Palaeohistology helps reveal taxonomic variability in exceptionally large temnospondyl humeri from the Upper Triassic of Krasiejów, SW Poland

For more than twenty years, palaeontological excavations have been carried out at the Upper Triassic site of Krasiejów (south-west Poland), providing thousands of skeletal elements belonging to various tetrapod groups. However, almost all bones are preserved in a disarticulated state. This generates problems in taxonomic assignment among closely related groups, e.g., stereospondyl amphibians. As far as cranial elements, the pectoral girdle bones and the intercentra are very diagnostic, while all other remaining skeletal elements are difficult to unambiguously assign between either the capitosaurid Cyclotosaurus intermedius or the trematosaurid Metoposaurus krasiejowensis, both originating f…

A decade long monitoring programme has revealed a flourishing population of the non-indigenous skeleton shrimp Paracaprella pusilla in the vicinity of outfalls of desalination plants off the Mediterranean coast of Israel. The first specimens were collected in 2010, thus predating all previously published records of this species in the Mediterranean Sea. The alien freshwater amphipod of Ponto-Caspian origin, Dikerogammarus villosus, also known as the killer shrimp, is recognized as being one of the worst invasive alien species in Europe, representing a major conservation problem. Recently, the species has been reported to invade lakes in the Alps in putative association with overland transport linked with recreational activities. This study provided a method to assess risk associated with this overland transport and an opportunity to set up a rationale for effective preventive conservation management. Time trials versus time-to-exhaustion tests: Effects on critical power, W0, and oxygen-uptake kinetics

Purpose: To investigate single-day time-to-exhaustion (TTE) and time-trial (TT) -based laboratory tests values of critical power (CP), W prime (W0), and respective oxygen-uptake-kinetic responses. Methods: Twelve cyclists performed a maximal ramp test followed by 3 TTE and 3 TT efforts interspersed by 60 min recovery between efforts. Oxygen uptake (VO 2) was measured during all trials. The mean response time was calculated as a description of the overall VO 2-kinetic response from the onset to 2 min of exercise. Abstract Halogens are known to play an important role in the tropospheric ozone-depletion chemistry and are of special interest because of their influence on the atmospheric oxidation capacity. In this paper, we investigate the application of a capillary diffusion technique for the generation of gaseous halogen standards like Br 2 , IBr, ICl and I 2 .
