Abstract Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is the leading cause of blindness for adults in developed countries. Both microvasculopathy and neurodegeneration are implicated in mechanisms of DR development, with neuronal impairment preceding microvascular abnormalities, which is often underappreciated in the clinic. Self-reported reasons for on-duty sleepiness among commercial airline pilots

Experimental and epidemiological research has shown that human sleepiness is determined especially by the circadian and homeostatic processes. The present field study examined which work-related factors airline pilots perceive as causing on-duty sleepiness during short-haul and long-haul flights. In addition, the association between the perceived reasons for sleepiness and actual sleepiness levels was examined, as well as the association between reporting inadequate sleep causing sleepiness and actual sleep-wake history. Finger injuries caused by power-operated windows of motor vehicles: an experimental cadaver study.

The aim of this experimental cadaver study was to investigate which kinds of lesions could occur in jam events between the glass and seal entry of power-operated motor vehicle side door windows at two different closing forces. Ten hands of fresh cadaver specimens were used. Three different hand positions chosen to simulate real events in which a finger is jammed between the glass and seal entry of the window of a current motor vehicle were examined. The anatomic basis of the transversus and rectus abdominis musculoperitoneal (TRAMP) composite flap

The aim of this study was to provide an anatomic basis for the transversus and rectus abdominis musculoperitoneal (TRAMP) flap, recently successfully introduced for vulvovaginal reconstruction. In 25 cadavers the width and length of the portions of rectus and transversus abdominis muscles suitable for the TRAMP flap as well as the length and diameter of the inferior epigastric artery were assessed. The mean length of the rectus abdominis muscle was 32.42±0.48 cm and its width 6.15±0.12 cm. Effect of cycling cadence on subsequent 3 km running performance in well trained triathletes * Commentary

Objectives: To investigate the effect of three cycling cadences on a subsequent 3000 m track running performance in well trained triathletes. Methods: Nine triathletes completed a maximal cycling test, three cycle-run succession sessions (20 minutes of cycling + a 3000 m run) in random order, and one isolated run (3000 m). During the cycling bout of the cycle-run sessions, subjects had to maintain for 20 minutes one of the three cycling cadences corresponding to 60, 80, and 100 rpm.
