Future challenges and chances in the diagnosis and management of invasive mould infections in cancer patients

2020

Abstract Diagnosis, treatment, and management of invasive mould infections (IMI) are challenged by several risk factors, including local epidemiological characteristics, the emergence of fungal resistance and the innate resistance of emerging pathogens, the use of new immunosuppressants, as well as off-target effects of new oncological drugs. The presence of specific host genetic variants and the patient's immune system status may also influence the establishment of an IMI and the outcome of its therapy. Immunological components can thus be expected to play a pivotal role not only in the risk assessment and diagnosis, but also in the treatment of IMI. Cytokines could improve the reliability…

Inflammation and endothelial activation are linked to renal function in long-term kidney transplantation

2006

The aim of this study was to investigate the relationships between inflammation and adhesion molecules in long-term kidney transplantation. We measured serum concentrations of tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNFalpha) and intercellular and vascular cell adhesion molecules (ICAM-1 and VCAM-1) in 35 renal transplant recipients (mean age of transplantation 5 +/- 3 years) and in 35 chronic renal insufficiency (CRI) patients; twenty-six healthy subjects were enrolled as controls. Transplanted showed higher values than controls of TNFalpha (P < 0.0001), ICAM-1 (P < 0.0001), and VCAM-1 (P < 0.0001). CRI group as well exhibited higher concentrations than controls of TNFalpha (P < 0.0001), ICAM-1 (P < …

Effect of cycling cadence on contractile and neural properties of knee extensors.

2001

LEPERS, R., G. Y. MILLET, and N. A. MAFFIULETTI. Effect of cycling cadence on contractile and neural properties of knee extensors. Med. Sci. Sports Exerc., Vol. 33, No. 11, 2001, pp. 1882–1888. Purpose: This study investigated the effect of prior prolonged cycling exercise performed at different cadences on subsequent neuromuscular characteristics. Methods: Eight well-trained triathletes sustained 80% of their maximal aerobic power during 30 min at three cadences: the freely chosen cadence (FCC), FCC20%, and FCC20%. Maximal isometric and concentric (120°·s 1 and 240°·s 1 ) torques were recorded before and after the exercise. Central activation, neural (M-wave), and contractile (isometric mu…

Effects of a Short-Term Aquatic Resistance Program on Strength and Body Composition in Fit Young Men

2009

This study was designed to analyze the effects of a short-term periodized aquatic resistance program (PARP) on upper-limb maximum strength, leg muscular power, and body composition (BC) in fit young men. Twenty subjects (21.2 +- 1.17 years) were randomly assigned to an exercise or control group; 12 subjects completed the study. The aquatic exercise group (AEG; n = 7) participated in an 8-week supervised program of 3 d.wk-1, and the control group (CG; n = 5) maintained their regular activities. The PARP consisted of a total-body resistance exercise workout using aquatic devices that increased drag force, with a cadence of movement controlled and adjusted individually for each exercise and su…

A method for monitoring intensity during aquatic resistance exercises.

2008

The aims of this study were (i) to check whether monitoring of both the rhythm of execution and the perceived effort is a valid tool for reproducing the same intensity of effort in different sets of the same aquatic resistance exercise (ARE) and (ii) to assess whether this method allows the ARE to be put at the same intensity level as its equivalent carried out on dry land. Four healthy trained young men performed horizontal shoulder abduction and adduction (HSAb/Ad) movements in water and on dry land. Muscle activation was recorded using surface electromyography of 1 stabilizer and several agonist muscles. Before the final tests, the ARE movement cadence was established individually follow…

Allogenic simple limbal epithelial transplantation (alloSLET) from cadaveric donor eyes in patients with persistent corneal epithelial defects

2020

Background/aimTo describe the clinical outcome of allogenic simple limbal epithelial transplantation (alloSLET) utilising tissue from cadaveric donor eyes after failed re-epithelialisation of the corneal surface.MethodsMedical records of 14 eyes from 14 patients treated for persistent corneal epithelial defects with alloSLET were reviewed. The primary outcome measure was complete epithelialisation of the corneal surface. Secondary outcome measures were best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) and postoperative side effects due to surgery or medical therapy.ResultsOf the 14 eyes, 7 received alloSLET only and 7 alloSLET together with penetrating keratoplasty (PK). Thirteen (92.9%) of 14 eyes had a…

Real-time control for transscleral cyclophotocoagulation.

1998

• Background: In transscleral cyclophotocoagulation, the surgeon cannot directly observe the applied laser effects. Overdosage, possibly resulting in unwanted pop effects, or underdosage with no therapeutic effect therefore often occur. • Method and materials: Laser radiation passing through the sclera and ciliary body is partly reflected from the fundus and can be monitored from outside the eye by a detector system. Since all other parameters influencing the intensity of the recorded radiation are constant in time during one laser exposure, the time dependence of this radiation directly reflects the change of transmission of the treated tissue. The laser exposure therefore can be stopped b…

Temporal relationship between nocturnal erections and rapid eye movement episodes in healthy men.

2003

The exact temporal relationship between spontaneous nocturnal erections and rapid eye movement (REM) sleep was studied in healthy men with the aim of creating a basis for a more sophisticated analysis of nocturnal erection measurements in physiological research and clinical applications. The vast majority of erectile events was coupled to REM episodes, where the latency between the beginning of erections and REM episodes showed a large variability. Moreover, a correlation analysis revealed a highly significant decrease of the latency over the course of the night. The time variant properties of the coupling between erections and REM sleep point to more complex dynamics of the central control…

The effects of omeprazole 20 and 40 mg twice daily on intragastric acidity in duodenal ulcer patients.

1996

BACKGROUND: The combination of omeprazole with amoxycillin or clarithromycin is used as treatment against Helicobacter pylori. It seems likely that the antibacterial activity of the antibiotic may be improved by increasing gastric pH towards neutrality, and a twice daily regimen of omeprazole is probably needed. AIM: To assess the effects of twice daily administration of omeprazole 20 and 40 mg. METHODS: Twelve duodenal ulcer patients in remission were randomized to receive in single-blind fashion either placebo, omeprazole 20 mg or omeprazole 40 mg twice daily (08.00 and 20.00 h). On the sixth day of dosing they underwent 24-h gastric pH-metry. RESULTS: Omeprazole 20 and 40 mg b.d. produce…
