2017

Simplification of agricultural systems, farmland abandonment, uncontrolled urbanization, together with global scale drivers, determine fast and unpredictable phenomena of hydrogeological instability, biodiversity decline and identity loss. Men should hence promote socio-economic resilience and place identity, using biocultural landscapes as a resource. These landscapes are the outcome of the historical relationship between man and nature, resulting from complex interactions between biodiversity (at all levels, including species richness, ecosystem and biotope diversity) and cultural diversity, including material and immaterial aspects (architectural heritage, traditions, customs, local trad…

Renewed Sicilian Urban Landscapes. Transformation, Regeneration and Reuse of degraded areas

2020

In this study, through a multidisciplinary approach, some degraded Sicilian urban landscapes, today renewed thanks to urban regeneration interventions, will be ana-lyzed. Cities that look to the future and that react posi-tively to the current ecological and economic crisis. Urban centers that – through collective participation, the support of organizations, cultural associations and the sensitivity of local governments – are investing heavily in the theme of urban regeneration and re-cycling.

Renewed Sicilian Urban Landscapes.Transformation, Regeneration and Reuse of degraded areas

2020

The cities of the future must aim at improving the quality of living through processes of transformation and reuse of degraded, abandoned or underused urban areas. The cities of the future must generate renewed urban landscapes through recovery actions, creative reuse of abandonment, urban recycling, as new and powerful revitalizing forces in urban centers. The cities of the future must be more sustainable, more responsible but also more innovative capable of rethinking, reinventing, redesigning the forms of the settlement, mending relations with the environment and the landscape, reacting to scenarios "contaminated" by human hands and, from today, also from the covid-19 virus. The cities o…

2023

Diodorus’ information on Sicilian geography are few, and they occur in Books 4-5, devoted to local myths. The historian deals especially with subjects such as insularity, site, dimensions of the Island, with the aim to stress the central role played by Sicily within the ancient Mediterranean world, also from a geographical point of view. In Diodorus’ Sicilian “Archaeology” the coeval data about geography mingle with mythical information, often approximative and unreal, which the historian found in previous literary traditions. Yet mythical heroes left traces of their presence on the Island, and these are considered by Diodorus as still visible in his times, and a proof of their passage. Cen…

Reshaping civic space: some remarks on the transformations of the towns of Roman Sicily in the late Republic and early Empire

2018

Recent scholarship pointed out how the towns of Sicily experienced wide urbanistic and architectural transformations during the Hellenistic period. After the long debate on the chronology of the phenomena of material growth and dense urbanization shown by the archaeological record, that previously had been assigned exclusively to the Early Hellenistic period, it’s now generally accepted that several cities, especially in North-Western Sicily, reshaped their urban panoplia after the Roman conquest of the island, in the 2nd-1st centuries B.C., renovating extensively both civic and private buildings. Less known are the further transformations of the urban landscape between the late Republican …

Contatti culturali, identità e popolamento nel territorio imerese

2016

Settore L-ANT/09 - Topografia AnticaSettore L-ANT/07 - Archeologia ClassicaThis work focuses on the problem of cultural contacts between Greek colonists and indigenous communities in the territory of Himera based on the results of the archaeological survey conducted for three decades in the valleys of the northern Imera Torto and S. Leonardo rivers. The elements of material culture that enable us to define the ways of cultural interaction between settlers and indigenous peoples as well as to reconstruct the political socio-economic and sacred landscapes in the various districts investigated are examined. In fact the research allows to outline in addition to the usual settlement and agricultural organizations of chora politiké and éremos chora articulated areas within the territory of Himera and to understand the landmarks of the rural settlement alongside the presence of highland settlements . Therefore the center-periphery approach is abandoned for a more articulated analysis demonstrating different forms of settlement and cultural contact in the three river valleys of the Himera hinterland.

Review of S. Butler - S. Nooter, eds. Sound and the Ancient Senses (The Senses in Antiquity, vol. 6), London-New York: Routledge, 2019. An essential read for all those interested in the ‘soundscape’ of Antiquity – from rites to the human body, the physiology of hearing, myth, music on the stage, ancient emotions and contemporary attempts in reconstructing ancient sounds –, the volume offers a broad perspective on sounds and hearing in Antiquity by means of its fourteen essays, distributed into three parts (“Ancient soundscapes”, “Theories of sound”, “Philology and sound”).
