Correction: Oncogenic extracellular HSP70 disrupts the gap-junctional coupling between capillary cells

2021

High levels of circulating heat shock protein 70 (HSP70) are detected in many cancers. In order to explore the effects of extracellular HSP70 on human microvascular endothelial cells (HMEC), we initially used gap-FRAP technique. Extracellular human HSP70 (rhHSP70), but not rhHSP27, blocks the gap-junction intercellular communication (GJIC) between HMEC, disrupts the structural integrity of HMEC junction plaques, and decreases connexin43 (Cx43) expression, which correlates with the phosphorylation of Cx43 serine residues. Further exploration of these effects identified a rapid transactivation of the Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor in a Toll-Like Receptor 4-dependent manner, preceding its in…

Tourism development from disaster capitalism.

2021

This research note focuses on the impact of tourism development from disaster capitalism as expressed by post-disaster land grabs and forced population displacement. Case studies highlighted are India, Thailand and Sri Lanka following the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami; Honduras after Hurricane Mitch in 1998; and Barbuda following Hurricane Irma in 2017, demonstrating how disaster capitalism continues to be in play. The examples draw on disaster research to show how tourism development from disaster capitalism leads to more disasters. Long-standing disaster research can assist tourism researchers in identifying how to counter harmful post-disaster tourism development.

The Road to Higher Prices: Will Improved Road Standards Lead to Higher Housing Prices?

2020

AbstractWe study the impact of improved road standards on housing prices in a region of Southern Norway, where towns are located along the coast, like pearls on a string, with sparsely populated areas between the towns. In this region towns have since long been linked together by a road, but in 2009 a new highway, roughly parallel to the old road, was opened. The new highway runs Eastwards from the main town in the region and reduced one-way commutes to the main town by 10–15 min. We examine how this change in transportation infrastructure has affected housing prices, using difference-in-difference regressions to identify the impact of the new highway. Three smaller towns located East of th…

In vivo effects of intravascularly applied Escherichia coli hemolysin: dissociation between induction of granulocytopenia and lethality in monkeys.

1993

The effects of intravascular application of endotoxin-depleted Escherichia coli hemolysin (HlyA) was studied in rabbits and monkeys. In rabbits, bolus application of HlyA calculated to effect final blood levels of approximately 2-3 HU/ml (200-300 ng/ml) caused an acute fall of polymorphonuclear blood leukocytes to less than 20% of starting levels within 5 min. Additionally, platelet counts dropped to approximately 30% of starting levels, whereas lymphocyte counts varied considerably and seldom fell to less than 50%. Nine out ten animals that received 2-4 HU/ml toxin died within 90 min post application. These animals presented with signs of acute respiratory failure and post mortem inspectio…

Lauroyl peroxide as thermal initiator of lauryl methacrylate monolithic columns for CEC

2008

The preparation of lauryl methacrylate (LMA)-based monolithic columns for CEC using lauroyl peroxide (LPO) as thermal initiator of polymerization has been investigated. The influence of initiator amount and composition of porogenic solvent on the physical and electrochromatographic properties of the resulting LMA-based monoliths was evaluated. A comparison with LMA-based columns thermally polymerized with AIBN was performed. At a given porogenic solvent composition, LMA stationary phases initiated with LPO showed higher permeabilities and better efficiency values than those prepared using AIBN as initiator. The optimum polymerization mixture found for LPO initiator provided a minimum plate …

Evaluation of labial microvessels in Sjogren syndrome: A videocapillaroscopic study

2008

Summary Sjogren's syndrome (SS) is a chronic autoimmune rheumatic disease characterized by a progressive lymphocytic infiltration of exocrine glands, especially salivary and lachrymal ones, leading to xerostomia, parotid gland enlargement, and xerophtalmia. SS may occur alone (primary) or in association with almost any of the autoimmune rheumatic diseases (secondary), the most frequent being rheumatoid arthritis. The aim of this study is to describe the capillaroscopic pattern of the labial mucosa in patients with SS. Methods A total of 20 patients affected by SS and 20 healthy controls were examined. The patients with conditions that compromise microcirculation, such as diabetes, hypertens…

Nowa gospodarka ery informacji

2016

MULTICULTURAL CITY IN THE MEDITERRANEAN TERRITORIES: GREEN CITY PALERMO 2019

2014

This contribution aims to examine the territory of Mediterranean cities set against the general topic of the GREEN CITY. Our main research hypothesis will show how multiculturalism, the enhancement cultural heritage and a conscious use of natural resources, are essential factors for a positive change in the development of Mediterranean cities, involving actors, key figures, inhabitants and users. The preservation of multiculturalism comes under the enhancement of intangible cultural heritage of urban community. The enhancement of multiculturalism and of intangible heritage is, in fact, oriented to the preservation of the cultural and linguistic diversities of each ethnic group that takes pa…

¿Cabe hablar de una «generación de la crisis»? Discusión en torno a una noción sobreexplotada

2018

This article states that nowadays there is an overuse (or a misuse) of the «Generation» idea. The discussion among many authors over the «Generation of crisis» concept suggests that it is useful to outline the characteristics of the target of population of the collective of youth who are mainly affected by the economic and social crisis over the past years. Nevertheless, through analyzing the meanings of the «Generation of Crisis» made by Mannheim, Ortega and other classic authors, it is clear that the social class approach together with the generational one are needed to define this concrete concept. The conclusion of the articleis that both approaches are seen as underpinning their utilit…

Analytical Techniques for Furosemide Determination

2006

Abstract Due to the clinical importance of furosemide, a large number of analytical procedures to detect the presence of this drug in pharmaceutical and physiological samples has been developed. In this manuscript, a review of the most frequent analytical techniques described to determine furosemide is presented. Special attention has been paid to spectrophotometric and chromatographic techniques, but also to relevant methods using capillary electrophoresis or flow‐injection analysis, as well as the detection modes coupled to these techniques. The review also focuses on the different degradation pathways of the drug and cautions to prevent it, otherwise rarely or confusedly mentioned in the…
