Visual aftereffects and sensory nonlinearities from a single statistical framework

When adapted to a particular scenery our senses may fool us: colors are misinterpreted, certain spatial patterns seem to fade out, and static objects appear to move in reverse. A mere empirical description of the mechanisms tuned to color, texture, and motion may tell us where these visual illusions come from. However, such empirical models of gain control do not explain why these mechanisms work in this apparently dysfunctional manner. Four different C 3 N 4 specimens have been prepared, a bulk one (MCN), a thermally etched (MCN-TE), a solid prepared by hydrothermally treating MCN with H 2 O 2 (MCN-H 2 O 2 ) and a polymeric carbon nitride-hydrogen peroxide adduct (MCN-TE-H 2 O 2 ). The principal aim of this work was to correlate the capability of the prepared material to generate reactive oxygen species (ROS), under irradiation, with their photocatalytic activities in terms of conversion and selectivity for partial oxidation reactions. Subcellular distribution of ras in human and murine fibroblasts.

Abstract Ras proteins play a significant role in signal transduction in response to growth factors and in cell transformation. To be active, ras has to be translocated to the cell membrane. Since subcellular distribution has been mainly studied in vector-transformed cells which highly express ras proteins, and it has been difficult to detect ras in cells expressing the protein at physiological levels, we studied subcellular distribution in human and murine fibroblasts. Here we show for the first time that a significant amount of ras is associated with the membrane skeleton and the cytoskeleton.
