Atomic beam magnetic resonance apparatus for systematic measurement of hyperfine structure anomalies (Bohr-Weisskopf effect)

Abstract An atomic beam magnetic resonance (ABMR) apparatus has been constructed at Orsay, and has been installed at the CERN PS Booster ISOLDE mass separator facility for “on-line” work with radioactive isotopes in a program to measure hyperfine structure anomalies (the Bohr-Weisskopf effect) over long isotopic chains. The hfs anomalies result from the effect of the spatial distribution of the nuclear magnetization on the atomic hfs interaction. Formation of melanin-based wing patterns is influenced by condition and immune challenge in Pieris brassicae

According to life-history theory, trade-offs emerge because organisms possess a limited amount of resources that they have to allocate between different bodily functions. Here, we tested whether there is a trade-off between melanin-based immune response and dark melanized wing patterning in the large white butterfly, Pieris brassicae L. (Lepidoptera: Pieridae), by activating the immune system of pupae and measuring the wing pigmentation of freshly emerged adults. In contrast to expectations, we did not find any negative associations between immune challenge and wing patterning. Phytosociological survey of juniper wood vegetation in Tajikistan (Middle Asia)

The paper presents the first syntaxonomic classification for juniper wood communities in Tajikistan with some remarks on their environmental gradients. A total of 119 relevés were sampled between 2015 and 2021 using the seven-degree Braun-Blanquet cover-abundance scale. They were classified by a modified TWINSPAN method. Diagnostic species were identified using phi coefficient as a fidelity measure. Detrended Correspondence Analysis (DCA) was used to determine relationships between samples, vegetation units and major gradients in species composition. Chequered blue butterfly, Scolitantides orion (Lepidoptera: Lycaenidae) has severely declined in many parts of Europe and is currently red-listed in many countries. We studied the population structure and turnover of the species in a lake-island system in a National Park in eastern Finland over a three-year period. The incidence of the chequered blue on the suitable islands (n = 41) and habitat patches (n = 123) was high: an average of 82% of the islands and patches were occupied over the three year period. Thiopentone concentrations in blood following injection of the induction solution (Thiopental, 2.5%) may be critical in the context of lethal complications arising during induction of anaesthesia and thereby the toxicological aspects of this drug can become an issue in forensic considerations. The study was designed to find out whether the dose of injected thiopentone may be calculated from blood levels measured in nine pregnant and ten non-pregnant patients. CiliaCarta: An integrated and validated compendium of ciliary genes

The cilium is an essential organelle at the surface of mammalian cells whose dysfunction causes a wide range of genetic diseases collectively called ciliopathies. The current rate at which new ciliopathy genes are identified suggests that many ciliary components remain undiscovered. We generated and rigorously analyzed genomic, proteomic, transcriptomic and evolutionary data and systematically integrated these using Bayesian statistics into a predictive score for ciliary function.
