INFLUENCE OF CITRATE NANOPARTICLES ON PHOTOCHEMICAL ACTIVITY, RESISTANCE TO PATHOGENS AND PRODUCTIVITY OF WHEAT

2021

In field experiments, increase the quantum efficiency of PSII (Fv/Fp), the Rfd-values (the chlorophyll fluorescence vitality indices) and the content of photosynthetic pigments in wheat leaves at pretreatment of wheat seeds with solutions of citrate nanoparticles has been shown. The green weight of plants at bacterial and phytoplasmas infecting at pretreatment with solutions of citrate nanoparticles, was increase, than without pre-treatment, in order: GeNPs>I-Se>SeNPs>VNPs as it has been shown. The Fv/Fp-values in leaves infected with phytoplasmas of plants at pretreatment of VNPs or I-Se solutions were more, than without pretreatment. The Fv/Fp-value in leafs with bacterial infecting at pr…

Attraversare l’inatteso selvatico urbano. Un’esperienza di cammino con Stalker a Roma est

2021

Italian cities have undergone in the past century a rapid development which has generated abandoned areas within its limits. Many of these places are now uncultivated and rich in spontaneous vegetation. The article reports the relationship between a wild area in eastern Rome, the ex-SNIA-Viscosa Lake, from which the artistic group Stalker has started some walking experiences. During the crossing of the wild spaces that characterize this part of the city, questions emerged related to the link between a community and unpredictable nature, the search for new approaches to conservation and the planning of natural spaces in the city.

Camminare e progettare territori marginali

2020

The paper aims to provide a report of the investigation and design activities which were carried out in the Apennine ridge of Umbria in collaboration with the Landscape Design department of the Vienna Polytechnic. The research found concrete realization in some landscape interventions and aspired to indicate different perspectives on landscape exploration practices in marginal and peripheral contexts. The contribution will focus both on the didactic experience of walking through the landscape and on the report of the project results. Walking is seen here as a perceptive and creative act, as a fluid practice that helps to recognize the characteristics of a territory and to enhance them throu…

Walkscapes. Un’esperienza professionalizzante a Palermo

2020

RIFIUTI E CITTA' STORICA. IL PAESAGGIO URBANO E L’IMPATTO DELLE SOLUZIONI TECNOLOGICHE

2019

Circular management of resource flows is an operational problem that appears with greater severity in an historical urban landscape due to the constraints generated by road fabrics and by the need to protect its values. It often happens that the degradation generated by the irresolute nature of the technical-environmental issues related to the service management, affects both the vulnerability of the historical city characters and the involvement of different actors. Here, we present the results of a research work that, through a case study, develops the experimentation of a methodology that identifies criteria for a waste collection system planning in an urban landscape of high historical …

Parasite-induced change in host behaviour and susceptibility to predation in an eye fluke–fish interaction

2004

Abstract Trophically transmitted parasites may increase their transmission efficiency by altering the behaviour of infected hosts to increase their susceptibility to predation by target hosts (the next host in the life cycle). The parasite Diplostomum spathaceum (Trematoda) reduces the vision of its fish intermediate hosts: its metacercariae lodge themselves in the eyes of fish and induce cataract formation, which gives them the opportunity to affect fish behaviour. We examined whether D. spathaceum eye flukes change the preference of fish for the surface layers of the water column or their escape behaviour, which could make the fish more vulnerable to predation by bird hosts. We also studi…

The significance of soils and soil science towards realization of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals

2016

Abstract. In this forum paper we discuss how soil scientists can help to reach the recently adopted UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in the most effective manner. Soil science, as a land-related discipline, has important links to several of the SDGs, which are demonstrated through the functions of soils and the ecosystem services that are linked to those functions (see graphical abstract in the Supplement). We explore and discuss how soil scientists can rise to the challenge both internally, in terms of our procedures and practices, and externally, in terms of our relations with colleague scientists in other disciplines, diverse groups of stakeholders and the policy arena. To meet th…

Effectiveness of cover crops to reduce loss of soil organic matter in a rainfed vineyard

2020

Cover crops (CCs) minimize the loss of soil in permanent cropping systems where the soil is usually bare due to intense tillage or overuse of herbicides. The topsoil, the richer layer in soil organic carbon and organic matter (OM), is affected by water erosion. Nature-based solutions appear as a suitable option for sustainable farming. In this study, the effectiveness of two years of CC management to reduce the OM loss is evaluated in a rainfed vineyard in a rolling landscape (Huesca, NE Spain). Two sediment traps collected runoff over 15 months. Topsoil OM contents (1.64% and 1.60%) and sediment/soil OM enrichment ratio (2.61 and 3.07) were similar. However, the average annual rate of OM l…

An erratic dropstone of granodiorite with a water-escape structure from a Weichselian terrace along the River Gauja (NE Latvia)

2016

Abstract A river terrace of the River Gauja (Latvia), built of Weichselian glaciolacustrine deposits, contains a large number of erratic boulders from the Fennoscandian Shield. These erratic boulders include several types of granites and granodiorites. Some of the granodiorites are so strongly weathered that they fall apart into mm-sized grains of individual minerals when it is attempted to take them out of the host sediment. This strongly weathered nature makes them physically comparable to unconsolidated sand. A consequence is that they may be subjected to soft-sediment deformation. The erratic granodiorite boulder under study here is the first described to show such a soft-sediment defor…

Long-term recovery of stream habitat structure and benthic invertebrate communities from in-stream restoration

2002

Headwater streams channelized for water transport of timber in Finland are being restored to their pre-channelization state. The primary motivation is the enhancement of sport fisheries, but restoration probably has profound impacts also on other stream organisms. We assessed how such ‘‘single-goal’’ restorations affect benthic macroinvertebrate communities. We revisited the streams sampled by Laasonen et al. [Aquatic Conservation: Marine and Freshwater Ecosystems 8 (1998)] in the early 1990s when the streams had been recently restored. In 1997, the recovery period of these streams ranged from 4 to 8 years. Habitat structure among the stream types represented a distinct recovery gradient, w…
