The avant-garde’s visual arts in the context of Santayana’s idea of vital liberty

Abstract In the present paper, the author looks at the political dimension of some trends in the visual arts within twentieth-century avant-garde groups (cubism, expressionism, fauvism, Dada, abstractionism, surrealism) through George Santayana’s idea of vital liberty. Santayana accused the avant-gardists of social and political escapism, and of becoming unintentionally involved in secondary issues. En estas páginas se analiza la medida abolicionista en el marco general de los problemas de la sedería valenciana. Global capitalism guided by desire- Solvang, CA, as a “real” place

Abstract How to deal with the transformation of place in the face of global capitalism is marked by many active debates. This paper dives into the transformation of the city of Solvang in California, from an agricultural village to a tourist destination. One way to analyse the process is to treat it as commodification, where values produced in places are being turned into exchangeable commodities.
