Kandyan forest gardens(KFG's) for sustainable development

2013

Master thesis in development management – University of Agder 2013 The Kandyan Forest Gardens (KFGs) Has been a basis for not only the stable agricultural livelihood of the community living in Tropical hills of Sri Lanka but also for the maintenance of biodiversity and equilibrium of the environment in these regions for an excitedly long period. Over the last several decades various social, economic and political changes have been brought about in these KFGG. The direct cause behind the above modifications was the forest conservation and management policies implemented in the area in question. These policies were put into effect with a view to keeping the peripheral community away from the …

2021

Small architectures can help to reinstate a daily use of the archaeological park, no longer considered as a specialised fence. The projects feed on iconographic memories that indicate where and how to look at. The comparison between the historical views and the current state shows some changes. Today the contemporary city surrounds the temples, arising among billboards, behind traffic lights. Unlike the postcards' logic where the ruins appear isolated, in the wake of a generic polemic against the recent transformations, the article aims to focus on a new aesthetic where contemporary architecture narrates a dialogue between different parts, offering new paths of approach to the ruins.

Dabas tēli Annijas Proulksas romānā “Kuģu ziņas”

2016

2017

Social servicescape effects on post-consumption behavior

2016

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to determine the role played by the social servicescape and positive emotions in the post-use in terms of response – satisfaction, perceived value and consumer loyalty – in hedonic services. Design/methodology/approach A quantitative study was conducted to gather data from 867 opera-goers through e-mail with a link to a questionnaire. Hypotheses were tested using structural equation modeling based on partial least squares. The effects of the social servicescape and emotions as moderators were examined using interaction techniques. Findings The paper provides empirical support on the multidimensional configuration of the social servicescape composed by b…

Agritourism and local development: A methodology for assessing the role of public contributions in the creation of competitive advantage

2018

Abstract Agriculture has been an economic mainstay of countries throughout history. Recently, its importance and essential role in local and regional growth and development have also received due acknowledgment. However, agritourism entrepreneurs often lack the necessary means, when relying only on their own funds alone. For these reasons, targeted aid measures are provided at the regional, national and European levels, provided they fulfill specified subjective and objective eligibility criteria. This investigation aims at understanding the rationale, if any, according to which the Public Administration allots such contributions. To this end, a two-tiered analysis was conducted on the data…

Re-build landscape. Design for the reuse of abandoned quarries

2021

Looking at the history of our geological and mining heritage, we can see the evolution of the role played by underground mining sites over the centuries. However, if the activity of quarrying stones is as old as the presence of humans on earth, the issue of the territorial regeneration, based on the recovery and re-functionalization of abandoned quarries, is one of the central arguments of the contemporary debate. The extractive activity that on one hand constitutes an important economic resource for numerous territories, on the other hand requires particular attention to the environmental impact it causes. The theme is that of the so-called drosscapes, soils and residual spaces, once margi…

Mapping and assessing ecosystem services in the EU:Lessons learned from the ESMERALDA approach of integration

2018

The European Union (EU) Horizon 2020 Coordination and Support Action ESMERALDA aimed at developing guidance and a flexible methodology for Mapping and Assessment of Ecosystems and their Services (MAES) to support the EU member states in the implementation of the EU Biodiversity Strategy's Target 2 Action 5. ESMERALDA's key tasks included network creation, stakeholder engagement, enhancing ecosystem services mapping and assessment methods across various spatial scales and value domains, work in case studies and support of EU member states in MAES implementation. Thus ESMERALDA aimed at integrating various project outcomes around four major strands: i) Networking, ii) Policy, iii) Research an…

Social causes and consequences of clients’ satisfaction with hotels

2015

ABSTRACT In order to make evidence the social dimension of satisfaction process, we propose a causal m…

Road verges provide alternative habitats for some, but not all, meadow plants

2021

Questions Agricultural intensification has led to the decline of biodiverse meadows and other semi-natural grasslands. Road verges offer potential alternative habitats for meadow species, but they may not be suitable for all meadow species due to different soil properties, frequent disturbances, pollution or suboptimal management. Are the communities of vascular plants and bryophytes similar or dissimilar to those in mown or grazed meadows? What kind of species are associated with road verges, mown meadows or grazed meadows? How do the habitat types differ in their soil conditions and disturbance intensity? Location The study was conducted on 36 sites in Central Finland. Methods We compared…
