Il ‘proprium quaestionis crimen’ e la strategia difensiva nella Pro Caelio di Cicerone
2020
The paper proposes a revised analysis of the speech, which was delivered by Cicero on behalf of Marcus Caelius. Numerous studies have shown the importance of the rhetorical aspects of this speech. The aim of this analysis is to examine its legal aspects. Firstly, many sources containing abundant evidence regarding the causae de vi ex lege Plautia will be examined in order to identify, among the many allegations made by opponents of this causa, those for which Caelius ex lege Plautia was responsible. Secondly, having identified the ex lege Plautia charges, the defensive strategy, which is specifically aimed at defending Caelius from the charge of Dione’s murder, will be thoroughly analysed. …
Crystal structure, Hirshfeld surface analysis and electrostatic potential study of naturally occurring cassane-type diterpenoid Pulcherrimin C monohy…
2019
Single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis and Hirshfeld surface analysis of the title compound were carried out to analyse quantitatively the intermolecular interactions involved in the crystal packing. The electrostatic potential surface was generated over the Hirshfeld surface to visualize the potential active sites.
Caesarean Section on Maternal Request-Ethical and Juridic Issues: A Narrative Review.
2022
In recent decades, the rate of caesarean deliveries has increased worldwide. The reasons for this trend are still largely misunderstood and controversial among researchers. The decision often depends on the obstetrician, his beliefs and experience, the characteristics of the patients, the hospital environment and its internal protocols, the increasing use of induction of labor, the medico-legal implications, and, finally, the mother’s ability to request delivery by caesarean section without medical indication. This review aims to describe the reasons behind the increasing demand for caesarean sections by patients (CDMR) and strategies aimed at reducing caesarean section rates and educating …
Stercorary aseptic peritonitis due to diastatic caecal perforation: Computed tomography findings
2006
Caecal perforation is a complication secondary to colon obstruction. It may present with insidious clinical features and may be associated with chronic constipation. The event may become severe due to the peritonitic development. We present a case of caecal perforation associated with sub-occlusive carcinoma of the left colon and hypotonic colitis caused by chronic lavative abuse, demonstrated with Computed Tomography.
A health promotion intervention to improve lifestyle choices and health outcomes in people with psychosis: a research programme including the IMPaCT …
2020
Background People with psychotic disorders have reduced life expectancy largely because of physical health problems, especially cardiovascular disease, that are complicated by the use of tobacco and cannabis. Objectives We set out to (1) chart lifestyle and substance use choices and the emergence of cardiometabolic risk from the earliest presentation with psychosis, (2) develop a pragmatic health promotion intervention integrated within the clinical teams to improve the lifestyle choices and health outcomes of people with psychosis and (3) evaluate the clinical effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of that health promotion intervention. Design We performed a longitudinal cohort study of peo…
Phenotypic tradeoffs between egg number and egg size in three parasitic anisakid nematodes
2007
Phenotypic tradeoffs between number and size of eggs were tested in three component populations of three marine anisakid nematodes: Anisakis simplex, Pseudoterranova decipiens and Contracaecum osculatum. Body and uterine volumes (as proxies of female size), and egg number, mean egg volume and clutch volume (as descriptors of reproductive output) were measured in 50 females of each species. Evidence of a phenotypic tradeoff was detected only in A. simplex; the first time that has been found in a parasite population. Comparison of feasible values inferred from the van Noordwijk and de Jong's model and current data showed that interindividual variation in egg size was narrower than expected in…
Spatial analysis of lanner falcon habitat preferences: Implications for agro-ecosystems management at landscape scale and raptor conservation
2014
Abstract Sicily hosts the largest European population of the endangered lanner falcon, a poorly known species which needs conservation planning based on habitat preferences. A distribution model on 10 × 10 km cells of Sicily was described using Generalized Linear Models and variation partitioning methods. This modelling approach extracted explanatory factors, pure and joint effects of greatest influence from subsets of variables controlled for multi-collinearity and spatial autocorrelation. Analytical cartography used the environmental favourability function to assess habitat preferences, and the insecurity index estimated the degree to which lanner falcon occupancy is represented in the Na…
An individual based model for the conservation of the endangered Large Blue Butterfly, Maculinea arion (Lepidoptera: Lycaenidae)
2002
Abstract European populations of the Large Blue Butterfly Maculinea arion have experienced severe declines during the 20th century, especially in the northern part of the species’ range. This endangered lycaenid butterfly needs two resources for development: flower buds of specific plants ( Thymus spp., Origanum vulgare ), on which young caterpillars briefly feed, and red ants of the genus Myrmica , whose nests support caterpillars during a prolonged final instar. In order to improve understanding of those mechanisms that are most influential to population dynamics of the butterfly, we developed a stochastic population model. This individual based model implements three main biological comp…
The Role of the α Cell in the Pathogenesis of Diabetes: A World beyond the Mirror
2021
Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) is one of the most prevalent chronic metabolic disorders, and insulin has been placed at the epicentre of its pathophysiological basis. However, the involvement of impaired alpha (α) cell function has been recognized as playing an essential role in several diseases, since hyperglucagonemia has been evidenced in both Type 1 and T2DM. This phenomenon has been attributed to intra-islet defects, like modifications in pancreatic α cell mass or dysfunction in glucagon’s secretion. Emerging evidence has shown that chronic hyperglycaemia provokes changes in the Langerhans’ islets cytoarchitecture, including α cell hyperplasia, pancreatic beta (β) cell dedifferentiati…
