Identification of a 58-kilodalton cell surface fibrinogen-binding mannoprotein from Candida albicans.
1992
Treatment of both yeast (blastoconidia) and hyphal (blastoconidia with germ tubes) cells of Candida albicans with beta-mercaptoethanol (beta ME) releases a complex array of cell wall-bound proteins and glycoproteins. Analysis by sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and Western immunoblotting with fibrinogen-anti-fibrinogen antibody allowed the identification of a 58-kDa mannoprotein (mp58) in both extracts which specifically interacts with human fibrinogen. Treatment of intact cells with low concentrations of beta-glucanase (Zymolyase 20T) for short periods or with beta ME abolished or significantly reduced binding of fibrinogen. A rabbit polyclonal antiserum was raised…
Increased susceptibility of complement factor B/C2 double knockout mice and mannan-binding lectin knockout mice to systemic infection with Candida al…
2008
Candida albicans is the major cause of systemic fungal infections in immunocompromised patients. We investigated the susceptibility of mice deficient in complement factor B and C2 (Bf/C2-/-), C1q (C1qa-/-), and mannan-binding lectin (MBL)-A (MBL-A) and MBL-C (MBL-A/C-/-) to systemic infection with C. albicans. Animals were infected i.p. with 10(8)C. albicans blastoconidia and monitored for mortality. Bf/C2-/- mice showed high mortality (over 90%) within the study period of 3 weeks. In contrast, mortality in C1qa-/- mice was below 15% whereas that of MBL-A/C-/- mice was 40% (P0.001). Intravenous infection of mice with 8x10(5) blastoconidia resulted in the same trend with Bf/C2-/- mice being …
INCANDIDABILITÀ DEGLI AMMINISTRATORI EX ART. 143, COMMA 11, T.U.E.L. ALLA LUCE DELLE MODIFICHE INTRODOTTE DAL D.L. N. 113/2018 E DELLE PROPOSTE DI LE…

L’art.
Epidemiology, clinical characteristics, resistance, and treatment of infections by
2018
Candida spp. infections are a major cause of morbidity and mortality in critically ill patients. Candida auris is an emerging multi-drug-resistant fungus that is rapidly spreading worldwide. Since the first reports in 2009, many isolates across five continents have been identified as agents of hospital-associated infections. Independent and simultaneous outbreaks of C. auris are becoming a major concern for healthcare and scientific community. Moreover, laboratory misidentification and multi-drug-resistant profiles, rarely observed for other non-albicans Candida species, result in difficult eradication and frequent therapeutic failures of C. auris infections. The aim of this review was to p…
European expert opinion on the management of invasive candidiasis in adults
2011
Item does not contain fulltext This report discusses the present status of antifungal therapy and treatment options for candidaemia, considered by experts in the field in Europe. A conference of 26 experts from 13 European countries was held to discuss strategies for the treatment and prevention of invasive candidiasis, with the aim of providing a review on optimal management strategies. Published and unpublished comparative trials on antifungal therapy were analysed and discussed. Commonly asked questions about the management of candidaemia were selected, and possible responses to these questions were discussed. Panellists were then asked to respond to each question by using a touchpad ans…
The THESEUS space mission concept: science case, design and expected performances
2018
THESEUS is a space mission concept aimed at exploiting Gamma-Ray Bursts for investigating the early Universe and at providing a substantial advancement of multi-messenger and time-domain astrophysics. These goals will be achieved through a unique combination of instruments allowing GRB and X-ray transient detection over a broad field of view (more than 1sr) with 0.5¿1 arcmin localization, an energy band extending from several MeV down to 0.3¿keV and high sensitivity to transient sources in the soft X-ray domain, as well as on-board prompt (few minutes) follow-up with a 0.7¿m class IR telescope with both imaging and spectroscopic capabilities. THESEUS will be perfectly suited for addressing …
The Ph.D.-candidate as an information literate resource: developing research support and information literacy skills in an informal setting
2013
Published version of an article in the journal Liber Quarterly, Open Access This article aims to suggest a new way of developing research support for PhD-candidates. Previous research on the field of research support is greatly focused on librarians’ competencies and how to assist researchers with what they lack in information literacy (IL) skills. There is little focus on collaboration with researchers to achieve a mutual learning outcome in regard to developing research support and IL skills. A socio-cultural view on IL indicates that IL skills are developed in a context, and therefore are situated. A high level of IL in one situation could be regarded as insufficient in another. Therefor…

Chemical composition and biological activities of Artemisia judaica essential oil from southern desert of Jordan
2016
Abstract Ethnopharmacologic relevance Artemisia judaica L. (Arabic name: Beithran ), is a medicinal and aromatic plant growing in the valley bottoms of desert areas, particularly in the southern desert of Jordan nearest to the Jordan-Saudi Arabia borders and in Wadi Araba in the Southern Badia. In Jordan, A. judaica is widely used in traditional medicine being recommended by aboriginal Bedouins in the North Badia region of Jordan as calmative. Furthermore, it is used for the treatment of stomach ache, heart diseases, sexual weakness, diabetes, gastro-intestinal disorders and external wounding. Additionally, other folk medicines of the Arabic region commonly use this aromatic plant for the t…
TLR2, TLR4 and Dectin-1 signalling in hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells determines the antifungal phenotype of the macrophages they produce
2016
TLRs represent an attractive target for the stimulation of myeloid cell production by HSPCs. We have previously demonstrated that HSPCs use TLR2 to sense Candida albicans in vivo and induce the production of macrophages. In this work, we used an in vitro model of HSPCs differentiation to investigate the functional consequences for macrophages of exposure of HSPCs to various PAMPs and C. albicans cells. Mouse HSPCs (Lin(-) cells) were cultured with M-CSF to induce macrophage differentiation, in the presence or absence of the following PRR agonists: Pam3CSK4 (TLR2 ligand), LPS (TLR4 ligand), depleted zymosan (which only activates Dectin-1), or C. albicans yeasts (which activate several PRRs, …
