Demographic structure and the security of property rights: The role of development and democracy

Abstract It is often argued that countries with a high population share of children and young workers should attract large capital inflows from aging industrialized economies. However, many of these countries deter foreign investors by a high risk of creeping or outright expropriation. In this paper we explore whether the correlation between countries' demographic structure and the perceived security of property rights reflects a causal relationship. We show that, in low-income countries, the ratio of young to old workers has a positive effect on the perceived security of property rights if the political system is sufficiently democratic. We empirically investigate the entry mode choice in the service sector. In contrast to current models, we propose a model for choice of entry mode that breaks down the decision into two levels of analysis: first, at the more macro level, the choice of the degree of commitment is influenced mainly by country-related variables; second, at the more micro level, the choice of the degree of control is addressed by firm-related variables. The article analyses the evolution of the differences in economic conditions among Spanish regions from the perspective provided by the recent advances made in economic growth empirics. Although convergence is usually established in terms of Gross Value Added (GVA) per capita, in the case of Spain it is of special interest to break it down into three separate elements: activity rate, employment rate, and productivity of labour. The oxygen status of arterial human blood is described at least by four variables: Oxygen partial pressure (pO2, mmHg), oxygen saturation (sO2, %), hemoglobin content (cHb, g/dL) and oxygen content (cO2, mL/dL). Beside perfusion, however, the oxygen supply of all organs is decisively determined by the mean capillary pO2 which itself is primarily dependent on the arterial cO2. Butyl acrylate (BA)- and lauryl acrylate (LA)-based monolithic stationary phases for CEC were synthesized, using a redox system as initiator of polymerization. BA monoliths were initiated with ammonium peroxodisulfate, whereas LA columns were obtained with lauroyl peroxide as initiator. In both cases, TEMED was used to activate the process. The influence of porogenic solvent composition on both morphological and electrochromatographic properties of the resulting monoliths was investigated. Opioids are drugs used in medicine for pain control. In this paper, retention-pharmacokinetics and retention-pharmacodynamics relationships of opioids are proposed and statistically validated. These models are based on the compound retention in the biopartitioning micellar chromatography system (BMC), a new methodology which has successfully been used to develop QRAR models for many other families of compounds. In carbamazepine (CBZ) therapy the concomitant monitoring of concentrations of CBZ and its metabolites is strictly recommended, primarily to avoid toxic side effects. Currently, clinical routine monitoring of CBZ is accomplished by high-performance liquid chromatography or immunological methods.
