Visual Representation of Urban Environment: Microraioni of Riga in Soviet Cinematography

Abstract The aim of this article is to interpret the discourse of residential areas of Riga through the films of the Soviet period and to examine essential changes in residential structure. Specific image of cinematic formal techniques is used in relation to the urban. The results of movie review are compared with changes in the residential development between 1945–1990. 124 movies display that residential areas are frequently portrayed in the Soviet cinema and they form an integral part of the Soviet urban perception.

Due to the widespread support for public parks and open spaces in urban areas, there is an increasing need to analyse the social benefits that are generated by such amenities. The city of Valencia (Spain) has a large park that can be considered its green backbone due to its transversal layout running along 9 of the 19 districts into which the city is divided. A contingent valuation survey was therefore conducted in order to obtain the non-market benefits derived from the use of this park by the inhabitants of Valencia. This work was developed at the “R-Lab” project, a workshop that was experimentally promoted by the University of Palermo (teachers, students and researchers) during the academic years 2010-11 and 2011-12. Workshop participants collected and elaborated analysis and proposals in an interdisciplinary and multi-level way (PhD, degree thesis, co-financed research) with lessons, seminars and applied research. Sono individuati alcuni degli obiettivi che la società contemporanea deve prefiggersi, poiché le è richiesto un cambiamento di visione della realtà territoriale e degli spazi di risulta interposti tra la città e la campagna propriamente dette: ridefinire le funzioni di tali spazi in un'ottica lontana da quella urbanocentrica, la quale attribuirebbe ruoli marginali e ancillari all'agricoltura.
