Immune-mediated necrotizing myopathy is characterized by a specific Th1-M1 polarized immune profile.

2012

Immune-mediated necrotizing myopathy (IMNM) is considered one of the idiopathic inflammatory myopathies, comprising dermatomyositis, polymyositis, and inclusion body myositis. The heterogeneous group of necrotizing myopathies shows a varying amount of necrotic muscle fibers, myophagocytosis, and a sparse inflammatory infiltrate. The underlying immune response in necrotizing myopathy has not yet been addressed in detail. Affected muscle tissue, obtained from 16 patients with IMNM, was analyzed compared with eight non-IMNM (nIMNM) tissues. Inflammatory cells were characterized by IHC, and immune mediators were assessed by quantitative real-time PCR. We demonstrate that immune- and non–immune-…

Morphological characteristics of microcirculation in oral lichen planus involving the lateral border of the tongue.

2009

Oral lichen planus (OLP) is a chronic mucosal condition commonly encountered in dental practice. Lichen planus is believed to represent an abnormal immune response in which epithelial cells are recognized as foreign, secondary to changes in the antigenicity of the cell surface. It has various oral manifestations. The aim of the study was to evaluate the morphological characteristics of microcirculation of lingual lichen planus (LLP). Twenty patients (10 patients with LLP and 10 healthy patients) were examined by means of videocapillaroscopy. The left margin of the lingual mucosa was examined in each patient. The capillary loop length, loop diameter, and capillary density were analyzed on ev…

Influence of Scapular Position on the Core Musculature Activation in the Prone Plank Exercise

2017

Cortell-Tormo, JM, García-Jaén, M, Chulvi-Medrano, I, Hernández-Sánchez, S, Lucas-Cuevas, ÁG, and Tortosa-Martínez, J. Influence of scapular position on the core musculature activation in the prone plank exercise. J Strength Cond Res 31(8): 2255-2262, 2017-Prone plank is a widely used exercise in core stability training. Research has shown that pelvic tilt plays an important role on the electromyographic (EMG) activation of core musculature. However, the influence of scapular position on EMG activation is currently unknown. Therefore, this study evaluated the influence of scapular position on the core muscles during a prone plank. Surface EMG of the rectus abdominis (RA), external oblique (…

PERIODONTAL MICROCIRCULATORY ABNORMALITIES IN PATIENTS WITH SYSTEMIC SCLEROSIS

2005

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to observe the differences in periodontal microcirculation between healthy patients and patients with systemic sclerosis (SSc). METHODS: Fifteen healthy patients and 15 patients with SSc were examined. Periodontal capillaroscopy was used to investigate the characteristics of microcirculation. The visibility, course, tortuosity, possible presence of microhemorrhages, average caliber of the capillary loops, and number of visible capillary loops per square millimeter were evaluated for each patient. RESULTS: The investigation was simple, non-invasive, and repeatable for each patient. In patients with SSc, it was possible to observe a reduced number of capi…

Periodontal Alteration of the Microcirculation and Hypercholesterolemia: A Possible Correlation?

2011

OBJECTIVE: We evaluated the morphological and parametric characteristics of the periodontal microcirculation in patients diagnosed as having hypercholesterolemia and high levels of low-density lipoprotein (LDL). METHODS: Forty patients were recruited, 20 of whom were affected by hypercholesterolemia and 20 of whom were considered healthy. A videocapillaroscopic examination was carried out on the periodontal mucosa in the proximity of the frenulum (II, V sextant). RESULTS: The difference between the parameters of the hypercholesterolemia group and the control group was evaluated with the Mann-Whitney U-test for non-parametric ordinal data; the level of significance being P < 0.05. The videoc…

Periodontal microcirculation in diabetics: An in vivo non-invasive analysis by means of videocapillaroscopy

2012

Summary Background Diabetes mellitus is today considered a society-wide disease of a chronic/degenerative nature. Among the secondary effects of diabetes, the one that interests the dental surgeon most is diabetic parodontopathy. The aim of this study was to underline and objectify microcirculatory variations at a periodontal mucous level in type 2 diabetics. Material/Methods The study enrolled 80 subjects: 40 subjects with a diagnosis of diabetes mellitus type II (18 males and 22 females, between 44 and 85 years of age); and 40 healthy subjects (17 males and 23 females, between 44 and 78 years of age). All the subjects, both diabetic and healthy, were submitted to a videocapillaroscopic ex…

Persistent antinociception through repeated self-injury in patients with borderline personality disorder.

2012

Abstract Patients with borderline personality disorder, mostly female, exhibit severe autoaggressive behavior, namely an intentionally performed, nonsuicidal self-injury and severe blunting of pain perception, the mechanism of which is hitherto not understood. Because the nociceptive system displays a high degree of plasticity, the aim of this study was to analyze the relationship of pain perception to self-injurious behavior. Pain perception of mechanical and chemical noxious stimuli was studied by quantitative sensory testing in 22 patients (15 female, 7 male) with borderline personality disorder (BPD) according to DSM-IV and 22 age- and gender-matched controls. BPD patients exhibited a s…

Five-year functional outcomes and vault of -20 diopter myopic phakic intraocular lens implantation.

2015

Purpose To evaluate refractive and visual outcomes and complications associated with phakic intraocular lens (pIOL) implantation to correct high myopia. Settings Fernandez-Vega Ophthalmological Institute, Oviedo, Spain. Design Retrospective observational case series. Methods Uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA) and corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA), refraction, vault, and adverse effects were evaluated after 5 years with Visian ICMV4 pIOL. Results Mean spherical equivalent (SE) dropped from −18.32 ± 2.37 diopters (D) preoperatively to −0.88 ± 0.52D 5 years postoperatively; 61% of eyes were within ±0.75 D of the target. The mean Snellen decimal CDVA and UDVA were 0.73 ± 0.23 and 0…

Potent bronchoprotective effect of deep inspiration and its absence in asthma

2000

In the absence of deep inspirations, healthy individuals develop bronchoconstriction with methacholine inhalation. One hypothesis is that deep inspiration results in bronchodilation. In this study, we tested an alternative hypothesis, that deep inspiration acts as a bronchoprotector. Single-dose methacholine bronchoprovocations were performed after 20 min of deep breath inhibition, in nine healthy subjects and in eight asthmatics, to establish the dose that reduces forced expiratory volume in 1 s by >15%. The provocation was repeated with two and five deep inspirations preceding methacholine. Additional studies were carried out to assess optimization and reproducibility of the protocol …

Acute effects of strength exercises and effects of regular strength training on cell free DNA concentrations in blood plasma.

2017

Creatine kinase (CK) is a marker for muscle cell damage with limited potential as marker for training load in strength training. Recent exercise studies identified cell free DNA (cfDNA) as a marker for aseptic inflammation and cell damage. Here we overserved in a pilot study the acute effects during strength exercise and chronic effects of regular strength training on cfDNA concentrations over a period of four weeks in three training groups applying conservation training (CT) at 60% of the 1 repetition maximum, high intensity-low repetition training (HT) at 90% of the 1 repetition maximum and differential training (DT) at 60% of the 1 repetition maximum. EDTA-plasma samples were collected b…
