The efficacy of acupuncture in human pain models: A randomized, controlled, double-blinded study
2012
Acupuncture is frequently used to treat pain, although data supporting the analgesic efficacy from placebo-controlled studies is sparse. In order to get evidence for acupuncture analgesia we performed a study with 2 well-recognized experimental human pain models - the cold-pressor (CP) test and intradermal capsaicin injection. Fifty healthy men were included. Our study compared Traditional Chinese Medicine-based acupuncture to sham acupuncture with Streitberger placebo needles in a randomized, controlled, double-blinded trial. The primary endpoint was the reduction of mean pain intensity during 3minutes of CP test or of mean pain intensity within 10minutes after capsaicin injection. Seconda…

Posterior chamber phakic intraocular lenses to correct high myopia: A comparative study between Staar and Adatomed models
2001
ABSTRACT PURPOSE: To determine the feasibility of using posterior chamber phakic intraocular lenses (PIOLs) to treat high myopia, comparing two different models, Staar and Adatomed. METHODS: Twenty-four eyes from 12 patients were studied prospectively. A phakic Staar IOL was implanted in one eye of each patient, and the other eye received a phakic Adatomed IOL. Patients with uveitis or ocular trauma prior to ocular surgery, diabetic retinopathy, or capsular pseudoexfoliation were excluded. The mean preoperative spherical equivalent refraction was -16.00 ± 5.05 D for the Staar group and -15.39 ± 2.83 D for the Adatomed group. Average follow-up was 32.4 months (range, 19 to 46 mo) for the Ada…
Long-Term Functional Outcome after Unilateral Cordectomy
2010
<i>Purpose of the Study:</i> Our aim was to longitudinally analyze the vocal outcome after endoscopic CO2 laser resection of early glottic carcinoma. <i>Procedures:</i> Sixteen patients treated with laser surgery for T1 or T2 tumors of the vocal cords received voice therapy and were examined 1, 2, 3, 4.5, 6 and 12 months postoperatively. Besides videolaryngostroboscopy, each examination included history, phonetogram of the speaking and the singing voice, language-specific hoarseness diagram and a questionnaire (Voice Handicap Index 12 in German). <i>Results:</i> Objective parameters demonstrated a broad variability with a slight ten…
Treatment of central and sensorineural tinnitus with orally administered Melatonin and Sulodexide: personal experience from a randomized controlled s…
2008
Since very little is understood about the exact aetiology of tinnitus, this has made treatment of the condition difficult. Even though approximately 10-15% of the general population suffer from tinnitus, only 2% consider it serious enough to warrant any treatment. The main problem arising from tinnitus is the disturbance it causes not only in day to day life but also in sleep, leading to fatigue and general discomfort. The present study focused on the effect of Melatonin in conjunction with Sulodexide as a treatment method for tinnitus. Overall, 102 patients suffering from tinnitus were evaluated in a prospective randomised controlled study conducted in a tertiary care ENT department. After…
The effects of arterial carbon dioxide partial pressure and sevoflurane on capillary venous cerebral blood flow and oxygen saturation during cranioto…
2009
Intraoperative routine monitoring of cerebral blood flow and oxygenation remains a technological challenge. Using the physiological principle of carbon dioxide reactivity of cerebral vasculature, we investigated a recently developed neuromonitoring device (oxygen-to-see, O2C device) for simultaneous measurements of regional cerebral blood flow (rvCBF), blood flow velocity (rvVelo), oxygen saturation (srvO2), and hemoglobin amount (rvHb) at the capillary venous level in patients subjected to craniotomy. METHODS: Twenty-six neurosurgical patients were randomly assigned to anesthesia with 1.4% or 2.0% sevoflurane end-tidal concentration. After craniotomy, a fiberoptic probe was applied on a ma…
Impact of HBV genotypes A and D genetic variability on infection evolution
2015
HBV is characterized by a high genetic variability, which is the basis of its classification into eight genotypes (A-H). HBV infection is associated with different outcomes, from self-limiting acute hepatitis to active chronic hepatitis, asymptomatic carriage, and occult infection. The aim of this study was to analyze the genetic variability of HBV genotypes A and D isolates from 79 cases of self-limiting acute hepatitis and chronic hepatitis, in order to identify HBV variants associated with resolution or chronicity of acute HBV infection. The entire preS-S sequence and a fragment of 346 bp of the preC-C region, containing Enhancer II and Basal Core Promoter sequences, were analyzed. A phy…
Flexible multibody simulation approach in the analysis of tibial strain during walking.
2007
Strains within the bone tissue play a major role in bone (re)modeling. These small strains can be assessed using experimental strain gage measurements, which are challenging and invasive. Further, the strain measurements are, in practise, limited to certain regions of superficial bones only, such as the anterior surface of the tibia. In this study, tibial strains occurring during walking were estimated using a numerical approach based on flexible multibody dynamics. In the introduced approach, a lower body musculoskeletal model was developed by employing motion capture data obtained from walking at a constant velocity. The motion capture data were used in inverse dynamics simulation to teac…
Gemcitabine plus metronomic 5-fluorouracil or capecitabine as a second-/third-line chemotherapy in advanced adrenocortical carcinoma: a multicenter p…
2010
Adrenocortical carcinoma (ACC) is a rare neoplasm characterized by poor prognosis. First-line systemic treatments in advanced disease include mitotane, either alone or in combination with chemotherapy. Studies evaluating second-line therapy options have obtained disappointing results. This trial assessed the activity and toxicity of gemcitabine plus metronomic fluoropyrimidines in heavily pretreated advanced ACC patients. From 1998 to 2008, 28 patients with advanced ACC progressing after mitotane plus one or two systemic chemotherapy lines were enrolled. They received a combination of i.v. gemcitabine (800 mg/m2, on days 1 and 8, every 21 days) and i.v. 5-fluorouracil protracted infusion (2…
Physical and psychosocial prerequisites of functioning in relation to work ability and general subjective well-being among office workers
2002
Objectives The purpose of the study was to investigate the physical and psychological prerequisites of functioning, as well as the social environment at work and personal factors, in relation to work ability and general subjective well-being in a group of office workers. Methods The study was a descriptive cross-sectional investigation, using path analysis, of office workers. The subjects comprised 88 volunteers, 24 men and 64 women, from the same workplace [mean age 45.7 (SD 8.6) years]. The independent variables were measured using psychosocial and physical questionnaires and physical measurements. The first dependent variable, work ability, was measured by a work ability index. The secon…
