imágenes de la textualidad tipográfica. Brevete sobre el Format-Büchlein (Graz, 1670-1677)
2009
This study deals briefly with the content of Format-Büchlein, printed in Graz between 1670 and 1677, a work on different book formats, although it also includes many other considerations on the art of printing. I comment on some of the illustrations on typographical matters that are included in the work.
Intergovernmental Fiscal Relations: The Efficiency Effect of Taxes, Transfers, and Fiscal Illusion
2012
The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the efficiency cost of transfers. To this end, we develop a model of individual demand decisions about the provision of a regional public good that encompasses a continuum of tax–transfer scenarios to finance regional public expenditure. We assume that individuals have identical quasi-linear preferences defined over private consumption and the regional public good, that endowment income varies between individuals and regions, and that regions have different predetermined sizes. In an economy-wide resource constrained framework we show that, despite its simplicity, this model is capable of discriminating the efficiency properties of the different scen…
