Dracaena draco (Dracaenaceae) spontaneizzata a Palermo (Nord Sicilia)
2013
Dracaena draco (Dracaenaceae), naturalized in Palermo (N Sicily). – Dracaena draco L., an evergreen tree from the Atlantic islands (Canary, Cape verde and Madera Islands) introduced in Sicily in the second half of the XIX Century as an ornamental plant, was found naturalized on the Mount Pellegrino slopes (Palermo). La classe Parietarietea judaicae Oberd. 1977 in Italia.
2002
The class Parietarietea judaicae Oberd. 1977 in Italy. On the basis of literature and unpublished data, a synthesis on the synanthropic chasmophilous perennial vegetation occurring in the Italian territories has been carried out. These plant communities are linked to masonry walls and rocky faces heavily disturbed by man, and are dominated by hemicryptophytes, chamaephytes and bryophytes. From the syntaxonomical point of view, in accordance with the majority of the authors who studied the matter, the wall vegetation should be ascribed to a well-distinguished class, Parietarietea judaicae Oberd. 1977, rather than to the Asplenietea trichomanis class, as proposed by other authors. Within the …
Artificial environmental conditions can affect allozyme genetic structure of the marine gastropod Patella caerulea
2001
Samples of the Mediterranean limpet Patella caerulea collected from 10 sites were examined for genetic population structure. Six of the 20 identified enzymatic loci were polymorphic. The AAT* locus was polymorphic only in two samples from an artificial environment (TI2 and PE). The proportion of polymorphic loci ranged from 0.20 to 0.30, and the observed and expected mean heterozygosity varied between 0.098 and 0.076 and between 0.109 and 0.086, respectively. Mean Fis values were significantly positive in AAT*, ESTD*, PEPC-2*, and PEPD*, showing heterozygosity deficiency. In all, mean Fst value of 0.007 indicated high genetic homogeneity between the samples analyzed, whereas single-locus Fs…
Volatile components from flowers of Centaurea nicaeensis All., C. parlatoris Helder, C. solstitialis L., ssp. schouwii (DC.) Dostàl wild growing in S…
2008
The volatile constituents of the flowerheads of Centaurea nicaeensis All., C. parlatoris Helder and C. solstitialis L. ssp. schouwii (DC.) Dostal were extracted by hydrodistillation and analysed by GC and GC-MS. Altogether 113 components were identified. Fatty acids and hydrocarbons were the most abundant components in the oils. Caryophyllene and caryophyllene oxide were the main compounds of the sesquiterpene fraction. The study on the biological activity of the oils shows no significant activity.

Cesaropapismo y competencia jurisdiccional. Patronato regio contra vicarios apostólicos en Sicilia (siglos XVI-XVII)
2023
The several spiritual and ecclesiastical powers held by the Crown in the Kingdom of Sicily during the early modern age was very often translated into jurisdictional competences precisely among the ecclesiastical courts: each of them tried, indeed, to extend his own prerogatives over forists and crimes in harm of the others, putting its "falcem in alienam messem". The defendants themselves, often clerics, were well aware of this jurisdictional competition and tried, often successfully, to take advantage of it, sometimes involving Roman Congregations and Courts. Other times it was the same Holy See to tackle the Sicilian caesaropapism head on, sending commissars and apostolic vicars in quarre…

A total of 75 powdered infant milk formula (PIF) samples collected from pharmacies and drugstores in Western Sicily, Italy, and representative of 12 different brands were analyzed in this study to evaluate their microbiological quality. According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration protocol, 32 samples out of 75 were contaminated by enterobacteria. Commercial biochemical API(r) 20E-system identification method indicated that six PIF samples were presumptively contaminated by Cronobacter spp., but further characterization by alpha-glucosidase based polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay identification strongly suggested that these strains did not belong to the genus Cronobacter. Phylogen…
