Multiplicity of solutions of Dirichlet problems associated with second-order equations in ℝ2

AbstractWe study the existence of multiple solutions for a two-point boundary-value problem associated with a planar system of second-order ordinary differential equations by using a shooting technique. We consider asymptotically linear nonlinearities satisfying suitable sign conditions. Multiplicity is ensured by assumptions involving the Morse indices of the linearizations at zero and at infinity.

The lattice of subgroups of a group is the subject of numerous results revolving around the central theme of decomposing the group into "chunks" (subquotients) that can then be compared to one another in various ways. Examples of results in this class would be the Noether isomorphism theorems, Zassenhaus' butterfly lemma, the Schreier refinement theorem for subnormal series of subgroups, the Dedekind modularity law, and last but not least the Jordan-H\"older theorem. We discuss analogues of the above-mentioned results in the context of locally compact quantum groups and linearly reductive quantum groups. Abstract A Kurzweil-Henstock type integral defined on a zero-dimensional compact abelian group is studied and used to obtain a generalization of some results related to the problem of recovering, by generalized Fourier formulae, the coefficients of convergent series with respect to the characters of such a group.

Effect of claustrum stimulation on neurons of the contralateral medial oculomotor area, in the cat

In chloralose-anaesthetized cats, the extracellular spontaneous unitary activity was recorded from 157 neurons, located in the medial oculomotor area. 98 units were identified as projecting onto the superior colliculus. Electrical stimulations of the contralateral claustrum provoked, on 13 of these cells, an excitatory effect, lasting 10-35 ms and appearing with a latency of 20-50 ms. Full length section of the corpus callosum totally abolished the contralateral claustrum effect. The results suggest that in the cat, the claustrum may have a role in the bilateral control of the visuo-motor performance.
Determination of Young’s modulus of Sb2S3 nanowires by in situ resonance and bending methods

In this study we address the mechanical properties of Sb2S3 nanowires and determine their Young’s modulus using in situ electric-field-induced mechanical resonance and static bending tests on individual Sb2S3 nanowires with cross-sectional areas ranging from 1.1·104 nm2 to 7.8·104 nm2. Mutually orthogonal resonances are observed and their origin explained by asymmetric cross section of nanowires. The results obtained from the two methods are consistent and show that nanowires exhibit Young’s moduli comparable to the value for macroscopic material. An increasing trend of measured values of Young’s modulus is observed for smaller thickness samples.

The Resistant Management (RM) of Bt corn in US requires 20% refuge area planted with non transgenic maize to preserve susceptible individuals of the pest. In Europe, especially in Italy, different considerations are necessary when RM plans are to be applied.
