Ethanol inhibits astroglial cell proliferation by disruption of phospholipase D-mediated signaling.

The activation of phospholipase D (PLD) is a common response to mitogenic stimuli in various cell types. As PLD-mediated signaling is known to be disrupted in the presence of ethanol, we tested whether PLD is involved in the ethanol-induced inhibition of cell proliferation in rat cortical primary astrocytes. Readdition of fetal calf serum (FCS) to serum-deprived astroglial cultures caused a rapid, threefold increase of PLD activity and a strong mitogenic response; both effects were dependent on tyrosine kinases but not on protein kinase C. Using samples of many human blood vessels, obtained at autopsy and specific antibodies directed to peptide sequences of the kinin B1 and B2 receptors, we demonstrate the localisation of these receptors within the human vascular system using standard immunolabelling techniques. In large elastic arteries and veins, kinin receptors are present only in the endothelial cells whereas in all muscular arteries and arterioles, these receptors are present in both the endothelial and smooth muscle cells. In the present study, groups of juvenile Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) were fed gelatine capsules containing fish-food spiked with PFOA or PFOS (0.2 mg kg(-1) fish) and solvent (methanol). The capsules were given at days 0, 3 and 6. Blood, liver and whole kidney samples were collected prior to exposure (no solvent control), and at days 2, 5, 8 and 14 after exposure (Note: that day 14 after exposure is equal to 7d recovery period). A case of splenic rupture: A rare event after laparoscopic cholecystectomy

Background Laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC) is generally safe and well-accepted. In rare cases, it is associated with complications (intra- e postoperative bleeding, visceral injury and surgical site infection). Splenic lesion has been reported only after direct trauma. We report an unusual case of splenic rupture presenting after “uncomplicated” LC. Case presentation A 77-year-old woman presented with distended abdomen, tenderness in the left upper quadrant and severe anemia 12 hours after LC. Clinical examination revealed hypovolemic shock. Physically demanding essential military tasks include load carriage, manual material handling and casualty evacuation. This narrative review characterizes the main physical attributes related to performance of these occupational tasks and reviews physical training intervention studies in military settings to improve performance in these military tasks. Load carriage performance requires both aerobic and neuromuscular fitness with greater emphasis on maximal strength and absolute maximal oxygen uptake, especially when carrying heavier loads. Understanding how a specific exercise changes daily activity patterns is important when designing physical activity interventions. We examined the effects of strength and interval running exercise sessions on daily activity patterns using recordings of quadriceps and hamstring muscle electromyographic (EMG) activity and inactivity.
