Currently, antegrade intramedullary nailing and minimally invasive plate osteosynthesis (MIPO) represent the main surgical alternatives in distal tibial fractures. However, neither choice is optimal for all bony and soft tissue injuries. The Retrograde Tibial Nail (RTN) is a small-caliber prototype implant, which is introduced through a 2-cm-long incision at the tip of the medial malleolus with stab incisions sufficient for interlocking. During this project, we investigated the feasibility of retrograde tibial nailing in a cadaver model and conducted biomechanical testing. Anatomical implantations of the RTN were carried out in AO/OTA 43 A1-3 fracture types in three cadaveric lower limbs. B…

Ceftolozane/Tazobactam for Treatment of Severe ESBL-Producing

2020

Abstract Background Few data are reported in the literature about the outcome of patients with severe extended-spectrum β-lactamase-producing Enterobacterales (ESBL-E) infections treated with ceftolozane/tazobactam (C/T), in empiric or definitive therapy. Methods A multicenter retrospective study was performed in Italy (June 2016–June 2019). Successful clinical outcome was defined as complete resolution of clinical signs/symptoms related to ESBL-E infection and lack of microbiological evidence of infection. The primary end point was to identify predictors of clinical failure of C/T therapy. Results C/T treatment was documented in 153 patients: pneumonia was the most common diagnosis (n = 46…

COVID-19 Infection Process in Italy and Spain: Are Data Talking? Evidence From ARMA and Vector Autoregression Models

2020

COVID-19 (coronavirus disease 2019) has spread successfully worldwide in a matter of weeks. After the example of China, all the affected countries are taking hard-confinement measures to control the infection and to gain some time to reduce the significant amount of cases that arrive at the hospital. Although the measures in China reduced the percentages of new cases, this is not seen in other countries that have taken similar measures, such as Italy and Spain. After the first weeks, the worry was whether or not the healthcare system would collapse rather than its response to the patient's needs who are infected and require hospitalization. Using China as a mirror of what could happen in ou…

Phosphodiesterase10A: abundance and circadian regulation in the retina and photoreceptor of the rat.

2011

Phosphodiesterase10A (PDE10A) is a dual specific cyclic nucleotide phosphodiesterase that is specifically enriched in striatum and which has gained attention as a therapeutic target for psychiatric disorders. The present study shows that PDE10A is also highly expressed in retinal neurons including photoreceptors. The levels of PDE10A transcript and protein display daily rhythms which could be seen in preparations of the whole retina. Corresponding changes in PDE10A mRNA were seen in photoreceptors isolated using laser microdissection. This suggests that the expressional control of the photoreceptor Pde10a gene contributes to the observed cyclicity in the amount of retinal PDE10A. The daily …

Coronary CT angiography: a guide to examination, interpretation, and clinical indications

2021

Introduction: The introduction of Cardiac Computed Tomography (CCT) has changed the paradigm in the field of diagnostic cardiovascular medicine. CCT is the primary tool in the assessment of suspected Coronary Artery Disease (CAD) and should be followed by functional assessment when needed to stratify disease and to plan potential interventional or surgical therapy. Areas Covered: We provided the current state of the knowledge on the main aspects of technique of examination, image interpretation and clinical indications. We have focused our attention on the basic routine applications and activities. Expert Opinion: The primary role of CCT in suspected CAD will progressively become the standa…

Endoscope-assisted Craniotomy

1995

We describe a surgical technique to improve visualization of deep brain structures during craniotomy. The technique, developed in a cadaveric model, combines the use of an operating microscope and a solid-rod lens endoscope. Addition of the endoscope during craniotomy allows the operator to visualize structures that otherwise might not have been seen. An approach to the brain stem is demonstrated.

Neuromuscular function during prolonged pedalling exercise at different cadences

2005

Aim: The purpose of the present work was to assess the strategies set by the central nervous system in order to provide the power output required throughout a prolonged (1-h) pedalling exercise performed at different cadences (50 rpm, 110 rpm and the freely chosen cadence). Methods: Neuromuscular (NM) activity of vastus lateralis, rectus femoris, biceps femoris and gastrocnemius lateralis muscles was studied quantitatively [root-mean square (RMS) and mean power frequency (MPF)] and qualitatively (timing of onset and offset of muscle bursts during crank cycle). Results: The present results showed that increased cadence resulted in earlier muscle activation in crank cycle. The influence of ca…

Left Renal Vein Anatomical Anomalies: Radiological and Surgical Implications

1998

Objective: To emphasize the incidence and clinical, diagnostic and surgical implications of left renal vein developmental anomalies. Design: Retrospective analysis of case notes. Setting: Clinical Anatomy Department and Surgery Department, Faculty of Medicine, University of Valencia, Spain. Patients, participants: Standard radiological examinations (CT scan) performed on 745 patients; surgical findings at operation in 128 patients with aorto-iliac atherosclerotic disease, and 72 donor cadavers for transplantation. Main outcome measures: Incidence of left renal vein anomalies (retro-aortic left renal vein and peri-aortic renal venous collar), based on radiological (CT scan) and surgical obse…

Usefulness of Stress Echocardiography in the Management of Patients Treated with Anticancer Drugs.

2021

In recent years, the survival of patients with cancer has improved thanks to advances in antineoplastic therapeutic protocols. This has led to an increasing burden of cardiovascular complications related to cancer treatment. Therefore, a new branch of cardiology has been created, ``cardio-oncology,'' with the aims of preventing cardiovascular complications related to antineoplastic treatment, achieving early diagnosis and treatment of any complications, and allowing completion of the expected antineoplastic treatment. Stress echocardiography has a pivotal role in achieving a timely diagnosis of coronary artery disease and thus is the best management approach in this clinical setting. Athero…
